Gene Siskel even asked the question, "If you're going to go through the trouble of putting us in a monster movie, why don't you at least take advantage of having the monster either eat or squash us?" in his review of the movie. I just wanted to recall it because of what Gene said to Roger Ebert via telephone.

***** And Superman is a rip-off of a flying man in tights. Is that what you want to say? Listen, if you count that as a rip-off then everything is a rip-off. Then for example Jurassic Park is a rip-off of Monster island and The Terminator is a rip-off of Mecha-Godzilla. Besides this Superman lizard looks like any other dragon type monster of that time. the only reference to Godzilla is the size, but still I know where you are coming from.

icecream is nice It's not and will never be a "piece of s**t" to me. I love this film, and I truly have legitimate, genuine reasons why. I'm sorry, and I know I shouldn't be bothered by this, but it seriously IRKS me whenever G-Fans call this film a 'piece of s**t.' I find it very derogatory. And it's been 18 years since it came out, so when I see G-Fans describing the film like this, it comes across to me as very SAD because it's like the Godzilla fan base as a whole STILL hasn't gotten over its collective disappointment over this film, EVEN in the wake of Gareth Edward's film. 😔

I think this was one of the last reviews Gene Siskel did before he died. My problem with this movie was the fact they made Godzilla an animal, not a monster. He spends most of the movie hiding or running way, and only fights to defend himself.

I've never been on the hate bandwagon for this one. Maybe because I was twelve when it came out and had only seen a handful of Godzilla flicks by that point (and I have a greater fondness for the British flick Gorgo), but I remember being entertained and if there is nothing better to do, I'll watch it if it's on TV on a random Saturday afternoon. Faint praise maybe, but I can name a lot of films that bring out greater vitriol from me.

As far as Spielberg goes, imagine if he directed this. Seriously, the master of the summer blockbuster...although perhaps he thought it would have been too similar to Jurassic Park. There were once talks for Spielberg to adapt the novel "Robopocalypse" (which I started reading for that reason, fantastic book), we hope that something like that can show audiences how summer blockbusters used to be.

I always loved this one ever since I was a kid and I watch it often. I love its dark mood and David Arnold's score. It has a great cast (Jean Reno is amazing in everything and I thought Matthew Broderick was quite believable as a scientist). I can see why fans of the original Godzilla didn't like it as it is not a Godzilla movie but a very enjoyable monster flick with great production values. Maybe the reason I love this film so much is because I really don't care about the original Godzilla (I found the 2014 movie much less enjoyable). Great review Mr. Harper, it's great to have a reviewer that's not only about destroying a movie for laughs. You are very professionnal !

I still suspect that this movie did not actually start as a Godzilla movie. Watch it and the older classic "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" back to back and the similarities between the two become apparent. I can't help but suspect that this started life as a Beast remake and someone scratched out the title and scribbled in Godzilla when the license became available. And as a Beast 20k remake it isn't THAT bad...

The look of this Godzilla is great. Not having lumbering around at a snail's pace was a great idea. It's a feature the original Godzilla creators wanted but couldn't achieve. They originally were going to make him thinner and faster for their stop-motion plans but the production was too costly back then. So they went for the much cheaper costume and miniature live action style. They wanted a leaner and faster Godzilla and that's one reason Toho signed off on his new design for this film. Plus they wanted to keep the American style seprate from their's. This movie had a LOT of potential but belly flopped in large part to the terrible script, cast, and acting.
@firetools

@Drforrester31
@Drforrester31 9 жыл бұрын
I've never, ever heard that they wanted Godzilla to be fast. You are correct about the stop-motion, but I think you're adding your own ideas about the designs. Original storyboards all show him standing upright, and with less of a gut because obviously they didn't know what a man in a giant dinosaur suit would look like. And a creature the size of Godzilla moving quickly while standing upright wouldn't have worked, even in fiction.
@sespider
@sespider 9 жыл бұрын
Dr. Forrester They said it. Just not exactly how fast they originally wanted him to say. As for the storyboards, standing upright has nothing to do with him being slow. Standing upright could be fast or slow. They had to change his look once they realized they couldn't go the King Kong route. "but I think you're adding your own ideas about the designs." No I'm not. That would require lying. Something I'm 100% against.
@firetools
@firetools 9 жыл бұрын
SEspider Can you prove that Toho specifically said that? Any source, quotes, etc? Granted, Toho's original vision for Godzilla was probably that of a thinner, more streamlined creature, but as far as this movie goes the input for Zilla/GINO's design was mostly between Emmerich and the monster's designer Totopolous(the main character was named after this guy). While this monster had a decent design, it doesn't help to deviate so far from what's already established, even if it was the original vision(I think a good anology to this was how George Lucas originally envisioned the old Star Wars movies) Eh, not a big fan of this argument anyway. The debate over the creation of Zilla/GINO has always been a he said she said. "Emmerich decided to drastically change Godzilla behind Toho's back BUT WAIT Toho was supportive of the idea all along, this design was their original view of Godzilla!"

