Really depends. I used a 250W light outdoors in addition to an 80W and was enough for the framing/situation/look. I get it though if you're needing to light up a large area.

Hey hey Sky! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The 600 definitely helps with outdoors, though I'm going to guess that a 1200d is going to be the for sure best option for people really fighting the sun. Had I put any diffusion in front of the 600, it probably wouldn't have been able to give me enough fill on the face. But as Division of Labor said, you can make lower power lights work depending on your outdoor situation. At the end of the day, we all much get the right tool for our specific situations and thank goodness we have so many options now that don't cost an Arri $40k! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey again Michael! I agree that they are most likely coming, hopefully all part of this new "knowled" family of lights as I really like the build and having it feel much closer to the Aputure LS family of lights with a case, robust cables, and ballast.

Thanks for another great video. IMO, If you have other Aputure lights, you should stay with them simply for the Sidus link app. If this Godox was Weather resistant at this price point then that would be more of a consideration.

Hey hey again Steve! Agreed. Someone told me there was this wired mesh that people use to repel rain from their lights. Wouldn't be as good as Aputure's true weather proofing, but could be an alternative. I need to get my hands on some of that wire mesh and see what happens when I run water onto it in various strengths.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Not only that but Hog cloth as they call it is fairly expensive too. So you're hardly saving anything. Though I wish I had either option on my last shoot. We had to cover the 300D with an umbrella. It worked fine. Thankfully we had a crew that was quick thinking! I hadn't planned for a heavy rainstorm in the middle of LA that day. Haha. BTW, Adorama and B&H have this light for $999. I still might have to pick one up.

Hi, I like how you reviewed this and mentioned the considerations. How does this compare though with the DMX feature. I am just starting out with video and light but when someone is at that point of using lights for movies, DMX for changing light mid-scene might be a thing.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Жыл бұрын
Hey hey Jan! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! DMX is definitely a great tool for those types of moments where you need to control lighting for specific scenes. Though I'm not sure what you asking when you say "How does this compare" If you mean how does the DMX compare against the Aputure's DMX. They should work exactly the same as the DMX's job is just to take cues from a light board and adjust its brightness based on the light boards faders. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Hi, thanks for taking the time to answer. For example some lights increase the light in steps when you adjust percentage, does that also happen when using DMX (a staircase does not look as good as a smooth transition). Or can you use every function when using DMX, How many bits are available when adjusting the output of the light. Basically how is the DMX feature implemented.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I do not have access to a DMX board to truly test these features out on different LED lights (more on that later). My understanding is that not any ol DMX board will work with LED lights rather you will need to have a DMX board that specifically can work with LED type of lights for exactly the reason you stated "stepping" through the dimming process. That all being said I am curious about the DMX protocols for lights that dim by 1% vs these newer lights that dim by .1%. I do not know if the DMX protocol on the 1% lights will be able to hit all those inbetweens to smooth it out even more. However with the 1% LED's if you slowly went through each percent, you wouldn't see the stepping. You only really start to see the stepping if you try to twist the dim knob super quick and it jumps a 5% gap or something. I wish I could give you more info on this feature, but I guess filmmakers at my Indie level don't really find a situation to run a DMX board on site. I'd say since you are just starting out with video, I wouldn't worry too much about the DMX feature in your investment rather you will want to start learning and experimenting with lighting in general as well as solidifying your camera, lenses, and microphone knowledge.

Issue with Godox is with the UL series you need two different apps depending on the light, where as aputure lights all work with the same app no matter the age. Points to the possibility of unsupported kit not to far down the line, and their customer support is atrocious.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Candy Arts! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Yea, the switch they made between the old photo app to the much more functional new one was a bit untimely. I've spoken to them about this and for the most part, reviewing all their new gear, they seem to slowly just keep introducing new products that uses the new app. Though in theory I feel they technically can (and should) try to link the older models together in the new app since they are all using the 2.4ghz frequency (though different protocols). I don't believe that there will be some new app down the line that makes the current one and lights obsolete. Godox was primarily more of a photography company that happened into the filmmaking market when people started buying the SL60w, so they kept using the older photography wireless stuff because they already had it. Now that we have the new app, they are most likely continuing to build on it and not shift to a new app system as theres no real need to switch. I'm sorry to hear about the customer service part, I have yet to experience it myself just yet. Hopefully they figure that out and make the progress smoother for people with warrenty. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Exactly! Though it doesn't seem like Godox wants to provide any solution to the problem, and why I'd be wary of buying anymore of their products. Apurture appears to be the safer bet in regards to support. As I said it's not like the UL150 isn't a relatively new light.

Hey hey again XonX! Typo in the UI aside as I feel it can happen to any product from Hollywood movies, major magazines etc. I personally feel Godox's track record is good enough and up there with the main budget brands (Non-Hollywood Brands). All of the godox lights I have reviewed in the past few years are all still performing well with no problems.

Hi Jason! i've been looking for a 600watt COB to use as a key light on interview scenarios, in a booklight configuration. I only have Godox fixtures, but i wouldn't mind owning an Aputure light. My question is in regards to the response of this fixture when paired with the Godox Light app. Can you control the intensity with the slider with no visible steps? I'm asking mainly because i would like to dim the light seamlessly in camera. I assume that the Aputure LS 600d can achieve this with Sidus Link, but i'm curious about the Godox system.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Nicolás! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Yes you can sort of achieve this idea of dimming down during a shoot. However you have to be careful with how fast you pull the slider, if you pull it too fast you can see the stepping down of the light. Most of these bluetooth apps will have this problem because of the communication lag between the light and the app. For the smoothest dimming while doing a live shoot is to use a DMX light board with faders. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Gianne! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Unfortunately not anytime soon it seems, I've asked DJI for a review unit to no avail. From the reviews I have seen between the two, the DJI is a good option as well and seems to handle sudden loud outputs a little bit better (initially), but this is nothing that RODE can't tweak in their firmware updates. RODE also seemed to tease that there will be a additional settings feature in the future where you could adjust compressions levels and such? I don't think thats come out just yet, but its something RODE can definitely do with their software and smartphone app. Not entirely sure if DJI is thinking about doing that at the moment. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

hi! i heard that the ballast clamp for the knowled series have more wiggle and feels less stable than the aputure's. Is this true?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Darren! The clamp itself to the light stand pole is solid, the v-mount portion of the clamp does have some "roll" wiggle, but I've personally never felt it would fall out as it's locked in there. This could just be the V-mount adaptor piece that they sourced as the super clamp is like my other super clamps I have. Wish I had another v-mount super clamp to see if its just the V-mount portion or if the v-mount lock on the back of the ballast is a tad small.

@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Жыл бұрын
Hey hey Michael! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! There is a couple factors at play here as I put the light in the worst situation possible with the garage test. Because I am exposing for the outdoor background while using such a high power LED at 100% the shadows are going to look very harsh on my face and the garage is going to look essentially dark because of the light fall off. I also I didn't light myself straight on as I feel most people wouldn't light that way, they would go for the high angle light instead. If I put a bounce on the other side it would even out the shadows on my face in the garage setup. I didn't do this so that people can see the raw power. These are the factors to consider when looking at the worst case scenario test to see what the light is capable of. Most people probably won't force themselves to shoot in this situation with that specific framing. Hope this helps give you an idea of how powerful a 600w class LED could be for your filming situations! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Castiel! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! It definitely depends on the needs of a filmmaker when it comes to these high powered COB LEDs. Most filmmakers will be more than well serviced with a 150w class COB LED. The 600 will be for much larger setups where the lights are further away lighting up an entire area like a small parking lot set. Thanks again for stopping by!
