The President of Toho, Koji Ueda, explained that Minus One refers to the fact that the devastation of the war brought Japan to 0. Once Godzilla shows up, it brought the Country into Minus.

Not to sound rude to you@@Alteori , but how did you not realize that? This movie takes place 2 years after WW2 ended and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is still fresh in people's mind and that disaster made Japan lost everything down to literal zero. The only thing that is worse than a zero is a minus one and the last thing the Japanese people needed is a giant monster wreaking havoc, reducing the country from Zero to Minus. So when they thought things could not get worse, it did get worse when Godzilla shows up. Hence Minus One.

@@xaviergrimes8156 Both the teaser and the official trailers literally said that Japan has lost everything from post WW2 and "From zero to minus!". I heard some people theorized that the minus one means that there are 2 Godzillas in this movie and one of them will get killed off, but that is just a theory for now. So the most obvious meaning for minus one is going below rock bottom when Godzilla rampages Japan right after Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I think the phrase "From zero to minus" is describing the people. They had just lost everything in the last war, now a giant monster is destroying everything they didn't even know they could lose, making them feel like they have less than nothing left.

It's just a rumor at this point, but I've heard talk of there being TWO Godzillas in this movie, one hostile, one benevolent. Again, just rumor right now, but in the original Godzilla, Godzilla attacked Japan because he came from an underwater cavern habitat that was destroyed by the H-bombs with other members of his species. That could be the reason for the charred Godzilla, one of his kin that was killed by weapons testing. I hope that this is going to be the jumping point for Toho doing a universe again. I can already tell this movie is gonna have so much emotion and deep connections with the main characters.

Getting MASSIVE Gojira 1954 vibes. In the first ever Gojira film, back in 1954, Godzilla is basically the antagonist. His role as villian, however, is the famous alagory he stands for, which was established in his first ever movie. Godzilla is basically punishment for our sins. It was a massive critique of Nuclear Weapons use and the consequences such power can lead to. The scientist in the 1954 film is meant to be the ideal man when handling such power. He kills godzilla with his Oxygen Destroyer, but to make sure no one else can use it or build one, he takes all tbe knowledge with him and uses the device on himself as well as Godzilla, killing them both. He dies with honor and takes the lesson of ensuring such power can not be abused by others due to his sacrifice of having the knowledge die with him. Godzilla is supposed to be a Horror film. This is likely not going to be that great on a horror aspect, but it will feel very strongly like a disaster film, except the disaster is basically Man-Made. Theres is going to be a big lesson here, possible on the criticism of war and power as well as the recklessness of Mankind.

This, the original, and Shin Godzilla, are all "Godzilla vs. Japan": a giant metaphor attacks Japan, and the Japanese must work together as a people to defeat it. The profound message comes with understanding what Godzilla is specifically a metaphor for in each case. The other Japanese Godzilla movies are fun, but these three are serious films. The Legendary Godzilla movies are also very different in terms of ideas and themes, but they are great moves, although the message isn't as important or clear.

This movie might be an interesting opportunity to be a counterpoint to Oppenheimer. Basically have a character similar to him shown in a scene witnessing or reciving reports of the event. Or even an American theater crowd seeing a newsreel of the event tearing up realizing what they unleashed. Basically make the ending of the film a sort of Twilight Zone ending of while yes America did manage to stop the onslaught of the Japanese military upon the pacific rim they created not the threat of impending nuclear war but a animal based threat that can be as dangerous as a actual nuclear bomb but last longer as a nuke explosion lasts just a few minutes but a Kaiju attack can last for days or even months.

I can confirm the "minus" isn't a reference to a prior film in the series. Aside from the marketing itself, saying that with Godzilla arriving after the war they people went from zero to minus-one, I think there are at least two somewhat visual puns going on. First, "minus one" is overtly the English title. In Japanese the title is "Godzilla -1.0", which look rather like Godzilla version 1-point-0. The very first version with more versions to come. But with the film being (re)set to seven years before 1954, the interpretation as "minus one" clarifies this isn't set in the original time period, even though in other regards it's a remake of G54. Second, as bad as Godzilla is, things clearly get worse after they nuke him. (In this version Godzilla is around and attacking before he's hit with a nuke, at least directly.) The situation goes from bad to worse, from zero to minus 1.
@Randoverse10 ай бұрын
Godzilla was made from the H-bomb. Wonder if there going with a new branch of a story as many other versions do as well? The studio that made this move stated minus one meant there economy went form zero to negative. Nothing to do with his evolution.

I guess Toho really liked the design of Legendary's version of Godzilla because the new design for this version is very, very similar. This is in stark contrast to the 98' Zilla where they were so embarrassed by the new look, they actually wrote it into the film canon that the Americans were mistaken and they were attacked by something else entirely. Then, later had it make the smallest blink or you'll miss it cameo during a major fight, where it gets bytch slapped into oblivion and obliterated before it can even be properly introduced.

