Watched it last night in IMAX & I had to remind myself to breathe a few times. That's how engrossed I was. It almost felt like I was there on more than one occasion. Will definitely watch it again before it leaves theaters. If I had to pick just 1 favorite kaiju movie it would probably be the 1954 Japanese "Godzilla" & the U.S. 1956 version "Godzilla: King Of The Monsters". I know some purists consider the U.S. version to be an abomination but I thought it was brilliant how the U.S. footage was edited into the original. I like both versions equally.

I think the humans were so interesting because it was a period piece. I honestly forgot I was watching a Godzilla movie for a moment because I'm a history buff and haven't seen postwar Japan that close portrayed on film. Even in the original there isn't everyone in slums etc. that I recall. Plus the focus being on a Kamakazi pilot was something Hollywood wouldn't do

My biggest gripe with Godzilla films over the last decade and a half or so has been the lack of the films coming as a complete package. The monster action is almost always fun and exciting to watch, which is great. Who doesn't love it? But the problem is that monster alone isn't what the franchise or the IP of Godzilla has been about. Look back at 1954. That film was a human focused story through and through with Godzilla serving as the foil, or the obstacle to be overcome for humanity. That's why it gained cult status back in that period before Godzilla's popularity exploded with King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962. Following that and maybe Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), his popularity and appeal slowly dwindled until it tanked by the mid 70's. They put him on ice, and revived the franchise in 1984 with, say it with me now, a human focused story with Godzilla as the foil/antagonist. This is where Godzilla is at his best. When he's serving either as THE foil/antagonist, or being an anti-hero who assists humanity by nature of his actions (rather than any sense of him being a true "ally" so much happening to share the same goal as humanity), that's where the true magic of the IP comes into play. And, sadly, most modern Godzilla films have forgotten this reality. Shin Godzilla was a decent attempt, but it completely forgot to actually engage the metaphors Godzilla stood for by glossing over each one of them with no visible consequences or backlash for them happening and just focused on the overabundant human cast and political satire built into the heart of its narrative. In short, it forgot it was a Godzilla film and more happened to feature a weird redesign of the creature for the sake of serving that foil/antagonist role rather than him actually NEEDING to be there. Minus One returns to the 1954 formula by focusing on a well written, emotional, and dramatic human story which seamlessly blends itself with Godzilla's presence and purpose as the foil/antagonist. This is why the film is succeeding across the board and is soaring high on review sites like RT with even critics giving it a 95%+ positive rating. Minus One is a complete package. It doesn't focus purely on the monster action, nor does it focus purely on the human element. It blends the two together with purpose and meaning and gives us all a complete package to enjoy, and I'm here for it all day every day.

I have no doubts that there will be at least a couple nominations. The sound design was fantastic (coming from an audio guy), the effects (for a $15 million budget) were spectacular, and all around the film's cinematography and direction were top notch. Hollywood, take some fucking notes please. THIS is how you make a Godzilla film. Not the increasingly Marvel-esque crap they've been putting together in the latest Monsterverse films (especially A New Empire, if you've seen the trailer).

3:51 Godzilla's main power is literally called the Atomic Breath, most all versions of Godzilla have the own version of the Atomic Breath each one different and more powerful than the other. The only of the Atomic Breath that is similar to Minus One Godzillas is 2001 GMK Godzilla which is no surprise because Director Takashi Yamazaki is fan of GMK.

It’s funny, I had the opposite feeling about the pacing for Shin Godzilla. Cuz I’m a huge Neon Genesis fan, Shin is like a dream come true for me. But I loved how destructive this Godzilla was
@Ben_Kudo
@Ben_Kudo 7 ай бұрын
there's one thing I'd might add about why people would think Shin Godzilla was not well paced is becaused it was reflecting on the Japanese Government's bad and slow response to the Triple Disaster in Japan back then which was the Fukushima nuclear accident and Shin Godzilla was the embodiment of the Triple Disaster. There's a video by Cynical Justin called The Hidden Terror of Shin Godzilla, he sums up pretty well about the message that the movie was conveyin, since in Japan, Godzilla is more of a "tool" to reflect that era's struggles and pain.

@TWDub
@TWDub 7 ай бұрын
That's probably part of it. But another part is that the Shin Godzilla film forgot one very important element of Godzilla's presence: the IMPACT of it. What happened to the people and the properties damaged by the water flooding be brought with him during his first appearance?... We don't know because they don't show anything. What happened to all those trampled or who managed to evade him waddling through the streets destroying homes and businesses as he went?... We don't know because they didn't show it. What happened to those in the areas most directly affected by the radiation he left behind?... We don't know because they didn't show it. All of the major metaphors to real life disasters Godzilla stood for were glossed over in a matter of seconds before they moved on to the next and then eventually forgot about them. Good storytelling focuses on a few things: Setups and their respective payoffs, consequences of actions and words, and showing rather than telling. Shin Godzilla failed all three. It gave us a nice visual spectacle while pointing out the failings of the Japanese government. But in focusing on its political satire message it failed to setup or pay off anything related to Godzilla or the story in general, rather just dropping everything on us whenever they felt like it. They failed to show the consequences of Godzilla's appearances and instead continued to simply move from scene to scene which lessened the impact of each appearance. And they routinely told rather than showed what was going on. All in all, even though some parts of Shin were fun to watch I don't believe it holds a candle to this film. Not even close.

I did not understand when people said they were scare of this Godzilla… hahaha… until I saw the movie myself…. The eyes were scary even though we don’t get any perspective from Godzilla. Being American, I guess Pacific Rim is the best kaiju movie? I’m sure there are great Japanese monster movies that never made it to our shores except in niche communities. Spoiler talk…. The “surprises” at the end felt cheap, but it did make for happy ending, which I did not mind after all the suffering these people went through…
@TWDub
@TWDub 7 ай бұрын
There's definitely an element of uber plot armor for that ending. However, to be fair, there were survivors from ground zero of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They died in the days which followed, obviously. But they survived the initial blast. So, even though it's VERY UNLIKELY that this ending could/would happen, it's not impossible.
@brianng8350
@brianng8350 7 ай бұрын
@@TWDub As I said, I am okay with the ending. But she was very close to Godzilla and the blast. If the blast can blow cars and topple buildings and she is blown many blocks that she was unconscience for number of weeks, her survival seems impossible. She should have broken parts from the blast, being tossed around and debris hitting her, then burns from the blast, radiation poisoning. She should be all bandaged up... hahaha... But I love happy endings. I wish the end credit had a picture of them getting married and Akiko as flower girl -the unconventional family finding happiness in the midst of all the chaos.

@MoviesAndMunchies
@MoviesAndMunchies 7 ай бұрын
It's all in Japanese, so when I saw it there were English subtitles. I think you can get a lot of the emotional weight just from the actors' expressions, but there might be certain points where the dialog is important to understanding key interactions. I still think that you can get a ton of connection with the human characters though.

I think most foreign audience will appreciate this a bit more due to the fast pacing and less political focused plot. I watch tonnes of Japanese movies and live close to Japan, both shin and minus one are great. Not surprised the average movie goers especially non Asian film centric would find some part slow. These are Japanese movie traits, especially in social/political genre. Minus one does better than Shin because it has a bit more "stage play" setup.
