Fun fact. G2000 is a sequel to the first Godzilla film and data hacked by millennian/orga on Godzilla mentions the 1954 attack in japanese text in both versions of the film. Its implied Orga got the idea to restrain godzilla with the powercables below the city from how the first Godzilla struggled to get through the powerlines.

Just saw 2000 for the first time in several years at the Fathom Event showing and I was taken off-guard by a lot of stuff I didn't remember. In particular, I thought the scenes of the text floating along the screens was actually really well done and eerie. I think they also did a better job of explaining what the alien actually was. However, I definitely agree that it could've used some editing down. I also missed the sound effect they used for the UFO in the American version. It just tickles my brain.

I will say it was the first real Godzilla movie I was able to see in the theater. My dad and I went together. Yeah, I was a bit older this time, but we both looked at it as a rite of passage. It was something he always promised me he would do when I was younger if a new Godzilla movie ever came out. Sure, we went to the 98 Godzilla together, but that was a huge fiasco and I also brought along a large group of friends. We had fun, but it didn't feel like a real Godzilla movie. This one did, but I will say being in the audience, it was a little disappointing. It was mostly young children. Like I felt like I was going to see a children's movie after a while. Normally I wouldn't care. I just thought that maybe at that time there were still people my age that love godzilla. Like people who are 15 or 16 or 17 years old. Now, none of that matters to me. If it's godzilla, I have a lot of fun watching it, no matter who with, or where I am. I will say that for its time, it was pretty good in regards to special effects. Sure. It didn't hold the candle to modern Hollywood effects, but for being a suit nation production, and blending the effects with cgi, it definitely held its own for its time

I grew up with the American dub like most people in the west, and I agree that the edits it makes are, generally, for the benefit of the movie. It's also one of the better dubs in the entire franchise, but ever since being able to watch the original Japanese cut I prefer to watch that over the dub. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to be able to watch the original intended version of a movie if possible.

This is one of my personal favorite Godzilla movies of all time. It came out the same year I was born too. I will say, it's really interesting to see what was in the original Japanese version that got cut from the U.S. version. I will say, one thing that got changed in the dub was at the scene where the guy says Great Ceaser's Ghost. I won't say what it was, but they did say on the DVD commentary that they cut what he originally said for the dub from the movie because they didn't think American audiences would like hearing it. Also, when you were talking about the missile scene and the sound effects of the missiles hitting Godzilla being changed, I'm glad they changed it in the U.S. version because watching the original sound effects in the Japanese version and the U.S. version in this video, when the missiles hit Godzilla, man do they sound very weak in the Japanese version. And man the music in the U.S. version is so good too.

Unfortunately the US version I'd seen only maybe 10-15 minutes of because I found the dialog and voice performances grating in comparison. I can appreciate that the US version seems to be a tighter edit and have a brighter picture. But I like the few lingering shots and background details of the Japanese edit, it has more room to breathe.

One weird detail about Godzilla 2000.. theres a scene where a monitor, or a bunch of monitors.. are scrolling through a text document... data supposedly. But when you look closer at it.. it turns out it's actually a read me file, or dat file, for an early build of the MAME arcade emulator.. and you can clearly see it listing off the games it supports. I wonder if that was added for the American version or if that was in the original as well

I wish that there were a version with the American cut (and the footage being much more clear/cleaned up looking) but with the original Japanese actor performances. I typically stick with the Japanese cut simply because I have a distaste for dubbed versions of...anything, really, so having a "best of both" edit would be very welcome. Interesting comparison, this was changed at least as much as Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985.

Saw this in theaters with my dad. Godzilla 2000 will always be my favorite. The US edit is basically a perfect movie. The minute you turn it on you notice the immersive sound, perfect pacing and hilarious dialogue. Godzilla movies have a reputation of funny bad dialogue, but often times it's just simply bad and not really funny. The US edit went all-in on having the characters say completely random stuff that makes you burst out laughing. Changing it from "old woman" to "imbecile" is the perfect example. Or the guys on the train lol. There's a whole little story going on there. There are so many funny lines. "Great Caesar's Ghost!" Why would he say that? It just kills me. Another thing that makes this movie stand out is that the human characters are not standing there explaining every little thing that's going on with the monsters as if they read the script. They figure some stuff out but for the most part it's left more mysterious. I would love to see other Godzilla movies especially of the Heisei series receive this same treatment. I can't help but really admire the pitch perfect tone that they were able to create, and how much unnecessary stuff they were able to correctly identify and cut out. Leaving the subject of the Millennium aliens out of it was a stroke of genius. Playing Godzilla's original theme song while he rolls into town is also genius. The movie winds up feeling a lot more focused on Godzilla himself. The fights are long, varied, and relatively uninterrupted. The suit acting is expressive and Godzilla's movement and reactions to things give him a lot of characterization. And we have to give credit to the best atomic ray ever conceived. It has never looked better and the charge up has never been used to greater effect. The way his spikes gradually heat up and you can almost feel the heat coming off them is so sick.

I would suggest you review the young adult and children's Godzilla books from the late '90s. I still have mine, and I periodically pull them out and re-read them-they are SO fun! (But they are kind of rare-I hope you can get access to them)

For some reason, almost no people talk about the difference between Godzilla's Atomic Breath sound in the 2 version. The Japanese sounds like Heisei Burning Godzilla which is way better, while the American one sounds like fire or sth else.

I wish we could get a cut with the original Japanese dub with the American editing and audio. That would probably be the best version for me.

Saw this in a theater, I’m guessing a lot of people might have thought this was a sequel to the 97 Godzilla, but half the theater walked out after realizing this was a subtitled film, HOW SAD is this, obviously NOT Godzilla fans😂

Yeah, I saw the differences first hand after seeing a re-release of the Japanese Dub of this movie a couple weeks ago; it was awesome and really made me appreciate the uncut dub.

I'd always heard that Sony made sure the dub wasn't great to make the film not be taken as well as the 98 one. The worst line in the dub is right before they shoot the rockets at Godzilla early on: "They'll go through him like crap through a goose!" :p

The "Great Caesar's ghost!" line was likely a subtle Superman reference, just to make the American-only line that much more American. The editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet, Perry White, will often utter the phrase when shocked or surprised.

Still my favorite Godzilla movie of all time and in case anyone is wondering, I’m talking about the American version! This was the first movie I ever saw and I saw it when it first came out in 1999 in theaters. I was 2 years old at the time!

2:27 In addition to all their "Godziller" dubs, Omni Productions also made the infamously terrible English language dubs of some Japanese Transformers cartoons that were made after the US cartoon had ended: Transformers: The Headmasters, Transformers: Masterforce, and Transformers: Victory. There are tons of clips on KZfaq. Here is a sample: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itCYdrF4qLGUYIE.html.

In the Japanese release, it lingers on a few shots of Godzilla where it clearly shows wires making the tail flop around, so I can understand some of the cut down scenes.

Ya know, a part of me wonders if Toho would've made a Godzilla film even if the Tristar film was more positively received. Like they'd try to make bank after it's success kinda like what happened with the 2014 Godzilla film leading to the creation of Shin Godzilla. What would that film be like? Would we still have Godzilla: 2000 or something else?
