Godzilla's heat ray during the Takao scene ignited both excitement and dread, as soon as I saw that cyan glow I knew everyone on that battleship was gonna die in a big fiery ball of death. The Ginza scene started off the same way, but as soon as that atomic fireball went off I felt my heart drop into my stomach. I don't think a Godzilla movie has ever made me experience such a suffocating feeling of dread before.

I can understand that you were sad! I was sad when Godzilla destroyed Ginza which had just been beautifully repaired after WWll. Unlike Hollywood's lastest monster movies, "Godzilla Minus One" didn't make fun of all the collateral victims which die in great numbers during Godzilla's mindless rampages. However, in Legendary's MonsterVerse we are supposed to cheer for the monsters while we are munching popcorn. But in this movie we can be sad and afraid for the humans who will loose their lives.

The attack on Ginza is the only time I'd ever been AFRAID of Godzilla's classic theme. Sure, it's just the same song recorded w better equipment, but the scene it's played over makes it feel SO different. The previous movies used it as a "Hell yea, the KING IS BACK!" sort of moment (Heisei) or a god marching to war (Monsterverse). This? This is wrath. A warcry millions of years old, bolstered by humanity's tampering with nature; this Godzilla isn't going to war. He IS war. The song isn't just a song anymore, it's different. Darker. A hymn to the God of Destruction.

It’s the theme being used the way it was originally intended when Ifukube first wrote it for King Kong vs Godzilla and Mothra vs Godzilla, where the monster king was, unambiguously, the bad guy. Something to be feared. Same with the ships during the third act when we hear the Godzilla March. The main title for the 1954 film was originally a melody for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, before it sort of became Godzilla’s main theme just by association, being used in later films as his actual main theme, starting in Terror of Mechagodzilla. So Naoki Sato really went all out with using the classic motifs for their original intended purpose.

The director said in an interview that when Akiko gets sleepy, she gets cranky and cries, so the filming centered around Akiko. (I think the video has been uploaded to KZfaq) In other words, if I spend time with Akiko at the filming location and she starts to feel bad, I prepare to shoot and shoot. Everyone I have talked to has pretty much the same reaction to that scene. Everyone is hyped at first. Everyone is excited to see how "cool" the new Atomic Breath is. Everyone thinks they are about to experience a classic Godzilla trademark. ... Then they, and everyone else in the theater, just goes dead silent. All that hype instantly gets replaced with horror l and realization at the sheer scale of devastation. And what is REALLY impressive is that it made the audience mimic the people on-screen who are too awe-struck to move. Everyone just stands there, unable to step away knowing rapid, swift death is approaching them and there is nothing they can do to stop it.

This movie uses various symbolic techniques. For example, Godzilla, who causes overwhelming destruction and fear, is a symbol of war itself, and defeating Godzilla means that those involved in the war are truly ending the war in their own minds. Also, Godzilla's heat rays that emit Cherenkov light are a symbol of nuclear weapons. Furthermore, the fighter plane that Shikishima rides at the end, Shinden, is shaped like a Zero fighter just reversed. This symbolizes the opposite of a kamikaze attack where you die 100%, that is, it is a fighter plane for survival. (This movie was made by the same director who made ``Eternal Zero.'') ``Shikishima'' is a phrase referring to ``Yamato, Japan'' in Japanese waka poetry, and it symbolizes Japan itself. It may not be well understood by people overseas, but in the minds of many Japanese people over a certain age, the war is actually not over yet. In this context, the heroine's question to Shikishima in the final scene, "Is your war finally over?" has a deep and heavy meaning. And... When I first saw this movie, I had some doubts about everyone saluting the crumbling Godzilla. If Godzilla is just a monster, there is no reason for people to salute it. However, when we interpret Godzilla as a symbol of war itself, it means that the war has ended after the sacrifice of countless human lives, and even the death of a single unknown soldier is by no means meaningless. I was able to resolve this question by inferring that the film director was arguing that we should act with respect towards all those who died in war. The reason why this movie is not just a monster panic movie, but an excellent movie in the truest sense of the word, is because these many symbols intertwine in a multilayered structure and ask us various questions. As a side note, The bruise on the surviving heroine's neck in the final scene can certainly be seen as a prelude to a sequel, but I want to interpret it is a symbol of the never-healing wound caused by nuclear weapons.

