Don't worry, I cried numerous times in the theater during this movie, and I'm a hardened 50ish yr old. Its wild, you can take the entire concept of Godzilla out of this movie and you'd STILL have a great period drama.

Fun fact: Godzillas spike charge up of his Atomic breathe in this movie emulate control rods in a nuclear reactor that increase nuclear fission :) great reaction ty.

In Japan, some people say that the human drama is cheesy, that there are many inconsistencies, and that the acting is deliberate. However, if I may venture to say so, it is precisely because we live in the modern age that there is a demand for simple, royalistic movies in which people unite and cooperate with each other to overcome difficulties, rather than foreshadowing, twist and turns, and clever psychological depictions. In fact, the majority of people have received Godzilla favorably this time around, with few people complaining about it.

The film is called Minus One because post World War II left Japan in ruins. They had to start all over again from ground Zero to build back up. Then Godzilla shows up and wrecks even more havoc. Sending them from Zero to Minus One! Even further back than before. -OG

This movie is so damn good. I saw it here in the US and I’m very picky when it comes to movies, but this was just a masterpiece.

You two remind me of my brother and I when we were kids back in 1969/70 when we'd rush home to see the movies they were showing on "Godzilla Week" on the afternoon movie. We'd sit and watch with our tv trays and dinner while watching the Showa era films. This was a great reaction. You can tell you're true Godzilla fans, and yes, the first Godzilla film where I think we all cried. Thanks for a great watch.

I think it’s called ‘Minus One’ because of how Japan was at its lowest point and then Godzilla shows up to make things worse. I remember seeing this in the cinema and being shocked and awe struck by how fantastic it was as a piece of dramatic writing! It’s beautiful to look at, and the acting is outstanding! It really harkens back to what Godzilla is actually about, and in my opinion is the best film since the 1954 original.

As great as the CGI was, it winning the OSCAR & people like this guy so focused in on the cgi, actually does the film a disservice imo. The fact is, the story, scrrenplay, & acting is the real reason to watch this, as alot of critics are saying the Oscar committee cheated GMO from winning multiple awards. Christopher Noland "Oppenheimer " said he loved everything about it, & Steven Spielberg told Takashi Yamazaki he loved the acting so much, he saw it 3 times already. That said, excellent reaction from 2 true Godzilla fans. Well done guys : )

As a 12 year GWoT (Global War on Terrorism) veteran, I can testify that Shikishima's PTSD and Survivor's Guilt is super-realistic. Nightmares, tremors, and hallucinations are a very real thing for many returning Veterans. It takes YEARS of therapy and help to recover from War. I hate War. I hope I am never forced to kill again.

The plan with Godzilla to kill him with the pressure changes is sort of what was foreshadowed earlier in the movie with the deep sea fish coming up to the surface too fast. Their stomachs exploded out their mouths. Godzilla is a force of nature, and the idea is to let the very same force of nature work against him. -OG

The only Godzilla movie to capture the spirit of the OG from my childhood in the 60's.

I think it's called Minus One because at the end of the war Japan was basically at zero due to the destruction. Godzilla made it minus one. By the way, Godzilla attacks a train in the original. In fact, that's the first issue of Fangoria. So I'm pretty sure it's a call back to the original Godzilla not King Kong.

Godzilla attacked the light because it was startled. Godzilla didn't attack Shikishima because he wasn't a threat. He then attacked the others because they fired on him. Proportional response in a way. Proportional response to mutation and pain due to nuclear testing? Destroy everything.

Fun fact: Takashi Yamazaki the director of this film is a big fan of Godzilla, he also featured Godzilla as cameo in "Always: Sunset on Third Street" on 2005 and he is the director of "Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle" which have same design for Godzilla in this film

Shikishima "redeemed" himself in multiple ways. But as a draftee, was he ever really at fault??? Shikishima was just a tool of his government. His guilt is palpable. Like me, he survived an insane, unending war.

This Godzilla movie takes a lot from the Heisei era movies and makes them its own. This is one of the best Godzilla movies I have seen. You guys should watch the whole Heisei era Godzilla movies that start in 1984 and end in 1995. There are the gold standard for Toho movies.

Godzilla Minus One (2023) is the best Godzilla film ever made. The film is a fitting, loving tribute to Godzilla’s 70th anniversary made by people with great reverence for the 1954 original. Godzilla Minus One is testament to the talent and dedication of director Takashi Yamasaki, his crew and wonderful cast. The film has great storytelling, visual effects and fine acting with characters that truly resonate with audiences. Performances by leads Ryunosuke Kamiki (Kōichi Shikishima) and Minami Hamabe (Noriko Ōishiwere) excellent. The film features the coolest and most terrifying Godzilla we have ever seen - an unstoppable force of nature that can annihilate everything in its path. Godzilla Minus One fully deserved every award it won, especially Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

Director Yamazaki said *Gm1 was inspired by the very first "Gorjila" movie 1954, also the Hollywood classics like "Jaws", "Jurrassic Park".. and lastly the *Covid Pandemic 2019. *Godzilla Minus One is surely a classic in movie history..

