One of the things that I really loved about the Godzilla in this film was all the work that went into his design. Outside of Shin Godzilla this one was one of the scariest. I love how realistic his lips rise when he snarls. Lots of animation in his head. Sadly much of which was lost in later films.

What I love about the American Dub is that they establish that this is the same Godzilla from 1955, which fits because we discover in Tue following movie that he has an amazing healing ability. It seems reasonable that, even with the oxygen destroyer dissolving his body, something might have survived that would take 30 years to regenerate. I was surprised to find in later years that TOHO preferred to bring in others of Godzilla is species instead of bringing back the original. At least until the Millennium series arrived. And even then, there was a second Godzilla user to fight the original. Absolutely beloved this Godzilla's design and roar.. Broke my heart as a kid to hear that scream as he fell into the volcano. I also appreciate the Raymond Burr scenes and I have often noted that his character doesn't contribute as much as he had in the American dub of the original movie, but still, as having, at the time, not seen the original Japanese Godzilla 54, having Steve Martin return made 85 seem like a genuine sequel to the "original'.

This was a huge mistake the American version made as Martin, as a reporter, would surely have made sure he knew how the Oxygen Destroyer worked. His saying they never found any corpse really should be removed. It just doesn't make sense.

The 1985 version will always be one of my favorite dubs of a godzilla film, mostly because it's what I grew up with. It introduced me to my favorite godzilla design. I kinda wish there the 1985 vers would have a DVD release or a bonus disk along with the sub and a more faithful dub for a future 1984 release.

Gotta say, I love the more horrific angle that the Japanese cut took, playing it like an actual horror movie for the most part. The shots of Godzilla simply standing make him feel like he’s a cold, intelligent beast as opposed to a mindless brute like in the US cut.

I’ve been on a Godzilla 1985 binge lately and this was exactly the video I was hoping to find. I was pumped when I finally saw the original Return of Godzilla on bluray - but the nostalgia brain knew something was off. It was the lingering shots of Godzilla doing nothing that really caught me off guard. But also the lack of his roar and footsteps, always present in the dub. Godzilla always feel right outside the building in the dub - it creates more tension. Great video! 1985> Godzilla Returns

I've seen both the original and the Americanized version and I lean towards the American version simply because they augmented the sound to where when Godzilla walks......you almost feel it! Some of Raymond Burr's moments are good. Especially his ending monologue. And the removal of the the slow Godzilla moments, him standing still, and the poor visual effects moments are a positive change. But the added comical moments, the "evil Russia" moments, and the Dr Pepper are terrible. If we could get a combined version, that would be great.

I agree that the "evil Russia" moments-having it portrayed that they actually wanted to launch rather than stop it was stupid, along with the Dr. Pepper parts. But I disagree with removal of all the footage of Godzilla standing still and just looking. The Japanese version, I think portrayed this moments as him thinking, being curious and confused. It made him seem like he was not always our to harm, kill or destroy. Also the American version failed when it tried to make it seem that this was not a new Godzilla, but the same one from 1954. That made no sense because the earlier American version plainly showed Godzilla was killed. Burr's character was portrayed as a good reporter, so Martin would have known how the means to kill Godzilla would work. that Godzilla was dead and this was a new one. I don't know what Burr was thinking to utter the line "they never found any corpse". Maybe he just missed that mistake. It really should be removed to show he knew this was a different creature.

The acoustics of his roar are different too, but you need to listen really well to hear. In the American 1985 film, his roar is more compressed, where as the 1984 Japanese version sounds a lot more echoy and vibrant. Think of it like listening to an MP3 Vs a vinyl record.

