I’m 20 and decided to go grey in the beginning of this year because I was tired of colouring it😢, my grey hair started during 16’s at that time I was very conscious about them, I felt very bad when people pointed them people still point out them but I don’t care anymore because it is the way i am.

I am 57 and have made the decision to go cold turkey. I made the mistake of shaving off my hair to do this process three years ago and it was too much of a shock and I clearly wasn’t ready. So now my hair is longer but black with box dye, I’m finally ready to do this. I’ve matured and feel ready because as you do eloquently said, the dye process is ridiculous, expensive and frustrating. So here goes …….

September ‘21 was last time I dyed my hair. The constant dying made my shoulder length wavy hair dry, brittle and broken off. I thought the sorry state of my hair was due to aging. I hated the demarcation line and got a foil done. It looked nice for a few weeks but the bleach made a bad situation much worse. So I went to a really nice lady barber in town and asked her to just cut it it all off. Yes, it was really short and there was still a little brown left but it was so wonderful to have that horrid mess off of my head. As my hair grew back in I discovered my hair was thick, shiny, healthy and NOT FRIZZY! My life had been a constant search for the magical shampoo and conditioner that would heal my hair. I never found it because you can’t fix fried hair. I kept getting it trimmed until all the dye was gone and I found I liked having it really short and got a lot of compliments on it. Well, I’m growing the short style out and that’s a challenge in itself, but it’s a wonderful freedom not to be dying it all the time. I love feeling how smooth my hair is now and I would never consider dying it again. Everybody’s hair is different but NOT dying it can only be beneficial and you might be pleasantly surprised to see what your hair is really like!

I think that gray hair yellowing is perfect because it makes it look blonde or as if a person has had blonde streaks put in. Leave your hair color alone and just let it do it's natural thing, and that includes using only natural hair products on it. You look like Dianne Keaton, lol.

That is so great to hear, and I'm so glad the younger generation is looking into going gray as a positive thing! When I was 19 in the 1980s, gray hair was considered something that was only for old people and that you'd want to cover immediately. Things are definitely changing in the right direction! 🙂

I had dark brunette colored hair and started my grey hair transition in March 2020 during lockdowns. There were so many of us running in the park with our roots showing and even while wearing masks, we'd give each other an encouraging smile. That helped a lot. I did not try to fade out my color so I didn't have the brassy roots; I got creative with headbands and, after 4 months, just surrendered to the way it looked. I'm almost 3 years in and I love my hair. During those years of coloring, I had lost a lot of hair, especially in my crown area. That's where I applied root touchup dyes in addition to my monthly salon appointments. The powders that I applied to my part left my hair feeling "icky" and always dirty. Like yourself, I kept my hair long and the healthy new growth encouraged me. I want to encourage you to try to stick to it; at least until you reach your desired length. Good luck and thanks so much Katie!

Went cold turkey. Had my hairdresser bleach out my dark dyed mid length hair. Did it 2x over the course of a year. It was a little shocking but gradually got used to it. Then Covid hit and couldn't see my stylist for 1.5 yrs. All the greys finally melded and now no more dark roots except underneath, mostly in the back. My hair gets conplimented all the time. Best decision I've ever made.

I just came back from getting a hair trim today. I'm 15 months in and very white and have the really dark. I'm half and half now. 😃 I'm so glad I didn't go for stripping out the color to fade it. I just am going cold turkey and while there is a demarcation I'm half way done. I cut my hair in a long bob and pull the front pieces back with bobby pins. It cuts the demarcation line and it's getting better. I have used the purple shampoo twice. I don't see much if any yellowing. The hairstylist was commenting how very healthy my hair was and new growth sticking up all over. I'm not updating my profile pics until the full growout.

I am going grey. Two years ago I had the box dye taken out and I was toned blonde. I didn't like it. I let my hair grow out for 8 months and in a moment of weakness, I dyed the back of my head dark brown. Leaving grey in front Now I realize that was a mistake. So, growing it out again. Not touching it until it is fully grown out!

I basically did the same although my grow out wasn’t as long. I was growing out my greys which I love. I have been dyeing my hair for close to 40 years and just after breakage from bleach decided to go cold turkey, my hair was short and uneven and not in good health. So thought perfect opportunity to bin the dye. But silly me I did use a smoky grey box dye on the coloured bits to try and blend the dyed hair with my darker slightly grey regrowth at the back of my head. I totally forgot that it possibly was a 20 or 30 volume it lifted my hair to a hideous orangish colour. And me trying to fix it I ended up stuffing up. So long story I have to start again. Luckily I didn’t colour the front or the top part and sides so that still is fresh silver grey regrowth. I’ve hidden my colouring utensils away and hoping I stick with it. Only about 2 weeks in but I will stay committed.

