Back in May 2011 .....I had to go through chemo and lost all my shoulder length hair. When my hair grew back I decided to never color it again and was so grateful I stuck by my decision but kept the style short. I decided in 2019 to grow out my layers and bangs and my hair is past my shoulders and streaks of grey in my brown hair. I love it!! I usually don't follow trends but I embraced my graying hair and have taken good care of it nutritionally and with the right products. God has been so good to me... I just turned 70 and I see my gray as the wisdom I was given through it all✝️

I'm one of the ones that has strong, heathy hair and had my hair bleached/toned grey in one go at the salon. I went in as a brunette and 3 hours later walked out with grey hair. It did have a little yellow it in for a while, but I wear my hair short and after one or two cuts, that yellowish tint was gone. I wanted to go grey, but I knew I couldn't ever go through the months of two-toned grow out that would happen. If I was going to go grey, this was how I had to do it and I'm so glad I did. It didn't damage my hair in any way and now, two years later my natural silver hair is really pretty. I get so many complements on it. This process worked for me and was absolutely the right way for me to go grey.

Just made the decision recently to grow out the color. Fortunately, Im coloring blonde and gray/white blends well. I am not keen on all the dye colors for transitioning...just barrel thru naturally and get regular trims & stylish. Eventually gray/white will take over. (White meaning silver too) Style, make up shades, regular skin care & subtle jewellery are enough. Beauty & radiance comes from the heart! Tks for yr advice and yr hair is perfect for you...💐

After watching your video I made the decision to rid my hair of the dyed blonde colour and then grow it longer . One step at a time but nothing drastic . Your the ONLY sensible video Ive found and addressed those videos of DIY using other alternatives beside bleach I had just seen tonight. Whats really sad about this reality is that I have long hair with decades of permanant Boxed hair color dark to blackish dye on it. Thinking about going gray now seems impossible because I will NOT cut my hair any more.

The DIY, has truly made me very very sad for women that have ruined their hair so I just couldn’t not say what it does. So just grow it out. Go cold turkey. I have seen some beautiful transitions of women who had dark hair and just refreshed their ends but it looked like a reverse ombré. Check Jonie’s out: katiegoesplatinum.com/jonies-silver-revolution/

I have been fully transitionned for 3 years now. I had shoulder lenght dyed red hair when I started. I promised myself I wouldn’t cut it short but 6 months in I couldn’t stand my hair anymore so I had my hairdresser cut it short but just enough to remove the dyed part. I was aware it wasn’t the best cut but I felt so relieved once it was done and I haven’t regretted it once. My gray hair is cool colored and the remaining dye was turning into a warm orange. It was driving me crazy. Plus I was actively job hunting and I felt I didn’t look professional with the 2 colors in my hair. As you say in your video, I made a choice and for me the color was more important than the lenght.
@QuickSilverHair

The reds seem to be the absolutely hardest to deal with. But we kind of knew that while dyeing it or at least I did because I dyed it more frequently all over to compensate for the coppery faded color it would get. Congrats on embracing your silvers. ❤️

A week ago I went to a stylist as a brunette with my gray roots that I have died dark over the last years and wanted to go grey. I didn't knew anything about the process. The stylist explained to me that she would have to bleach ist first for several times over a long period of time. She told me I would be at first probably copper, then yellow. In the end she told me, that she has to refuse to do it, because I have beautiful hair but too fine, and they would probably break in the end. So now I will grow it out naturally. I'm really glad she was honest with me and that she insisted that I would think carefully about it.

I tried getting champagne highlights to blend. Big mistake. My fine,straight , thin hair was too fragile. All the highlights broke off. Big mistake. Now I’m on the path of chemical free living. Hair looks just fine. I ditched heat appliances and cut my hair shorter than it’s been since I was a child. Crazy but I like it better. I’m also doing a low spend year so it fits my new lifestyle. Simple, minimal, chemical free. Love it.

I decided 3 plus years ago to go grey, I did it all natural, it’s long I just trimmed along the way, I’m finally done. I tone every 6 months maybe longer, I do it professionally. It was difficult at first, after 3 months I got over it, and just went with it. Absolutely your hair texture changes, I have curly hair and live in Florida I leave it curly a lot, again natural, I use live in conditioner, maybe a gel if the humidity is really bad. I do find that different colors do not flatter me anymore. Same here beige I can’t not wear at all. Good advice, ladies stick to your guns , best decision I ever made was to stop dying my hair.

I couldnt believe I grew out my dye for 9 months and my stubborn outer layer of blonde hair concealed it all. I did shag my hair out 6 weeks ago and was able to finally see all the lovely silver hair under my blonde. Yes, its shorter now but this is what I needed since I was suffering through multiple colors and NO pay off. My hair is growing very quickly after no dye for about 11 months. I love it.

I prefer silver jewelry because it goes better with light colored skin. Gold really only looked good on me back when I maintained a year-round tan from the tanning bed, and I only did that because I was modeling at the time (mostly swimwear, so the tan was very necessary). I WISH I hadn't, though, because my very thin, almost translucent skin, which looked great and turned a slightly olive brown color in my teens and 20s also WRINKLES like crepe paper at the age I am now, due to UV light damage!

You are the only person I've yet encountered who realizes that temporary color leaves a permanent residue. During the pandemic I decided to use only temporary color (6 washes type) and now I cannot get the faded residue out of my hair. I want to let my hair go white but the faded orange was so dreadful that I tried a DYI of lemon juice, which fried sections of my hair and had to be cut off. After that I tried Color oops. This did not damage my hair (although I think it works because of citric acid) and it did fade the orange to yellow. [Sigh] So now I have white hair terminating in pale yellow (which is ghastly on my cool skin) and dark ash brown hair underneath in the back. To add to the misery, I have thinning hair in the front (and have for many years now) and my hair is both very fine and prone to frizzy and/or obstinate waves in some places while remaining bone straight in others. I think I will use a purple conditioner, cut my hair a bit shorter (it's short already) and simply tough it out. But dyes of any kind are out of the question. I am jealous of my sister who had blonde hair; she has never dyed her hair and it simply transitioned to silver without any noticeable change. My medium-dark ash brown hair has been a struggle since I started getting grays at 29. I am now 62.