I prefer the Japanese version 99% of the time particularly with recent films. This is the one Godzilla film with changes where I prefer the American cut. The ending was the most important change. I’m big on music and Goodbye Godzilla while I’m with the tone of the 80s was a horrible fit for the most serious Godzilla film since the original. The American characters with the exception of Steve Martin really did nothing and added nothing, but the Nuclear missile collision made the tension more palpable as if they were the ones responsible for protecting Tokyo from the Soviet missile. Many of the other cuts and moves made sense particularly the scene where Godzilla charges the building after they use the bird signal. Not everything is good. I really like that reflection shot and am glad it was included in Godzilla vs Destroyah’s 95 credits or I may have never seen it (these end credits were removed from the English dub version). Sure it didn’t make sense based on the next shot but they could have rearranged that to get a beautiful shot of the big G. The Japanese version is debatably better sure. But it’s not like with the original where the original is far superior to the 56 US version .
@JeffreyDeCristofaro
@JeffreyDeCristofaro 3 жыл бұрын
I remember being really young and watching the American version GODZILLA 1985 before age 10; believe it or not, it was theatrically released in the US over a week before I was even born! (I didn't even know until later how much I was THAT connected to the Big Guy.) And I remembered so much how I cried at the end before Burr's closing monologue. That being the case, as with most instances involving the discrepancy between Japanese and American versions, I prefer the original '84 version. It actually had way better plot development and a far more intelligible approach, not to mention a highly-nonpartisan view of the Cold War superpowers. I really hate how the American version had to Reaganize the content by splicing in the comically-evil-Russians subplot, and not only was that version stupid, but the heavy editing also reduced the spectacle of the original Japanese version, even if there was a lot of padding out of scenes and awkward inconsistencies in showing uneven effects (cutting between a difficult-to-maneuver 20' cybot Godzilla and the suits, which also happened before in the 1976 KING KONG) which didn't even escape the American product. But I will give the American version this much - it did have some additional, inherently creepy minimalist music provided by HELLRAISER (1987) composer Christopher Young in the Burr & Co. scenes (HELLRAISER was financed by New World Pictures, after all) and during the end credits, and if you pay close enough attention, you can distinguish it from the original Japanese music score excerpts. And its own opening title was pretty badass as well!

I think The Bum dies of radiation exposure in the Japanese version, but they didn't want it to be "too graphic." Kyodai Kino's "Red Menace" reconstruction project (just Google it, kids) did a fine job with _Godzilla 1985_ (US Version). It's great to have it in HD again. I can enjoy either version, but I appreciate the New World cut trimming away overlong scenes and the clumsier effects (particularly that prop leg/foot with the hard-cut claws) when they could. On the other hand, I really resent them altering the Russian subplot to such an extent. And while Burr performs it so well, *grammatically speaking* that final speech is a disaster. One of the biggest differences in the two is the Japanese version establishes that Godzilla hibernates in Volcanos and they are sending him back to sleep, the American version turns it into a cruel action which I think is just gross. Godzilla swims in Lava which is well established. The reason Goji stands around is him thinking. He is meant to be confused trying to figure things out. In the Japanese version Goji is not the enemy, he is a force of nature, the US version totally ruins that whole subplot. The Japanese version is better in every case of Goji film.

I agree with you about the Japanese version having Godzilla just standing doing nothing. It shows that he is curious, and yes, confused. Also, it might show that he is not always ready to kill humans or cause destruction. Where the American version fails is having Burr's character act like the original Godzilla never was killed. This makes no sense as he, as a good reporter would have made sure he knew how the oxygen destroyer was to be used, how it worked. And even in Godzilla, King of the Monsters, it plainly shows him dead and why there would be no corpse found. Steve Martin would have known this. The Godzilla in the Japanese and American version are plainly a new Godzilla. Not the one from 1954.

played the vhs of the dub to death as a kid, but these days I prefer the original by a country mile. That said, I agree with some of the comments that the dub does trim the fat a bit and flows a little better in some places, also burr's ending speech is imo sorely missed in the original.

I say the US version is better than the Japanese version. The US editing is more smoother and flow, even though certain scenes were reused. The sound editing, and the pace is better too than the Japanese version.

not gonna lie, this was my FIRST Godzilla movie. I can remember renting this from rogers or blockbuster movie stores just looking for the version that started with "Godzilla vs Bambi" its the reason i got into miniature painting, the reason i got into building miniature buildings/cities, and the reason i LOVED power rangers when it first came out. The Green rangers Dragon Zord= MECHA Godzilla Zord, and i LOVE it. FUCK THESE MOVIES ARE AWESOME!