Thanks for the update, you look fabulous! I did a salon transition 4 years ago and played around with temporary direct dye products to maintain & tone. I'd been a lifelong long haired brunette with home dyed roots and not only enjoyed my full day at the salon but loved being a purpley/grey/blonde for a few years. No regrets but advice if you dye transition, stay away from pro toning and diy kits with developer after the initial bleach & tone. 2 part dyes are magical but they 'lift' & damage new silver growth. Temporary direct dyes only!

Talking of make up when transitioning I would love a mascara that's not brown or black or brown black. Maybe not a grey one but something lighter. I think benefit do a grey eyebrow pencil which is good but the mascara needs to be less dark too.

This video was very helpful to me as I am growing my gray out a second time. I stopped dyeing my hair a few years ago and after about 2 years all the dye was gone. I kept it that way for about a year and then last year I dyed it again because I was starting a new job. I quit the job 3 months ago and stopped dyeing again. I got impatient and decided to try to agressively fade the dark brown dye with vitamin C and dandruff shampoo, and now the brown parts have an orange undertone I really hate. It's not that bad and I have actually gotten compliments on it but I still hate it. I am considering getting blue shampoo but I am afraid of permanently staining the gray. Seeing your results was encouraging, I may try it if the orange undertones get worse with time.

its worth it just for the healthy hair alone. im platinum in my profile pic, i chose to cut the dyed platinum out slowly. i must update it with my new White,silver and grey. i have salt n pepper at the back.large chunks of white at front.its nice having a natural wave again. for me healthy feeling hair wins over color any day. my hairdresser put some silver foils in a section between the white sections and the salt n pepper so they blended better. she nailed it.

I am so glad I stumbled across your channel. I tried transitioning before and backed out. I use box dye that is supposed to wash out in 28 washes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. The bottom half is always darker. I forgot what my actual hair color is by now but I know it is darker (mixed with gray, of course) With your tips and gritting my teeth through the transition, I hope to get through this. My hair is chin length, so possible trims to keep it that length and growing out some layers, maybe I’ll make it. Thank you for the tips, because I’ll be following you to keep my courage up. I have such breakage now, and am hoping I can keep it healthy. My mom and her dad had the most beautiful white hair. I don’t think I inherited that 😮 as I have a lot of breakage and lose a ton of hair while washing . Your hair is beautiful!

My box dye looked great & covered well. I am lucky to have very healthy hair and recently chose to let my greys grow out. I don't know why people feel bad about trips to the salon for coverage during their grey transition. I personally hate the demarcation line, think it's terribly unattractive and looks unkempt, on me. I have natural dark brown/black hair. Deciding to grow out my grey and not dye my roots was step one, step two was cutting my hair, and step three is bleaching out the box dye and fading in a nice gray/ platinum. There's nothing wrong with wanting to do this to look and feel your best.
@KatieGoesPlatinum
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
Definitely nothing wrong with that - as i said on the video, you have to do what’s best for you! ❤️. For me, it was cold turkey because my hair was terribly damaged. For others, they prefer bleaching and doing gray blending at the salon. There’s not a one size fits all method.

It looks great although sometimes brassy but the brassy blonde against the silver is better than the brown against the silver. My stylist uses a toner every 5 wks when it is trimmed. I am happy I went with the bleaching. I am 4.5 months in and the silver is growing. I have a curly bob

Seven months into my going gray and getting a shag haircut has worked for me since most of my silvers are in the front of my face so they are mostly covered. Since Covid I was only dying the front half part of my head so I thought that my whole head would look the same. I was wrong. I am white in the front. Have considered dying the brown ends to black bc my hubby disapproves of a crazy color 💜💙🩷but I think it defeats the process of going all natural. Good to know I have options tho. I was a few months behind you and you were my talisman Katie! Every time I felt down, I'd watch your progress and it'd get me back on track. I started with very long dyed brown hair. For me, the dyed parts really didn't fade or go brassy at all and all I'd used my whole life was an at home L'Oreal dye. What would I do different if I were to do it all over again? I'd do a very hard cut right away, something stylish. When I finally did do that at 1.5 years in, it felt SO GOOD. Even with half still brown, just a nice style with bouncier and healthier hair made me feel absolutely amazing!! The entire process was for me, a lesson in vanity and it taught me to embrace my age and my wrinkles. I'm almost 55 now, my hair is back to the length it was and it's very healthy and shiny (a little too shiny in photos lol!). Another thing I'd change is I would take more photo's of progress. I hate selfies and unfortunately I just don't have a good number of pictures. I would also, if I could go back, have put streaks in my hair 2 years prior to lighten it up. Thanks for posting your progress it was very inspiring for me :)

Decided to go gray. Grew out 2 inches. Found very expensive salon in Manhattan to match the growth. Spent over $1k, 18 hours train travel, 11 hours in the salon chair. Loved it!!! Told me not to wash it for 28 days…found out why…all washed out in the very first washing! Gave salon chance to fix it…more $$ to go back to Manhattan. Turns out only interested in charging me more $$ to fix! Sued…found out if you don’t have anything in writing when you go to a salon you’re sh*t out of luck (and lost more $$ going through that process and having to travel yet again to Manhattan). Ended up growing it all out naturally. Could have saved lots of $$ and aggravation, never mind the time spent. BTW - That all happened in 2016. I absolutely love my “calico” - gray on top, very brown with blonde streaks underneath…it’s down to my butt cheeks and I’m 62!

