Early on the lady made a point about speaking Indo and not Mandarin. No doubt this harks back to the military dictatorships of Suharto and Sukarno when the chinese language was banned, because the Chinese backed the communist party in the civil war and they lost. When I went to Jakarta in 1991 it was probably the only country in SE Asia where poor chinese were common. I went to visit an English friend who lived there and on the plane in I was asked if I had any chinese books because they were banned. We went to chinatown to see a chinese friend of his. Chinatown was not even on the maps of Jakarta, like it didn't exist. We were the only two europeans I saw all night. Fascinating times.

Well, if you're going for that Mandarin experience - I'll suggest that you should go to Medan and Pontianak instead for it. Well, since the Chinese of Jakarta and the locals who live inside the Chinese Quarter seems to speak Indonesian more than Chinese due to history. Quite a bloody one, really - IIRC.
