My daughter and I got to hang out with Sully in Reno, NV, for a few hours leading up to their show about 10 years ago. He and his daughter were at a place inside the Grand Seirra Resort called Fun Quest, and both our daughters had a blast playing together! I'm telling you, he's the most down to earth dude you could possibly meet. We talked drums, guitar amps, life on the road, new ideas for the next album, on and on. Even shared some pizza and sodas from the Round Table pizza next door. Then we got to see him rock out with Godsmack a couple hours later, it was an epic show!

I saw Godsmack open for Metallica as well and the drum solo was insane. Shannon is tall and has long arms so he absolutely crushes the kit. Sully was originally a drummer who worships at the altar of Neil Peart. Hence the YYZ and Tom Sawyer snippets. They are also Boston guys so that’s why the Aerosmith got dropped in. All in all, this was a great solo not just because the drumming is insane, but I loved how the band was incorporated throughout.

What many don't recognize is the fact, this whole sequence was inspired by the band's love of Metallica, and the drum battle between James and Lars from the 1990's San Diego concert from Live Shit: Binge and Purge. Not as a ripoff or some shit like that, but as a love letter tribute. Hence, the incorporation of a few Metallica riffs there at the end of the sequence, along with Walk This Way, and a few other nods. Unless the video was taken down by KZfaq due to copyright (likely), you might still find a behind the scenes video out there with Sully and Larkin building and practicing the sequence, and the band jamming on a few different song ideas to slip in at various points. Nearly every time they performed this live, they would change up which riffs they would use night to night. Dammit I love these dudes. It is really goona be heartbreaking to see the close of this band in the next couple years. Sure hope I finally get the chance to see them live before the end.

I took my now-wife to a Godsmack concert on our first date. I’d seen them before but it was her first time. I’ll never forget before the show, during sound check, she turns to me and goes “why do I hear them testing out a drum kit? There’s no one sitting at the drums!” “Oh just you wait…” her mind was blown when they performed this! It made me so happy watching your reaction to take me back to that feeling of seeing someone experience this for the first time Our daughter is taking a liking to percussion and I can’t wait until she’s old enough for concerts, I hope Godsmack is still touring by then to see her reaction to this battle. Also… my Christmas wish is to see a singer/drummer duo battle of Godsmack vs Foo Fighters… how cool would that be?

Massachusetts native here 👋🏻! Die hard fan since they released their first single in ‘98. They are from Lawrence, Ma which is just north of Boston. Sully is Italian descent. He’s played the drums since he was 3 years old. They almost always do “Walk this way” in their drum battle as an ode to Aerosmith (also from Boston), then they throw in another this time was Led Zeppelin, when I saw them this past summer in Boston they did Metallica… my husband saw them when they toured with Metallica back in ‘08 and I believe Sully did a drum battle with Lars Ulrich. They’ve recorded a great cover of “Nothing Else Matters” and also “Good Times, Bad Times” (and I personally love their cover of “Come Together”. Godsmack is amazing! Shannon Larkin is a beast on drums! My son wanted an electric guitar so bad, so I bought him one… then he saw them with me this past summer and was amazed with Shannon and is now all about the drums. Godsmack is simply amazing and so full of talent. They care about their fans as well. They have also founded The Scars Foundation for mental health awareness and resources to find help. 💜 And Sully did a podcast on KZfaq during the Covid lockdown in 2020, it’s called Hometown Sessions if your interested on learning about him on a more personal level.

It's probably already been said but the dude playing bongos and whatnot is Sully, he's the vocalist for the band and also plays guitar and writes a lot of their songs. He grew up drumming tho, played drums for a number of bands before he started Godsmack. Shannon Larkin is their drummer and he's been around for a while. I saw Godsmack three days after 9/11, it was the first concert played anywhere after the attacks. It's a lifelong memory for me. You could feel fear, anger, sorrow, and crazy energy in the crowd all night. Absolute loudest crowd I've ever been a part of. Nobody sat down, nobody stopped screaming and singing along all night. I remember Sully saying something like "We're scared too, man, but this is all we know how to do so if we can come out here and take our minds off it for a little bit then that's what we're gonna do." They did the drum battle back then as well, different drummer at the time but still really cool to see. And yeah, loud AF. I'll never forget it.

Imagine going to this concert.. with a drummer friend, and they bust this out on you outta nowhere. I've seen them and hung out with them. They are some of genuinely nicest and coolest people I've met. This was by far one of the most epic things I've ever seen live. Godsmack is an experience like no other. A must see.

Personally I have always loathed dual drum solos for many reasons. This is not only well worked out and includes the band instead of just being about showing off but this also shows a great amount of thought into what will work in a live setting. There syncing is unbelievable. Not many examples of this type of 'drum battle'

You asked about the singer’s nationality…his full name is Salvatore “Sully” Erna, and he’s of Italian descent. Lawrence, Massachusetts is a rougher neighborhood of Boston, which has a lot of Italian residents dating back to the days of Christopher Columbus. When the band was first formed, he was the drummer, hence his chops. He became the singer when the original one left. He became singer, and Shannon Larkin’s predecessor, Tommy Stewart, became the drummer in 1998. Shortly after, the band exploded with the creation of their 1st album. Hope that helps being some perspective on Godsmack. They’re a fantastic band to see play live, so if you get a chance, please take advantage!

I leaned to my friend and asked him to tell sully I was acing a great time but couldn’t stand up. So we leaned forward and put our hands up to mimic standing and the show continued lol. I know I'm late to the video but Sully why he's so good with the drums is because he was a drummer in a band in the late 80s early 90s and he was the one who played drums on their first studio album. And then they got another person to do the tour but he's an all-around musician he can do the guitar sing a lot of things people can't do if you go back and listen to their first studio album that's Sully on the drums. I know this was years ago but still the band keeps on bringing out music so that's a good thing I actually got to see that tour or they did the two moving stages very good Showmanship by that band I will never say anything bad about Godsmack ever good music and all around very nice people also. That's just my two cents into it I hope everybody has a wonderful day I know I'm late to the video so I hope everybody has a wonderful day stay safe and be kind to all you are a fellow men and women.💯🤘🤙

Sully Erna was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He began playing drums at the age of three. His father, Salvatore Erna Sr., was a trumpet player from Sicily and would rehearse in the basement where Sully would watch. His great-uncle was a famous composer in Sicily. At the age of 11, Erna discovered that it was easier for him to listen to something and play it than read sheet music. He stopped taking lessons and practiced at home, rehearsing to records by Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, and Rush.
