This lecture describes how Mary Shelley’s novel both extends and critiques Enlightenment thought, focusing on texts addressed in Boğaziçi University’s core course, Humanities 102. The Creature’s account of his education is discussed in order to understand how he embodies problems of freedom and unfreedom.
Author: Margaret Russett, Professor of English, University of Southern California; Visiting Professor, Department of Western Languages and Literatures, Boğaziçi University

I truly belive that she is channeling Gene Wilder in the film, "Young Frankenstein." I am waiting for her to say one of his lines in the film.

The topic and the lecture remind me of this year's film, "Poor Things." which a story smilar to Frankenstein.. The shrill and panic of the lecturer reminds me of Emma Stone in the film. It's just the nature of my mind.

Nothing to do with Man trying to be God, or man ignorant of demons . read Paradise Lost by John Milton, if you truly want to understand this story!

Brilliant in content but phew; haven't come across a more jumpy or pedantic lecturer. No personality, no style. This, however, is a minor issue as the lecture is ultimately enlightening.

Wow! A lesson in how to take an overrated story and totally ruin any chance of enjoying it with all this political, class and racial bollocks.

Carey Hunt you can't separate race and class from literature. Only children can read a text for adults as if it was a children's book.

Contemporary re-telling has reduced it to a monster horror story. Yes, historical analysis does spoil this interpretation. The historical reality, though, is that inequality, the French Revolution, the abolition of slavery were the hot topics of the era. The daughter of one of the most influential political philosophers and the leading feminist philosopher of the time, and wife of Shelley - radical philosopher and poet, wouldn't have written a simplistic Horror Movie film script, she would have engaged with political and philosophical debate.
