There are three interpretations to this scene, according to TvTropes: 1) "Godzilla being tormented by those memories rather than cherishing them. One of the few moments I felt bad for Godzilla. You could tell he didn't want to kill Shindo, but from the moment Shindo nodded yes, that was pretty much his way of telling Godzilla "Do it". Godzilla now resumed his destruction, not only with anger, but now with sadness and guilt in his heart.

Regret is the most destroying feeling a person can endure in their life. The thought of leaving someone behind, even when you had no choice or means to help them, can slowly eat away over the years and can just put a hole in your heart and soul.

What a brilliant scene. I've never read this as some romantic gesture of mutual respect, mainly because I don't think Heisei Godzilla feels right being anthropomorphized that much. Rather, I believe the shared flashback reflects upon a moment that, while romanticized by Shindo his whole life, was simply a particularly painful memory to the once dying animal, now reborn as an avenging avatar of destruction. And as he looks upon his former savior, Mr Shindo understands that the sight of his face must bring it only memories of pain from a bygone time; the furthest thing from the bright future it once brought him. Because Shindo *understands* - he understands that Godzilla is a tragic figure, he understands that the only thing that will give this monster pause is not romantic human nostalgia, but pain. Throughout the entire Heisei series, Godzilla only ever directly acknowledged one human being. Perhaps the one human who ever understood, and was willing to accept Godzilla for what it truly is: *our fault.*

Once I realized the meaning of this scene, it became my favorite scene of any Godzilla movie. It shows that even monsters as big and as scary as Godzilla have some bit of heart in them

I've always believed Godzilla thought humans abandoned him to the confusion and pain of the bomb tests. This just confirms it. Probably one of my favorite G-moments in the Heisei era, right along with how Godzilla looks at Baby in GvsMGII and tries so hard NOT to scare the little guy.

I used to see Godzilla as simple animal that kills and destroys but when i get to see him much closely... He does have a human-like mind and emotions.

The two interpretations of this scene can be generalized into a comedic moment or a somber moment. Either it’s Shindo trying to reconnect with Godzilla and then despite the fitting music and Godzilla seemingly noticing him, he just subverts it by blowing him to bits. On the contrast, Shindo stays behind knowing his fate by doing so. He seeks to make amends to the creature he left behind on that island. And by that, he accepts inevitable death. And Godzilla seemingly recognizing him, hesitates. But ultimately with Shindo’s nod of acceptance, and with tears in both of their eyes. He gives a quick death to the veteran after one last roar. I prefer the somber interpretation

This is such a great emotional scene... although I can kind of see why some people think it was supposed to be funny. It's probably because they don't notice the little visual cues that indicate that Godzilla is feeling sadness and respect for the man, so they think it is a bit of dark humor, with the man mistakenly believing they're having some big emotional moment only for Godzilla to apathetically vaporize him.

This scene alone is the reason why the Heisei series is the best.

I hate to depress everyone who's ever watching but something tragic has happened the actor Yoshio Tsuchiya who played as Mr. Shindo has passed away at the age of 90 it's indeed a deep hurtful loss it makes this scene incredibly difficult to even watch it's almost as if Godzilla himself is saddened by it as well, we've lost two great actors in the Godzilla series the other was obviously infact Harou Nakajima who's death made all of our hearts sink like never before it even makes Gojira's death in 1954 all the more tragic than it already had to be both shall be missed without a doubt.

This scene is so powerful just the connection between Shindo and Godzilla and how sad it is after so many decades after WWII and the guilt and sorrow Shindo wishes to be purged of for leaving the dinosaur to die for saving him and his soldiers and the tears in Godzilla's eyes as he saw this as the only human he trusted and care for.

Such a powerful scene. I feel Mike Dougherty influenced from this scene when he was shooting Ken Watanabe & Godzilla's Goodbye Old Friend scene in KOTM.

despite having a mediocre box office, this is probably one of the most powerful scenes of all of godzilla films, and it's hard not to tear up

I saved you and your fellow warriors, you had let me die in peace on my home knowing I fought my last breath protecting you. I the last of the Godzillasaurus' was thankful for that. Then I was reborn, you turned me from the last of my kind to the first but unlike others you've come to own up to your mistake and for that I will grant you a quick death... Goodbye, old friend.