Great review. Even after a couple of years your review is still interesting like almost all of them. I guess, you can´t find someone loving all of the movies. :) Me, I had been very sceptical about the Godzilla movie not being a fan of this kind of monster flick. Even Jurassic Park isn´t my kind of entertainment. But after watching Godzilla on TV, three times by now, I had changed my mind about this particular production. It is really well done. In a way it reminds me at The Ghostbusters by the intentions - Family entertainment and fair fun with a touch irony. 1:53 But Men in Black is also a good reference. The script really has caught me and the actors gave their best. It never becomes cheesy as so many modern catastrophy and moster productions. Interesting how split up the reactions are to it.

I'd remembered when I was 9 seeing the first half of this on ABC Family (now Freeform) in May 2010. Gave up once the monster had arrived in New York.

I had a stretch of constantly flying coast to coast on red eyes in the 90s and at one point this was in the free movie rotation and you coukd hear Godzilla roaring even without headphones from the empty headphone jacks. That's all I remember: not being able to sleep cause of zilla screeching through the jack holes.

I saw this with friends when I was 9. Naturally I was stupid enough to love it lol. I find Broderick insufferable in any role that isn't Ferris Bueller. His Fred-Scooby Doo voice irritates the hell out of me. Jean Reno fucking rules though! Great review as always, Olly!

I was so looking forward to this film and then very disappointed when it was originally released. But watching it a few years ago as a bit of schlock, I actually enjoyed it. It's dumb but fun.

we went to go see this movie in theatres at our town's newest and biggest (21 screens) theatre. and the line wrapped about the building from the front to the back on premiere weekend, that was the 1st crazy line ive experienced for a movie. I was maybe 10 or 12 at the time. Keep making more vids, already subscribed and seen abunch of your reviews but i cant recall if you have ever watched/reviewed Robot Jox, if not please do. It seems we grow up during the same time and every movie you watched, ive also watched or have the same GREAT TASTE IN MOVIES :P

Genuinely unwatchable. The bouncing cars when he arrives is fantastic (something the new Zilla lacks imo, he seems very light footed for his size), but apart from that this is a shocking film with absolutely no redeeming factors apart from the late 90's fascination with CGI overindulgence. Also why in Gods name would you wave a lighter in the face of someone suffering from PTSD!?

I remember my dad taking me to the movie store, renting this on VHS and watching it over and over. It's not a good movie but I absolutely love it haha. One thing I remember is the commercials for it. The Taco bell dog needing a bigger box was my favorite. I was only 6 when it came out. But it's the first movie I remember actively watching

I liked this one (1998) more than the 2014. The newest tried to take itself to seriously and theres was too much of a homage to the old godzilla. Also, there was very little godzilla for a movie called "Godzilla".

I remember seeing this movie with my cousin Chucky. I was extremely pissed off. After the movie a bunch of us who saw the movie were talking about it. And I mentioned out loud that the Americans did what the Japanese have been trying to do for over 50yrs Kill Godzilla. That got a laugh from everyone. True story.

I think this should have been either called Zilla and then have it a monster/spinoff trilogy then the trilogy could build up to a Crossover with Godzilla vs Zilla

This was my first theater movie _ever_ and I still remember the awesome promotional events before the release date. I was a dumb kid who loves Godzuki at the time so it was the *sickest* thing ever, even now I still enjoy this movie and stand by the fact Godzillas Revenge is _the_ worst Godzilla movie ever. Besides Toho retconned this twice so the damage is nonexistent.

use to really like this film when i was like 7 or 8 but as i get older yeah it has not aged well. The Effects still hold up for the most part but it is just not a Godzilla movie. Godzilla 2014 was Muuuch better

Seriously when I ask a kid what godzilla is they be like that big dinasour in the movies a few months ago. I'm like yeah I guess. I ask someone my age (14) and they be like recent movie or the dinasour like t-Rex from 1998. I'm the only one in my grade who knows what godzilla actually is

i hate this movie nowadays (liked it as a stupid 8 year old) but at least it had more godzilla than 2014 then again, it was zilla, not godzilla so that cancels out so, dogshit

Yeah i was gonna say there is no Godzilla in the 98 film XD I agree the new film could have used more Godzilla but on the other hand i think the lack of screen time made his appearances all the more memorable and impactful.

William Amaro oh i agree at least on the first viewing. I remember in the theater there was actual cheering in the last battle when he finally showed up and KICKED ASS. the second viewing was more grumbling by everyone that there wasn't enough Godzilla kicking ass.
