It’s cool that you thought of Godsmack/Shannon Larkin after they did the Neil Peart video because I got to hang out with Shannon quite a bit a few years back when he was recording the 1000 hp album and at one point he mentioned how Neil Peart was a huge influence on his style! Great suggestion!

Good recommendation. I toured with Smack from 99' and the last tour I did was 1000hp in 14' I think. I was their original Pyro shooter and designed many tours as well. I didn't do this one, but I have to say growing up playing drums, the smack boys were one of my favorite bands to work for. The band changed a lot when they got rid of Tommy and added Shannon. you should watch the battle from the Wake the F$%! up tour. crazy to see how far it came.

It’s Led Zepplin’s Moby Dick. They do this nightly on tour. It’s one of the main reasons that other bands that godsmack have opened for start to talk smack about them.. because they steal the show! Sully is a phenomenal front man and the drum battle kills it! Sully has a crazy work ethic and although godsmack was not the first rock band to do this, it was sully who decided to start it up along with the pyro and lights. He said the showmanship had been missing thru the 90s with all the “grunge” band where people paid hard earned $$ to go watch guys on a stage play instruments.. no great light show, pyros, etc. he wants to make sure people get their $$s worth

George Ryan great reaction!!! *Sully* is the one playing the bongos in the first movement! I do believe they incorporate this drum duel in every show. I was lucky enough to see them in the late nineties they would do a percussion drum off at that time it wasn't as elaborate as this was 😁! By the song motif at the end were these songs in order *Rush YYZ, Areosmith/Run-Dmc Walk This Way, Led Zeppelin Moby Dick, Rush Tom Sawyer and Metallica Call of Ktulu* for the crescendo.

The story, overly simplified, is that Sully is the singer of Godsmack, and he used to be a drummer back in the day, and then some shit went sour with his former band, who actually HAD a record deal, and he was like, "screw this, I'm going to do my own thing where I'M the singer." And everyone basically laughed at him and were like, "dude you can't sing for shit!" And he set out to prove them wrong basically, and the rest, as they say, is history. Edit: Also I'm Big Impressed that George picked up on the Korn thing. It also sounds kinda similar to the song off their most recent album When Legends Rise too. Check it out! In my opinion, it's the best album Godsmack has ever done, and they've been around for 20+ years.

We were aware of the Alice In Chains song but didn't really think much about it." Cited on Wiki and here. web.archive.org/web/20071011092214/nyrock.com/interviews/1999/godsmack_int.asp

Sepultura used to have HUGE drum offs in the middle of their gigs. They’d get whichever bands were supporting them or they were supporting to take part. So for example I saw them play at the London Astoria with all the guys from Slayer and System Of A Down on stage, everyone with drums , everyone shredding with Igor Cavalera on the main kit behind them just going off. Good times.

When I saw Tool in 2002 with Meshuggah, they would get Tomas Haake out there on floor drums for "Third Eye" -- it was pretty cool! And I'm not even a die hard Tool fan, haha. I went for Meshuggah ;)

Their album “Faceless” is probably going to be your best starting point for just getting into Godsmack. “Straight Out Of Line” is playlist. Their first album is great but has a raw sound. They have songs that show off their ability, and then they make some songs that just bang.

I’ve run into Sully Erna a handful of times. Even played poker with him a couple times cuz he lived near Boston for a long time. He actually cashed the World Series of Poker Main Event 3 years in a row which is crazy hard to do. He’s a SUPER NICE guy. Just a joy to talk to. Godsmack rules.

Hey guys , I have to say how much I enjoy watching you guys enjoy the music. Your reactions are priceless. I'm a old metalhead at 56 YO been listening to metal since 1970 via my older brother and sisters would blast bands like Sabbath, Purple , Steppenwolf and Led Zeppelin. So by the time bands like Godsmack came around the newer bands such as them didn't do much for me , However Godsmack was the one few bright spot of bands that debuted in the mid to late 90s that I really really like. I have all their stuff and seen a version of this live and it kicked ass . Keep on doing what you do and having the absolute joy that the music brings you.

I stood on the stage while Shannon was setting his drums up at a club called the Rabbits Foot in Frederick, MD. He was playing with his band Wrathchild America. I was hanging with my friends that had a band called Miriah, this was late eighties early nineties. Anyway, I just felt that Larkin was something special, phenomenal drummer!