Even for its flaws, I prefer the American cut more. The opening/closing to the film are just more superior to the original '84. Even though he doesn't add anything to the plot. Just HAVING a character from the original Gojira attack just adds another layer to this film. Like, Burr as Martin plays it perfectly like, "You fucks don't know what you're in for." It makes a better bookend to vs. Destroyah with Emiko showing up in that. It also cuts the needless fat that dragged the movie in the original. I don't say this being TOTALLY being influenced as well of 1985 being the first Godzilla movie I saw in a theater that I still crisply and vividly remember each moment watching that film and the theater I saw it in (which I remember my aunt had taken me to see it then later King Kong Lives cause my aunt was fucking awesome to me when I was a kid). Further, a friend and I once did a test for our movieathons we used to have with our friends before crazy year of 2020. One time we played the original, right around when Godzilla shows up everyone was just bored to death begging to put another movie in. They were just so darn bored. The American version? People were glued. They were entertained at its corniness (that young military dude you just wish Martin punched in the face and crazy evil Soviets I'm looking at you). As for your wondering, we were able to watch the 1985 version? Well, there was a version years ago that someone uploaded to Megaupload or Mediafire posted it on a Facebook Godzilla group that was basically an HD version of this version of the film that was on an on demand channel (I think). Being an opportunist. I bought a goddamn large ass jump drive card, uploaded the huge ass file onto it, went to another friend who I know who had the hardware for this, and asked him to burn the film to a blu-ray disc. He did. I put the copy in my '84 Blu-Ray so I have BOTH versions in the proper place. Now if you excuse me. I really need to have a Dr. Pepper.

I prefer the American cut for this film, as well as for 2000. I'm a bit mixed on which version of King Kong Vs. Godzilla I enjoy more, as I'm nostalgic for the American cut and all it's goofy little moments and music cues, but that Japanese cut has the Ifukube music, some of his all-time best too. And as much as I enjoy the original Godzilla: King of the Monsters cut, Gojira is simply untouchable, once you've seen the OG, it's hard to go back, even for Raymond Burr.

This is the only Godzilla film one of Friends care about because this friend of me is a really big History geek, and one of the two events in history he really likes to talk about is WW1 & The Cold War, Especially The Cold War. And when I was rambling about Godzilla one day to him, he didn't really care about it, and felt bored, but when I mentioned how The American Version of Godzilla 1985 Purposely put the wrong Translation for what the Soviets are doing just to make them Look Like Assholes, He Laughed His Ass off, and actually made him somewhat interested in this film (or at least the changes) because of it.

I grew up watching 1985, i have searched and searched for it on DVD or blu-ray to no avail thanks to some copy right issue. I bought the blu-ray of Godzilla Returns which is the Japanese version if you will, and ugh! Not the same as what i grew up with and Raymond Burr’s speech at the end is classic!

I think if the Japanese version cut a lot of the scenes like the American cut - Godzilla standing idly, shots lingering too long, etc. But kept the subplots intact, it would be the best version. Raymond Burr was completely under utilized, and I wish they could have done more with him. Both versions are good, and I do consider them to be different movies. I wouldn't mind having both versions on DVD/Blu Ray. But I don't think we'll get an official release of 1985 anytime soon.

I love the 1985 American version with Burr. It was the third Godzilla movie I ever saw and I was 4 years old at the time. Because of that I never thought of the Russians as nuclear weapons crazed mad men who wanted to start WWIII; I didn’t even know what a Russian was (I was 4 remember). I just saw someone who thought launching a nuclear weapon to save the world and kill Godzilla was the right thing to do; and after seeing what the big G did to the JSDF, can you really blame him, Godzilla seemed unstoppable; what would you do. Plus the editing in the American version fixed pacing problems, dead air due to there not being any/not enough music, dialogue, and/or sound effects, also the removal of all the intentional and unintentional goofy stuff made the film more tonally consistent, and made it better able to be taken seriously. In addition Godzilla looked like less of a guy in a suit, and more like an actual flesh and blood creature, which helped with the immersion. Lastly the final wail of Godzilla’s at the end always made me feel sad for him, and so I always sympathized with Godzilla more (then even Kong); and who could forget Burr’s speech at the end “Nature has a way sometimes of reminding man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up the terrible offsprings of our pride and carelessness, to remind us of how punny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake, or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences, but for now Godzilla that strangely innocent and tragic monster has gone to her, and whether he returns or not, or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us, remain”. So good.

Overall I almost always prefer whatever cut I see of a movie first (some kind of originality bias) and Godzilla 1985 was one of my favorite movies as a child. The Japanese version I like because it feels much more expanded and complete, but the US version’s action scenes are cut so much tighter and better. The whole sequence around the nuke exploding in orbit feels much better paced in the US version. What annoys me the most about the US version are the added scenes with the Pentagon officers standing around. They tie it in pretty well in one instance; where the General calls Kadena Missile Base to shoot down the Russian Nuke, but otherwise they’re just a Greek Chorus.

Okay, I'm about halfway through and I just noticed this and have to ask; what's up with the U.S. flag?! It's got 38 stars, it's the flag from the 1870s! I'm honestly curious, is this some in-joke for long-time viewers or just an error on your part or what. If it's some subtle commentary or satire, I'll admit, it went over my head.