Just pointing out, since everyone seems to ask "why didn't they just both jump into the alley," the atomic beam was basically a nuke that exploded a few blocks away from them. The movie slowed down the moment for cinematic purposes, but it was a split second reaction from Noriko.

The mark on her neck is a Godzilla cell. It's probably why she survived the blast. It helped heal her. But to what end? Will it mutate her. Are there other victims of the Godzilla cell? She is more right than she realizes when she notices the thing on Noriko's neck an asks, "Is she gonna be the next Godzilla"? Apparently, that thing on her neck is a G-Cell. A piece of Godzilla's DNA!!!

I love Shikishima's character arch: a failed kamikaze pilot returned home in disgrace, everyone dumps everything on him and he feels the extreme weight of his shame, meets Noriko and Akiko and starts taking care of them (while still dealing with the shame), and finally regains his honor and his life in the final confrontation (and shows what a fearless fighter pilot he really was!) and comes home with a real reason to live; Noriko and Akiko (who was soooo adorable, btw!) Like Shin Godzilla, ToHo brings Godzilla back to what he originally was: an enemy of Man. a mindless creature bent on senseless destruction; a metaphor for war itself, and for Godzilla; the threat of nuclear war. I thought Shin Godzilla was the scariest incarnation of him since the original, but I'm mistaken, THIS is clearly the scariest incarnation of Godzilla! maybe half the size of Shin as well as Legendary, but the power of his ranged attack... worse than anything else ever done! and for all the awards and nominations the film has made worldwide, it was because Godzilla strolled up, pointed to the production team, and looked menacingly at the ones who makes the decisions.

The original classic 1954 Godzilla movie did not have the "American" in it as you put it. Actor Raymond Burr. A.k.a. Perry Mason. The original Godzilla movie was just called Godzilla. You watched Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It's the same story except the "American" reporter was added to the background, acting as a spectator reporting and narrating Godzilla for those of us who don't speak Japanese. Lol. -OG

A majority of the effects here are actually practical. This film beat 300 million dollar films in effects costing only 54 million. Don't forget that The Boy and the Heron also stole away Best Oscar Animated film from Disney too.

This movie is so good. I think it's the best Godzilla ever made. There are a lot of influences on that, the movie is not shy in its homages: King Kong obviously (fun fact, King Kong was the inspiration to Ishiro Honda, the creator of Godzilla). Jurassic Parc, especially the scene on Odo island. Jaws. The 1954 original Godzilla. The radio crew reporting on Gozilla as he's nearby and him killing them is almost a scene by scene homage to the original. Shin Godzilla. And acording to Minus One director, the 2001 Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters all-out Attack has been the biggest influence, from how just ruthless Godzilla looks and acts, to how he dies (from using the atomic breath against him to blow him up from the inside). But all these homages don't detract from the tight script, superb acting and engaging drama. Godzilla minus one is one of those rare Kaiju film where you acutally give a shit about the human characters. Just an all around great film. Not just a great Kaiju movie but a great one and destined to become an absolute classic of cinema for the generations to come.

This was the best Godzilla movie the only thing I miss is the Oxygen destroyed. The movie was definitely robbed of more nominations and awards because U.S. just hates Japanese culture Can wait till theres a DVD set with OG 1954 movie Shin Godzilla and this one Minus One as a set of all Godzilla origins movie. Younger people may not know this but the jet Shikishima is flying would have been one of the first jets ever made. The Germans invented the rockets and the jet airplanes near the end of World War 2. They made a secret fleet of jets for the Japanese to use to defend the mainland against the American invasion. The Japanese never got to use them because the Americans dropped the atomic bombs instead.

If you haven't seen the Japanese original 54 movie, you definitely should. There's an "Americanized," version that adds scenes and new actors and changes stuff and it's not terrible, but just feels like a generic monster movie of that era, while the Japanese movie is a sober, meaningful and dark film that's important to the history of cinema. Honestly, I love the campy Showa era ones too, and the 90s Heiesi era films might surprise you with how good some of the practical effects look. Almost all of them are better in Japanese with Godzilla 2000 being an exception as the American theatrical release is just edited better than the Japanese version for some reason.

Bombing of Tokyo destroyed Tokyo more extensively than Godzilla did, and if you search for Bombing of Tokyo, you can see pictures of Tokyo reduced to zero. I thought the destruction of Godzilla in the movie was nothing.

Japanese creators usually borrow ideas as a tribute to the former creators. Godzilla's charge up reminds me of Space Battleship Yamamoto/Star Blazers (US Adaption) wave motion gun.
