I was hitting the 4th string with my thumb instead of my index finger. I realized this during slow playthrough. I'm used to covering top 3 strings with my thumb, so I'm struggling with that a bit. But I reckon that wouldn't make a big difference. Your lessons are amazing! Thank you!

This was a wonderful lesson. Well taught. I have always loved this sound. As noted, the riff itself is quite simple, but it's exactly as you say -- the percussive rhythm carries the day. Whether I'm playing it or just listening to it, my head, neck, chest, hips, and feet all start slipping into the rhythm. It's irresistable. Burnside and other "simple" organic musicians display a type of genius when they develop stuff like this. Yes, the percussive clicking of the fingernails brighten and amplify the sound compared to the two-finger plucking. I use that "strumming" technique a lot in country and country blues, but those tend not to have the more syncopated bass lines like this hill country blues. Also, I have tended not to dampen and cut off the treble strings yet there are so many songs, like this one, where it helps express the mood and message. The bass syncopation here continually builds quick moments of tension that immediately get a spitbath of resolution before it all happens again. And that tension is amplified with the bend on the first beat. So you have this constant micro-rhythm of tension and release even within the broader tension-and-release of the song writ-large. The rotating hand/top string slap simultaneous with the back of the fingers strum/strike truly is valuable in a lot of other genres. Stephen Stills used it a lot, especially in his acoustic work. Old-time mountain clawhammer five-string banjo uses a similar technique with its top drone string and then the other strings. This lesson was so well-done. Very clear teaching and very respectful to the originator of the technique.

Fantastic lesson! People not familiar with hill country blues have no idea how much is involved in the picking hand technique on this stuff. I have watched many lessons to get this stuff down and overall this is the best one I've seen. A great combination of visuals, tabs, camera angles, and explanation of the picking. Goin' Down South is such a great song as well! Cheers!

Great lesson, you can also shuffle it like in that live clip from the juke joint its arguably cooler. I cant really help but swing the index finger more than I have to. Its one part of RL sound. The other part which is actually trickier is the muting, I still make mistakes there even after years!

This lesson actually made me do more. Pick up my guitar more. As the titel says : "addictive"....😉 Me, as a beginner, this isn't the most easy one. But doable. Showed it to my teach and he's figuring it out, so he can teach me more about this style. But honoustly mate. You do a great job explaining it, in just simple words. Not in difficult words or terminology, just understandable for anyone. And that's great!! Well, i saved your channel, so i can learn more from you. TY for teaching us! But for now i'm sort of silent/busy with this one 😉👍

That bent note at the 5th fret is what I think of as the African 2rd -- as I understand it, many scales in African music divide the octave into 5 tones, which lands one of them midway between the major 3rd & minor 3rd tones of the 7-tone European octave. In Western music, the 3rd is the tone that determines whether a chord/scale major or minor. By bending slightly, it's possible to land the pitch midway between the major and minor 3rds, effectively playing midway between a major key and a minor key. You hear this ambiguous pitch in a lot of Delta and Hill Country blues tunes.

The backstroke opens tons of strumming rhythms! Particularly for hill country and bluesy stuff, e.g., Leadbelly & Fred McDowell super-fast chord scratching, John Lee Hooker boogie, and even some Spider John Koerner! I come back to this lesson when I lose the feel and this always tunes me back up! BTW, could you teach Leadbelly Gallis Pole and some Fred McDowell (e.g., Baby Please Don't Go - leave out the slide part, teach melody and picking)? More great rhythmic playing!!

Strumming backhand is tricky for me. I was hitting the backs of my pinky and ring finger, soon blisters and abrasion started. Not a big deal if you stop, go back and really look at the technique to correct it. Go slow with turning the key and it will keep improving. I think the groove is great when it almost just plays itself without thinking. 👍👍👍👍👍
