Like their batteries, Godox chargers can be a bit...unusual. So much so that using them wrong can prematurely wear out your batteries, or leave you with half-charged, or even dead batteries when you're ready to use them. Let's find out what's going on here, and what we can do about it.
My video about Godox batteries specifically: • 5 Godox Battery Rules ...
Feel free to use my links to buy chargers or batteries to help support this channel, and feed my fat cats:

While searching for chargers to add to my Amazon page, I discovered that there are more USB based chargers for Godox batteries other than the V1/AD100 Pro. While I haven't tested them yet, I suspect they're a bit better behaved than their AC powered counterparts. Now I just have to see how I can get my hands on some in Canada...

I don't understand why Godox haven't invested in better battery management and charging? It really isn't that difficult to engineer them that way. Great flashes let down by poor chargers. Again another great video from someone that understands battery electrics

It’s just one of the places they save a lot of money. But at the same time, if you buy a battery separate from a flash, they charge you an arm and a leg. Very odd.

I did change the way I charge and store my batteries since your first video on the subject. Now , after a session, a charge them up to 2/3 capacity and store. Before a shoot I top one of them to 100% and put it to use, mid-session I charge the spare to 100% and rotate it to use, etc. Thanks for the informed input.

I fell foul of leaving my Li-ion 580II spare batteries engaged in their chargers after they had been charged completely, but switched off at the mains. The one time in ages I wanted to use them additionally with the bigger flash units and I found out the batteries were flat. It obviously clicked with me that power was being fed back into the chargers. Needles to say I won't be making that mistake with those batteries/chargers or any of the other Godox units I have. Another great and informative video, thanks Wes.

I've always thought taking my batteries out of the charger when they're finished was the right thing to do, but I never really had any actual evidence that I had to do it, so thank you. I do leave some of my other (Sony) old battery chargers plugged in all the time though, and just put my batteries in and out of them when needed - if the vampire draw is potentially as large as you've found on some of these, I've got to make sure to unplug. Thanks!!!

I can’t say I’ve checked my Sony chargers, but I would trust them a little more...however I have no evidence to this effect, so I probably shouldn’t. Haha. I put all my chargers on two power bars so I can shut them all down when I’m done using them. (Batteries get removed as well, of course).

Ended up on this video trying to find out of the battery on my V1 not charging is a common issue. Like I bought it a year ago and just use it for product photography now and then so I've only gone through ten charge cycles. Not sure if the battery or the charger is the issue. Strangely after some experiments, it now charges when I plug into my computer, but wouldn't work with two different bricks.

Have you considered investigating the Adorama (exclusive) Flashpoint UC46 Multi Battery Charger for the XPLOR 600, 600Pro and 400 Pro? Have you ever seen the C26 charger display a single lit LED that runs up the four segment LED display? Normally, the charger should build up the LED sequence from whatever charge the battery has already, e.g., constantly show two LEDs lit and build the other two on top of them in cyclic manner. Sometimes, instead of showing all green LEDs constantly lit at the end of the charge, the charger shows a single green LED moving up the segments, i.e., it looks like a single light is moving up the segments. Whenever that happens, I disconnect the battery (it is an AD600 Pro battery), use it a bit (one full power discharge is enough) and then attach it again. The charger will then resume normal charging. I'm assuming the "single LED moving" sequence is indicating an error condition in which the battery is not accepting more charge but so far I have been unable to have this confirmed by anyone, nor do I know if there is a better "treatment" then what I described. P.S.: Batteries that have been charged up until the single LED moving sequence show as 100% charged on the AD600 PRO display and their own charging indication also indicates full charge. However, when reconnecting them to the C26 charger, the latter starts with only one or two segments constantly lit. It is a shame that none of these three charge indicators agree on any remaining capacity.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Жыл бұрын
That event indicates that the charger has been unable to evaluate the charge level of the battery. And yeah, usually just using the battery or charging it on a different charger, or waiting and reseating it, or even leaving it on the charger for a bit will resolve this issue.