I am very happy that you, as a Japanese, have such a deep understanding of this film. You are a wonderful person to understand. I also believe that this film is not just a monster panic film, but a film about the horrors of war and hope for the future. I remember when I saw this movie in the cinema, the scene of Godzilla's heat rays and the black rain that followed gave me a sense of despair. Normally I would be excited for Godzilla to go on a rampage as soon as possible, but I repeatedly cried out in my mind, “Please stop it ....... However, Godzilla is an enemy to be defeated, but at the same time he is a victim of nuclear weapons. I pray that through this movie, war and nuclear weapons will be eliminated, even if only a little. Anyway, this movie was really a great movie. By the way, there is also a black and white movie version available on Amazon prime, which I also recommend.

@@user-jd5ig9xd3s Actually, there was one thing I forgot to mention. After the heroine is blown away by the blast, there is a cut that shows Godzilla's back view. Don't you think that there is an indescribable sadness in the back view of Godzilla? Godzilla is deeply saddened by something. After that, Godzilla makes a unique roar, and the main character also lets out a speechless roar that resonates with Godzilla's roar. It is clear that the main character's roar comes from the deep sadness and intense anger of losing her beloved. By juxtaposing the two roars, I think the film director is claiming that Godzilla's roar is the same as the main character's roar. I have written before that Godzilla is a symbol of war, but the war symbolized by Godzilla is not simply an object to be abhorred, but rather a war that arises from the deep, unavoidable nature of human beings, even though no one actively wished for. The director seems to be suggesting that this should be interpreted as the worst kind of disaster, a fate deeply embedded in the very fabric of human existence. Godzilla's cry is the sum total of Shikishima's cries that have been repeated by many people countless times throughout the war. I would like to add this after receiving a good reply. I would also like to apologize on his behalf that Google Translate did not work well.

During the movie, the news casters who were giving live coverage of Godzilla's attack are a homage to the first Godzilla movie, but the live recordings they risked their lives for were later used as loudspeakers to summon Godzilla, so their deaths were not in vain. I love Shikishima's character arch: a failed kamikaze pilot returned home in disgrace, everyone dumps everything on him and he feels the extreme weight of his shame, meets Noriko and Akiko and starts taking care of them (while still dealing with the shame), and finally regains his honor and his life in the final confrontation (and shows what a fearless fighter pilot he really was!) and comes home with a real reason to live; Noriko and Akiko (who was soooo adorable, btw!) Like Shin Godzilla, ToHo brings Godzilla back to what he originally was: an enemy of Man. a mindless creature bent on senseless destruction; a metaphor for war itself, and for Godzilla; the threat of nuclear war. I thought Shin Godzilla was the scariest incarnation of him since the original, but I'm mistaken, THIS is clearly the scariest incarnation of Godzilla! maybe half the size of Shin as well as Legendary, but the power of his ranged attack... worse than anything else ever done! and for all the awards and nominations the film has made worldwide, it was because Godzilla strolled up, pointed to the production team, and looked menacingly at the ones who makes the decisions.

@kingscorpion, I fully agree with your assessment of this truly magnificent movie. Godzilla should be scary, and we should not eat popcorn and cheer for monsters which kills thousands of people on their mindless rampages. But just that happens all the time in Legendary's MonsterVerse. However, I beg to differ as far as "Shin Godzilla" is concerned. I think that the movie is overrated. I found it boring and emotionally uninspiriert, and it's younger incarnation is perfectly ridiculous. It looks like a gigantic rubber toy for kids.

Imagine the dreadful atmosphere of Chernobyl, the haunting ambience of The Lighthouse, the electrifying strings of Oppenheimer, the dominantly low brass of Batman v Superman, the rumbling electronics of Dune and the religioso choirs of Man of Steel. You get the music of Godzilla Minus One. The music is very ominous, creepy and intense. The air horns sounds like the threat of danger looming among humans, slowly creeping up. But what I also liked was that the other half of the music is also rather hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric at times. There is a certain tenderness, somberness, warmth and hopefulness blooming along with all of the chaos happening. Like a sense of despite all of the bleakness, there is a resolve and a will to survive. I’ve heard the soundtrack countless times now and I never get bored. Of course, the film wouldn’t be complete without the famous Godzilla theme. I love the fact that there are 3 versions of them and you can tell the differences between them while still being roughly the same. The version that plays when they’re having their final confrontation with Godzilla is my favorite of the 3 themes. That one is about as classic as it could get.