I wish there had been a similar scene involving King Ghidorah and the Futurians. Ghidorah was the true victim in this case; his dorat incarnation loved his owners as a puppy would, unlike the Godzillasaurus who was only protecting his territory. The futurians betrayed a childlike creature which truly loved them, and I think they deserved to be destroyed by it.

This is possibly one of the deepest, most provocative scenes I've ever watched in a Godzilla movie...

Somewhere, deep inside Godzilla, there was a creature that remembered Shindo....but only for a brief moment. The nuclear weapons that birthed Godzilla also completed the transition from wild prehistoric creature to a horrible force of nature. That's why he obliterated Shindo. If this was King Kong, he'd probably have a little more sentiment. Especially if Shindo was a woman.

This is by far the greatest Godzilla film ever I feel. This scene is so powerful and symbolic on many levels.

I believe that this scene was one of the very rare moments in which 'we' see Godzilla in an emotional state. And I've even read that Yoshio Tsuchiya, who has said in an interview many years ago that the role Shindo was one of his favorites.

Whether you enjoy it for it's ballsy b-movie fun or surprisingly emotional and well acted moment from the Commander, this movie is genius. I'm always impressed by just how much they express in this scene. His regret, the guilt he's carried with him all these years, and the empire he built around him to make his country great, to try and chase away those feelings... And then realising it's fleeting. Wealth can't erase that shame he feels. Shown best without a word. Major props to that actor.

Godzilla's finest moment. No weapons can seriously stop him, but the emotion charged gaze of a single frail human can. This floors me every time I see it. Just before he melted down in Destroyah, Godzilla probably flashed back and remembered Mr. Shindo.

Godzilla's intelligence is comparable to that of a mammal's, Like a dog, or a cat, maybe even a primate. At least emotional intelligence.

i love how open to interpretation this is, you can read it many ways and they won't necessarily be incorrect.

Godzilla, A being of pure destructive Godlike-power and unstoppable Malevolent rage. Humanity resents such a being with frightfulness and violence. Never knowing the true feeling of bitterness and abandonment, the constant need to be fighting just to breath. Resented by beings that could've fill the loneliness in his soul, and to never find peace in a world where everything is out to destroy him and to call such a place a home. And ultimately saving the entire earth to thankless and selfish beings, always escaping back to the sea with screams of hate and intention for his destruction.

This is the saddest scene in the godzilla series, its even more sad then the ending to the original Godzilla film.

The fact people think there’s a “connection” here is hilarious. The point is that Godzilla is ambivalent to humans and their suffering.

Shindo: No, no...I don't believe I even tried...and I can't bear to live with all this guilt that's been plaguing me. Please... Godzilla:......well......if that's really what you want... Shindo: Yes....I deserve it. Godzilla: Well, okay...*roars*...Can't promise "quick and painless", I'm afraid.

Thats got to be the most brutal way to say FUCK You to anyone in movie history.

You can see the emotions and the thought process going through godzillas head remembering the events that had happened prior, feeling remorse yet betrayal struggling to decide what to do.

Godzilla remembered Shindo and knew that he wanted death, he didn't want to do it, but he was also consumed by his anger for humans and he chose to grant Shindo's wish.

Genuinely one of the best scenes in the series, and one of my favourite scenes in Japanese cinema as a whole. Shindo stares at his saviour, the most tortured soul on the planet. Godzilla sees this man, and realizes just who he is. The two exchange a gesture of mutual respect. Then, the Sacred Beast of The Apocalypse grants Shindo one last wish; destroy the city of vanity, along with its creator. Genuinely incredible. You can see Godzilla’s mind so well in this scene.

Amazing that this scene alone has more heart and soul and emotion that all of the Hollywood movies put together. Beautiful score and a fantastic film overall.

People say he is delusional but godzilla took the time to stop and even remember. If he was just an animal or force of nature he would of plowed through.