By any chance, would you know the inner workings of the G6012L3 charger? Mine does not show the power light and does a sample hit at 15 volts or so and back off every second. does not display the red LED or the green bars at all. Curious if you've gotten component level into these. Great video btw. I had a lithium battery blow up a Nikon D80 on a shoot once in 2007. That really just depends on the internal discharge rate of the individual battery. Most lithium ion batteries are good for 2-3 months without use. But that's removed from the device and stored in a cool, dry environment. When still attached to the device, all bets are off.

Is it safe to leave the batteries in the flash-units themselves after they are charged 2/3 for storing ?

On the flashes with a hard switch, it’s reasonably safe, but it’s not recommended by the manufacturer. You’re supposed to take them out.

Hi Wes! I have a different issue with a Godox product, since you seem to understand pretty well how these batteries work I was hoping you could have some important insight on my battery as well. I have a Godox Tube LT60, actually 2 of them. They still pretty much brand new, one is charging normaly but the other one not. I can only use it while plugged directly from the charger. I left the tube light on charge for several hours, and the battery was still indicating drained. When I unplug and swith it on, it only shows the battery drain sign. However at one moment only, after all the charging and unplugging, I switched it on and the light came out just for seconds. Any idea what should I do to fix this charging issue? I can not return the unit since I bought it from an electronic auction house, with a no return policy.

Hmm that’s a shame. I’m having a similar issue with a big Pavotube. I took it apart and found it was a pinched wire due to the very thin form factor. But it’s hard to say what your problem might be. Could just be a bad battery, or a loose/pinched/bad connection. Unfortunate.

Thanks Wes for your reply, I really appreciate. I will try take my tube apart too and see what's might be the issue. If It's something I can fix, good. if not, I will just keep using it plugged as it does work that way. Thanks again

@erikbogardi2931 if the battery is very low it can take as long as 3-4 hours for the first charge level to be reached, as the charger will sometimes charge it very slowly.

Hi, have you ever tested whether the ad600 can be used while the battery is getting charged? Just like we do with a cell phone.

That’s a big nope Both because Godox says nope and it’ll build up too much heat and damage the battery nope.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Жыл бұрын
Early cell phones actually weren’t supposed to be charged and used as a phone at the same time (like even up until the iPhone 4 era it was in the fine print to not do that). Too much heat buildup. Modern phones will immediately limit charge speeds to manage heat buildup to prevent this.

Thanks for the reply. I have the ad600, 200 and a v860ii, none of the batteries get hot while charging or while in use. The v860ii has gotten hot a couple of times and missed fires but the battery didn't get hot. Anyway i trust your expertise more. 👍🏼

I have a question - and it's the behavior of my new XPLOR 400 pro light's battery. When received, I charged it fully before using it. Then, after using it for a fairly short amount of time, it indicated no bars and needed recharging. I recharged it 100% and only after about 10 full power flashes, it was already down to 2 bars. I decided to recharge it again to 100% and only then did it begin to behave normally/as expected. Do these batteries take some conditioning when new to hold a full charge?

Apparently they’re too expensive? Haha But seriously, the chargers need circuitry that monitors the charge levels and cell health of the batteries, and that does require a certain amount of current to be siphoned off. But it should only be done for a short measurement, not constantly.

Just make sure the battery is getting all the way into the charger, and also try different wall adapters and charging cables to rule that out.

Batteries should never backfeed into the charger. The lithium charger should just shut off. I don't yet know of any lithium battery that has a self discharge rate. I understand the self discharge rates of NiMH and Lead Acid but not lithium. I know the need to have a management chip to protect from over or under discharging and this could be the discharge you see. On their own there is no measurable self discharge. They don't work like Lead or NiMH. Maybe a diode could be inserted so there is not back feeding. Trickle charging lithium is dangerous. They will continue to accept a charge if you feed it one. It won't self terminate. Trickle charging is old tech for lead acid and maybe NiMH to keep them fully charged but no no no with lithium. A lithium battery has to be seriously overcharged but make no mistake, overcharging is dangerous even at micro amps.

@WesPerry
@WesPerry Жыл бұрын
Is the charger showing fully charged, or green? One issue I’ve had in the past is that some bad usb chargers don’t put out a full 5V, and the charger itself seems to base whether or not the battery is charged on a differential between the battery and the source voltage, so a poor usb supply will result in a not fully charged battery. Try a new usb source maybe?