@GBDupree10 ай бұрын
If you can, you could consider watching the original 1954 version. To see where it all began, and it is a classic. Minus One might be a pseudo remake of it, but I don't think it will be too much of a spoiler. If older movies aren't your thing, then maybe Shin Godzilla. However, Shin does have a lot of political talk in it that slows it down. Though Its really unique in that aspect, because its showing how the government has to deal with the attacks, and its actually really compelling and clever, and the Godzilla stuff is truly great if a bit unique as well. But if political thrillers aren't your thing, then maybe try King of the Monsters. Its more the hero style of Godzilla movies, and is part of the American Monsterverse, but its still just a fun wild ride that gives you a good intro to his rogues gallery of other monsters. You really don't need to watch Godzilla 2014 to understand it, but you could (though its not the most exciting unless you are already a fan, I feel). The 1998 American Godzilla gets a lot of flak for not actually being Godzilla, but more like a King Kong version of him, but it has a lot of charm (a couple of the cast is Simpsons voice actors), and I think its just a fun movie to check out. Though maybe after you get a proper introduction to the character first, since its so different. Those are good starts, then if you can enjoy some older stuff, definitely go onto the Heisei era films (basically the 80s-90s ones). I think anyone of them would be fine, some are cheesier than others, but they are good either way. Plus, the live action effects really are cool to see for the art of it. If you do end up wanting to watch more of the Monsterverse, you can, but for King Kong I suggest watching the 2005 Peter Jackson's King Kong first. Its a great remake that does well to portray the timelessness of the classic movie. Its long though, with an even longer Director's cut, but I think its worth the time. Then that way you understand the original version of King Kong, so when you go to the Monsterverse's Skull Island movie, you can kind of see how they reinterpreted the original story into a new hero version of the character (plus its not a remake but a different story altogether, just with some similarities). Then you should be set to watch Godzilla Vs. Kong. There are plenty of Godzilla movies, so hopefully this will help you know where to start and which ones to get to know the character the best. If you do get hooked, then you can branch out to the Heisei or other era ones, if you aren't bothered by the cheese they can sometimes have. But even most fans haven't made it that far admittedly, since it can sometimes be harder to enjoy older movies for most people. Have Fun!

The clock tower you were asking about is a reference to the original Gojira, the minus means people were already beaten down to nothing , morally , financially , the terms of their surrender demilitarization, and national pride was down to near zero. Godzilla seems to be the twist of the dagger to an already bleeding culture and country. Also we maybe watching the birth of what we know as godzilla , some of the old comics I read indicated goji was just a a dinosaur like creature living with his family , lost his family in the nuke , but more importantly the nuke is what gave him his dark gray or black skin , and his atomic power , and he felt was rage and pain . The trailer definitely hyped me up. Better than the last couple teasers. So far the cg looks really good, theming looks good, and the characters already looks captivating. My only caveat is if this will be yet another interpretation of 54, still feels too similar to what we seen I rather have some thing new and fresh. Really wanna think with the whole classified board maybe they’re pulling a MV not some reinterpretation of that whole meeting and reveal from the first movie. I’m all booked for watching Minus one definitely looking to clear my calendar for December 1st.

Godzilla is my childhood fav movie it’s probably the first movie I watched that was from a different country and started watching more movies from around the world and I have to agree that Japan has a better entertainment system I’ve always wanted to learn more about their culture Japan is an honorable country the people there can be amazing and humble at the same time I want to retire in Japan when I get older it’s such a beautiful place

This already looks amazing. It's definitely going to be paying homage to the original 1954 Goji like Shin Godzilla did.

Watched without instantly looking at the screen thought the first 5 seconds of this video was Alteori mimicking Japanese out of sheer excitement

So the meaning of "minus one" is that Japan was "at zero" due to their defeat in WW2. Godzilla appearing now takes Japan down "minus one" due to the impact this will have on Japan. This is also a stand alone film

i believe the charred skin on godzilla is what he's supposed to look like, probably being similar to the burn wounds caused by the hiroshima bombing like in the 1954 film. this would imply that they're following the storyline of godzilla being a mutated and scarred creature who wants revenge on mankind

Love your reaction. Couldn't help notice when you said battleship and what was on screen was more a fishing boat (a la Lucky Dragon). Lol. You're adorable

The reason I love Kaiju is because of there power and destruction and how animalistic and tactical they are all especially Godzilla who uses tons of battle experiences, also I'm pretty sure that string on the ship might be kumonga or maybe mothra but I'm pretty sure it's kumonga

I can't wait. If the rumors are true that there will be two separate Godzilla entities in this, it could be bigger than even monsterverse. Because the only thing better than Godzilla, is Godzilla kicking monster ass!

I don’t want any monster fights, let Godzilla just kill humans like the original.

The very first godzilla movie, he was destroying everything, he was far from friendly, it was later iterations when he becomes a hero.

The ship in the scene with the white line coming off of it. I *believe* that is a fishing trawler and a tuna net. Tuna fishing was one of the few surviving industries in post-war Japan.

Some versions of Godzilla are basically superheroes, like the second Showa one after Ghidorah. Legendary Godzilla seems good as well. I always felt he went out of his way to avoid killing when he can. He also only was targeting humans in vs Kong because they were making an abomination. This Godzilla is likely vengeful like in the original or GMK.

the minus name is reference to how this movie takes place shortly after WW2 and after the bombings they hit rock bottom or “Zero” and godzilla brings them down to minus. Also this is a completely new cannon, its not connected to any other film or godzilla

Don't know why people are getting mad about your view on the monster verse Godzilla. It's pretty spot on. You said it best, he "tolerates" us to a point. Lol

Minus one is in reference to how post World War 2, Japan had lost everything and was at zero(rock bottom). They didn't think it could get any worse, and then Godzilla showed up, and it got worse, and they went to Minus One or Negative.