Hi Kati. Wondering if you or any other women you know encountered a more oily scalp early on transitioning to grey. My scalp is flakey in spots but hair on top of my head separates like I haven't washed it for days. I have always had oily skin and so when my I got my hair colored even though the color bothered my scalp, once the process was over say the next day, things balanced out. I am just hoping it is the initial transition and it goes away. Only entering week 5. I like you had a couple good color days and then the greys popped through at my temples and at the root. I was so tired of chasing the greys, I finally had enough.❤

Hi! I didn’t have that issue, but I bet you’re not alone. I looked it up online and couldn’t get any answers. I’m hoping, for your sake, that maybe this is just temporary as your scalp adjusts? Have you tried using Prose products? You can go to their website and take a quiz and they help formulate the perfect shampoo for your individual needs. It might be worth looking into. Good luck!

What do you think of Matrix Brass Off shampoo and conditioner? I stopped dying my hair medium brunette December 12th of last year. I had dyed my hair for 18 years. My hair now is really brassy. I can get the Matrix Brass Off locally.

For me, I skew towards masks, as shampoos aren't the final product before you rinse (plus are drying!), and conditioners don't spend a lot of its time processing the color onto the hair. When my hair was more brassy/reddish, I used Matrix Total Results Brass Off mask which is blue, and now more of my natural silvers are coming in, I've switched to So Silver Color Obsessed which is this groovy greenish-grey, which cancels subtler warm tones and brings out silvers.

I’m 17 months in, I would say that if I could do it again I would have waited before cutting my hair super short. In a fit of frustration at 7 months I cut my hair from shoulder length to a very short, layered bob (like earlobe length). The haircut was not flattering and it really limited my styling options. Unless you’re opting for a pixie, I would say you don’t need a major chop in the first year, at least if you would be going significantly shorter. If you’re used to longer hair, I say keep it longer in the first year just to keep your styling options open. ETA: I’m doing a cold turkey grow out 🦃🙂

The 7 month uglies and frustration are real (!!!!). There ought to be a witty name for months 6-8 so women will know it will suck when they hit it but also that they will get through it. I think months 6-8 are when women freak out and re-dye or freak out and chop off their hair. I almost re-dyed mine but my daughter talked me out of it and I'm SO glad she did!

@@jenjen2824 that is SO true! That 6-8 month period was the only time I thought about throwing in the towel, I felt like I had been letting my hair grow for so long and yet had so little to show for it. I wondered if it was worth it. I’m glad I stuck it out, but those months were rough! There should be a name for that period, the 7 month uglies is good and very accurate!

Coloring the ends all sorts of fun colors sounds like a good idea. I might have to go to a salon and see what the stylist thinks would be a good idea as I do still have a lot of old dye sitting on my ends

I have been dying my hair for years. But about 4 yrs ago I switched from highlights to semipermanent which is pretty permanent. I have to go.about every 10 wks. It's time to go again and I'm curious how much gray I have so I think I will skip next time to see. My hair grows super slow so growing out will be a very long process. I already keep my hair just above my shoulders. I think my biggest concern is my gray turning yellow. I have hair that I have blow dry and straighten. I have a 9 yr old who swims and we are out in the sun a lot. And I don't want to go through all th headache of growing it out for it to be yellow🤷

Hi, Sonja - it might not go yellow (not everyone is prone to it). There are things you can do to prevent it while swimming - the best defense is simply to wet your hair before going in the pool, but applying a little QuickSilverHair oil to your hair first can help!

I’m in the process of going gray. I don’t want to do anything to it; I.e. strip it, cut it, etc. it’s pretty dark at the ends. So I’m glad I came across your video because I will keep it that color as it grows. It’s very long. And I have a long way to go, but I only have one, issue… my hair is naturally curly/frizzy. I straighten it in the winter. I use the instyler. I used to use a Chi also. But now, just the instyler… so should I just stop straightening my hair all together? 🤔

Personally, I think curly haired people have a much easier time of it as the greys just blend in so nice! I have straight hair myself so can't advise on this subject.

You might want to look into getting a hot tool (like the Dyson AirWrap) that can go to a much lower temperature and always use heat protectant. That should help!

She would still color her bottom part dark?! Instead of even it all out while at the hair dressers?! That dont make sense to me...if they were really good professional hair stylush they would had just turned the bottom part gray too!

If you have dark brunette hair, that's not a very good option most of the time (unless your hair is VERY healthy and coarse). For those of us with fine brunette hair, all that bleaching that you have to do to get the hair light enough to "dye" gray can either damage the hair severely or cause the gray toners to turn your bleached ends a sickly greenish brown. Not attractive.
