I think that Frieren used a curse on Fern. During the episode "smell like trouble" they explain that the attacks from curses can't be detected by mages, or their mana. And that's what Fern describes here.

What a batch of episodes to react to, this specific part of the story is almost like a four hour movie😂 Yep, the end of Crawl Space was jaw-dropping. Everything clicking into place in the WORST way was so beautifully done. “No reputable vendor would….. I’ll be right back.” I have to point out how much I appreciate your style of reaction. It’s so annoying when reactors pause to get their thoughts out, then their question is answered by the next sentence.
