To think Burr wrote this speech himself. It really shows how much he cared for the role and for Godzilla.

Originally the us studio wanted an out and out comedy. Raymond Burr said he would not appear if they didn’t do Godzilla properly. Pretty sure it’s him alone that gave this send off its majesty.

You can see that's kinda where the American scenes with the military were heading. Once Mr. Martin appeared at their base, the grim tone of the original returned and the situation (In the film) was no longer funny. Burr always had a lot of love and respect for Godzilla, he alluded to trying to gain the rights to Godzilla at one point but that obviously never happened. For a guy who never so much saw the costume in real life, he made Godzilla feel real...twice

I am so thankful that Raymond Burr took Godzilla 1985 seriously. He clearly understood what the metaphor of Gojira stands for. That first movie was dead effn serious, and is a genuine work of art. This movie was a product of its time, however the message has always been the same. I really enjoy both versions of Godzilla 1984/85. This was also the first G movie I had ever seen. Been hooked ever since.

Really the only thing that brings this scene down for me is because to see these scenes I also have to watch how the American cut of this film makes the USSR into a bunch of crazed bad guys which ruins the theme of this movie being about the Cold War and Godzilla throwing a monkey wrench in the world tensions between the major powers with Japan unfortunately caught in the middle as both sides reluctantly work with eachother to try and solve the crisis only for things to go wrong.

"Nature has a way sometimes of reminding man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up the terrible offspring of our pride and carelessness to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences. For now, Godzilla, that strangely innocent and tragic monster, has gone to earth. Whether he returns or not or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us remain"

At the start when the Japanese guy stares off silently, you can tell that he's deeply troubled and is likely thinking something like "God forgive us for our many sins and for what we had to do to one of your creations......".

Here's a quick breakdown on the character for anyone who hasn't seen the original Japanese "Return Of Godzilla" aka "Godzilla 84" aka "Godzilla 1985". The "Japanese guy" is a man who survived the original 54 attack on Tokyo as a child. Originally he hated Godzilla and became a scientist in the hopes of finding a way to kill it. The more he studied Godzilla the more he came to respect it and no longer thinks it deserves to die... So that's pretty much exactly what the actor was meant to convey.

They should have also added the Japanese footage of their government watching his death since their tears would have well matched Raymond Burr's speech along with the one military man(American Version)who bows his head while the speech is going on. His bowing his head indicates to me that he too finds Godzilla's death unfortunate and sad.

While a powerful speech indeed, however Godzilla did not die here. It was a trap merely to send him plummeting into the volcano to imprison him to which he would only be stuck in there for several years before being released in Godzilla vs. Biollante.

Yeah, but Toho didn't plan on it at the time, this was more like a testing the waters phase to see if reverting him back to 1954 era works (and it did), and though the lava wouldn't kill him immediately, sooner or later that charcoal skin will give way, burning him alive (obviously, it would take eons before that happens), he probably mutated to change appearances (thus making up for not having 84Goji in Biollante)

The sad part about this is the fact that humanity won't take quotes like this seriously because, they fail, to see how puny and greedy they really are, to both themselves and others, and more importantly the earth itself, when people will watch this video other than godzilla fans, they will fail to realize that humans are actually this corrupt, and literally after watching this video, or any other video pointing out the same thing, after two minutes people will ignore this and go back to their Daylee lives. But I cant blame them because in the state we are at, humanity just cannot solve the worlds problems, I loved this video, it didnt make me cry but that speech still hit me real hard, and as always long live the king

I agree with others when they said as kids they cried during the ending. It really is sad as you hear that high pitched roar as Godzilla falls into the volcano. I like how although everyone is happy they were able to stop Godzilla that part of them is saddened that this innocent creature was created of man's folly and need for power. This one and the original are two of my all time favorite Godzilla movies.

@@zachweiss6183 There's only one actor that can play the role of Steve Martin in a Godzilla movie and that is Raymond Burr. Replaying his role once more in Godzilla 1985, and his speech he gave at the end had a deeper meaning. "We humans think or believe we are in full control of nature of any kind. Yet nature herself has a way of reminding us she's in control. Greedy people do not understand until it's too late. We must care for the earth as we were made to be Stewards of the earth, to care for all wildlife and plants alike. We do not what we have until we destroy it. There is nothing worse then a man greediness for power, and for money, but mostly power. And worse destroying each other with wars, invading each other's country, and the environment. We must do to care for the earth as God the Father intended for us to do. Or there will be nothing left on this planet we call home". In a way Raymond Burr was pretty much spot on in this speech he written at the end.

i got to say i have been a godzilla fan for 24 of my 28 years of life. i have seen every single movie made more then once. i have great respect and reverence for the Monster franchise that has lasted almost 70 years and counting, the allegorical meaning of the franchise. i have wept in sadness during moments like this or the end of Godzilla v Destroroyah, i have laughed at the silliness of the 1960's and 70's movies, and overjoyed and the numerous bad ass moments of the franchise. In short i am a super fan like so many of us, but i could never right such a tribute like this almost like a eulogy in a way. i think for any godzilla fans few lines of Dialogue have such a profound meaning like this single minute at the end of a movie that move you in such a profound way

Godzilla is for essential purposes an animal with the exception of a few Showa appearences where they give him self consciousness or at least imply he has it. Animals are inherently innocent. Unlike humans animals don't kill out of malice or hate but out of necessity and self preservation. It just so happenes that in addition to being an animal Godzilla is also one of the most powerful and potentially destructive forces on the planet. Holding Godzilla responsible for the destruction he causes is like holding a bee responsible for stinging someone they're bees it's what they do.

I'm guessing you already know this but this doesn't kill Heisei Godzilla. He's trapped until Godzilla VS Biollante when he gets released by terrorists/criminals attempting to ransom the Diet. They blow up the rim and he is released.

No it's 1985. The Japanese version Godzillas Revenge was released in 1984. The American release with Raymond Burr was in 1985 and was called Godzilla 1985. Being that this scene is from the American version as it has a narration by Raymond Burr as Steve Martin which is not in the Japanese version this is Godzilla 1985 and not 1984.