I think the black spot on her neck is supposed to be where her skin is being affected by the radiation. When the atomic bombs were dropped, the survivors often had their skin become almost a tree bark texture. It’s actually one of the design philosophies that make Godzilla unique, because he also has that condition. My head cannon is that even though Godzilla is “dead”, his havoc is going to extend on for generations, similar to how the bombs themselves still to this day, have an impact on the culture of Japan.

mattragel san Your reaction As a Godzilla fan, I thought it was very justified. You understand that the theme of this film is the salvation of the soul. It made a lot of sense that your imagination would evolve to Biollante when you saw the last scene. You also understand very well that the main character in "Shin Godzilla" is the Japanese government. By the way,There is a theme here that many reactors don't talk about. That is, "Why would Godzilla attack Tokyo (and not the U.S.)?" There is a theory that "the spirits of Japanese soldiers who died in the WW2 come back as Godzilla." I don't think it applies to -1.0, because Godjira hates people too much. "The living souls of the Japanese who could not die in war brought Godzilla back" This makes sense to me. In other words, maybe Godzilla is an illusion created by those who returned alive? But the actual Japanese people at that time were more serious. Because they were forced to overcome PTSD from the war on their own, without Godjira. Look up "Construction of Kurobe No. 4 Dam." There you will find proof of the challenge of the postwar people.

G vs Destroyah is my favorite with Junior stealing the show. Saw Minus One three times, all IMAX. The attack on Ginza was scary. The classic Ifukube theme never sounded better. Can't wait for a 4k releases. Toho has a huge, well deserved hit.

Possibly the best minute-for-minute Godzilla film since GMK, maybe even the original film. The characters, the narrative, the music, Godzilla himself, this movie is cinema perfection. I'm ao glad I saw it in theaters, and I was able to take some friends who aren't G-Fans and they loved it.

I saw it ten times in the theatre I thought it was that good, and everyone I brought each time liked it, some even saw it twice with me. As much as I love this movie, I'd be fine if there wasn't a sequel, but I would certainly be open to it as long as the director, and cast comes back. The director said that he would like to try to make a serious movie where Godzilla fights another monster as he feels it hasn't really been done yet, and while I would rather it be a Godzilla solo sequel I'm not opposed to that. What I do NOT want however is Noriko's neck thing to make her mutate into a creature or giant monster for Godzilla to fight, that would really piss me off, and be so stupid giving the serious/grounded setup of this movie. I'm curious for a sequel since I thought this movie was so good, but I also know it could either enhance this movie, or taint it which concerns me.

At the beginning, when my man Shikishima was in the plane, Godzilla looked at him straight on and growled softly. It gave him a warning, not to shoot. This Godzilla is not an animal. It’s smart, it thinks, he understood what a machine gun from a plane is. This Godzilla is looking to cause harm.

I just finished watching it. it was awesome. brought tears to my eyes several times. i could relate to the main character on human level. much much better than hollywood crap. now this is how you make a story everyone can relate to. they deserved the oscar. and i hear they made it for 15 million dollars while craps like aquaman has budget of 204 million. the main difference is that i could not feel emotionally connected to any hollywood super heroes. while this shikishima character looks very real. the story felt real. i think that's the distinction here. hollywood is out of touch from human emotions accept the joker movie in recent times.

It's amazing how this film gets you to like, and worry about, the human characters, where in most Godzilla films, they are often basically filler for plot exposition. I could actually watch a film about them and their post-war struggles with Godzilla not even in it. I also like how Godzilla is made a terrifying enemy again, and, even though he is the size of the original 1954 version, at about 150 feet, he still feels enormous because Japan in the 40's didn't have tall skyscrapers, so his relative height to the city is impressive. I'd even say that a 350 to 400 foot Godzilla would look comically large, such it would look stupid in the architecturally shorter environment.

I'm Japanese and I'm not good at English, but after watching your video I learned that the Americans who used nuclear bombs are the most ignorant people in the world about nuclear weapons. Shikishima was exposed to black rain due to the huge explosion caused by the beam of light released by Godzilla. Because black rain contains large amounts of radioactivity, people who are directly exposed to this rain suffer from acute radiation injuries such as hair loss, heavy bleeding from the gums, bloody stools, and massive hematemesis caused by acute leukemia. Noriko was infected with Godzilla cells, but Shikishima's life was also in danger. Godzilla killed 30,000 people, but this number is likely to be much higher. That's what this story is about.

Nice & emotional reactions. Not much I can say about "Godzilla: Minus One" that hasn't already been said. It's a masterpiece in film making & story telling. I looked through all your videos & noticed you haven't done reaction videos while playing the following PS4 games... "Shadow Of The Colossus" "The Last Guardian". These games are often referred to as art (although I consider any video game a form of art) & certainly qualify as a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Just have some tissue near by this time if you play them. :)