Shindo was a really brave man. His gratitude for Godzilla saving his life as well as lives of his men was re payed with the very same dinosaur now destroying the city he worked so hard to built. Not only does he blame himself for the city's destruction, but he was also willing to take responsibility for it. While Godzilla is the one destroying the city, Shindo saw himself as the one truly to blame. He died an honorable man. Naive yes, but honorable none the less. Few men who make mistakes are willing to admit to their failures, so Shindo decided to confront his past, yet he knew he could do nothing to stop a creature that would one day takes humanity's place at the top of the food chain, so he decided to end it. Not by taking his own life, but accept death by facing it.

Unironically one of my all time favorite movie scenes ever. It was the moment that made 4 year old me realize Godzilla was NOT a simple minded animal.

What really makes this scene so great is it reveals to the audience that godzilla thinks his actions are justified for what mankind did when they invaded lagos. allot of people misunderstand this scene, godzilla isnt crying out of having to kill shindo. but from the memory and the pain of what he went through. godzilla believes that shindo was essentially the head alpha of the troops that shot him on the beach. and when he confronts him again in this scene he breaks down and cries. When junior dies they set up his scene similar to the godzilsaurus scene here. Thats why in destroyah godzilla breaks into tears again, hes not just upset at the possibility of his son dying, but being forced to watch someone else close to him to be in the same limp dying state he once was on lagos.

It’s a shame the old Soldier has to fall in the Building. 1:13 along with some of these perfect Dinosaur Sculptures. The 1 with the single Horn is a Centrosaurus or Monoclonius. The one in the middle is probably a Tyrannosaurus rex AKA T.Rex & the final one with the crest is a Parasaurolophus.

I love that moment of recognition. Not only from Shindo-sama, but also Godzilla. The big, scaly guy didn't want to kill his human savior, but Shindo non-verbally said "I want this." Godzilla roars in remorse before nuking the poor veteran.

Hey, at least Godzilla just instantly incinerated him. He didn’t get injured horribly from the building collapsing and die a painful death or anything. Such an interesting scene, seeing Godzilla reflect on the past like this. Combine this with Godzilla overpowering Miki’s mind in Godzilla vs Biollante and it’s safe to say they wanted to display Heisei Godzilla as having strong intelligence and emotion.

I know so many people that see that scene as him thinking that Godzilla won't hurt him and being wrong. I never saw it as that, I always felt it was him saying to an old war buddy, "Thank you, I've had a good life because of what you did. I'm ready to go now," and Godzilla giving him what he wanted.

He is a force of nature, a force of destruction. Humanity made him that way and he can't help but be what he is. Shindo knew this and decided to let him be the way he is, he decided to deliver the coup de grace to his old savior.

I honestly wish the Heisei era kinda focused more on Godzilla having these brief moments with some of the human cast, especially with Miki as it seems that around GvMG2, they slowly started to humanize him into a anti hero.

you can tell that he didn't want to do it, that brief hesitation shows that he still remembers him, and the fact that he actually nods back at him before shedding a tear just shows that heiseigoji has more character in him than any other godzilla that came after him

I believe the allegory here is that Shindo used his second chance at life to become an ultra capitalist, even going as far as to build a nuclear submarine. Had he used his chance after Lagos to help the world, this wouldn’t have happened.

when people don't realize Godzilla king of the monsters legendary scene in the modern day is something of an homage to this scene only slightly reversed. Godzilla gave his life for humanity and in the future a single human gave his life for Godzilla

When I was a kid watching this, this scene kept me up at night. I was too young to focus on the plot beyond ‘big monsters do the fight’ but there was something so terrifying about the idea that Godzilla knew who you were and wanted you dead on a personal level. Glad we got to see more of that in Minus One.

I watched this scene, farted, then went about my day.

I think the reason why it took this long for Gojira to kill him was because he offered him a chance to live or at the very least a head start. This looked like the one time he didn't want to kill anyone.

I think Mr SHINDO wanted die with honor in the war because many of his friends died in there. Godzilla is the incarnation or metaphor of his friends that he let died.

In general, Heisei King Ghidorah tends to be evaluated as weak, but it is actually quite strong because it drives Godzilla into control. And he's not a space monster, but a gentle pet of the future
