This lecture describes how Mary Shelley’s novel both extends and critiques Enlightenment thought, focusing on texts addressed in Boğaziçi University’s core course, Humanities 102. The Creature’s account of his education is discussed in order to understand how he embodies problems of freedom and unfreedom.