I decided to not dye my hair anymore during Covid, and I also wanted to grow my bangs out. I bought several different colored hair visors from Joanne Fabrics. They have a foam bill and a spiral cord to attach to both ends to keep the visor on your my head, and they are inexpensive and super lightweight. It kept my ever-growing-longer bangs out of my face, and I felt cooler without my hair hanging in my face or on my neck. They went with all my outfits. I even like wearing them now, because it’s hot in SWFlorida!

Thank you for your great tips!! First I have to say that you are very pretty and your hair is as well! I have very thin hair and colored it blonde most of my life. I'm a young 73! Lol. I stopped coloring my hair about five months ago. I've always have had short hair. I had another cut and I can see my grey coming through but I still have blonde in it. I know I'm going to be impatient with this process but I've decided to go cold turkey. I don't know why I hadn't gone grey sooner . I think I will like it but I want silver hair. Thank you for sharing your tips because I had been researching di'ys to hurry the process. I'm a cool tone as well ! Thank you!!!!

Thank you! At five months I did some gray blending with double low lights and I actually wish I hadn’t done it because it didn’t affect my hair enough to make a true difference and it was expensive. I'm new to your channel and am excited to have found you. 😊 I had hip length curly hair when I developed allergies to hair coloring and many preservatives, chemicals and even some natural ingredients commonly found in hair care and skin care products. So I found myself 'forced' into letting my gray grow in. The first thing I did was cut the length and donated it. Now it was about shoulder length. I simply wore it in a bun or knot atop my head, or wore a baseball cap or kerchief till it grew enough to cut off more length. By the third haircut, it was shaped and I had about 1-2" left of the dk brown/blackish color left. It looked lije had it done on purpose. Pretty cool. I've now been gray for about 9 years and being post menopausal, I've found my hair is much finer, thinner and frizzier, even a little wirier.. being so allergic to so many products, I'm hoping your videos might direct me to products that will work for my hair without triggering my allergies.

Hi! I’m glad you found me. And I hope I can be helpful to you as it sounds like you have had a terrible time with allergies. I suffer from many food, chemical, medicinal, and environmental allergies as well. So much of what I discuss is what I can use safely. I have a post in fragrance-free products which is a good place to start with allergies I hope you find it useful. quicksilverhair.com/great-fragrance-free-hair-care-products/

@@QuickSilverHair thank you for the link. I have used a few of those products in the past. I had to give up using jessicurl because I was allergic to the preservative used in the product. The desert essence I have used previously. It wasn't too bad. I've also tried using the vanicream products but my hair felt super dry, like straw, and the gel was like clear glue. Lol. I haven't tried fragfree because of it's preservatives. I currently have the Lus Products but haven't had the opportunity to really give them a chance yet. I will also say that it also contains an ingredient on my allergy/skin irritants list. But it's very low on the list of ingredients so I'm hoping it won't be sufficient to give me a reaction. One thing the allergist did explain is that repeated use of the same products can, over time, cause the sensitization and eventually an allergic reaction. So, I have an inordinate amount of hair care products that I'm constantly rotating so as to avoid sensitization. I just wish they made my hair more manageable. I'm fortunate that my spouse is not allergic to anything. So if it irritates my skin/scalp, he can make use of the product. Sorry this is so long but wanted give you an idea of the struggle and frustration. I will enjoy going over your videos and will hopefully find tips etc to calm my long frizzy locks. I truly love my gray. I just wish I could get them to look as healthy, shiny smooth and beautiful as yours.❤

I had super healthy hair when I started my gray transition, because I was using a dye without ammonia or peroxide (no developer). I had a great stylist give me highlights, but my fine hair cannot handle any bleach (olaplex and K18 were not enough). It took months to cause damage, but I ended up with a chemical hair cut. Also, it immediately went brassy. Shoulda just gone cold turkey and used blue conditioning masks on my ends.

I was born a brunette but got all over highlights in my 40’s to camouflage my grays. It did damage my fine hair, so I decided to grow out my natural salt and pepper. People don’t even notice that I’m growing out my gray because of the existing highlights, so it’s pretty painless. I am keeping a very short bob while I’m transitioning, like one of the suggestions, and will start growing it longer when it’s all my natural color. I have a lot of new growth without the processing, and my hair is thicker, so it’s exciting 😊

Great tips Joli. I’m so glad I was scared to bleach the color out of my hair when I decided to go natural. When my stylists warned me of the risk of a ‘chemical cut’, whether I prepped with Olaplex or not, that was it - no thank you! Because I went cold turkey and my dyed hair was very close to my natural ‘pepper’ I only ever had two colors on my head - my old dye and my natural salt & pepper. Thank you for sharing the risks of the bleach-to-silver transition that makes it appear we can snap our fingers and have beautiful silver hair - there is the rare case that works out fine, but the majority of people I’ve encountered who’ve done it regret it. It’s not a fast transition, I cut mine to my chin and it took 18 months, but now that I’m 6 years down the road it’s almost to my butt and it’s all colored by Mother Nature. It’s the best hair decision I ever made.

This was sooo good‼️ Wish I had seen this a year n half ago😞 Especially the part about beauty supplies 😢 They talked me into a toner that was supposed to help with some yellowing that was bothering me... Which it did help... They just did not tell me it would stain, eventually the yellow would come back. And basically I was starting over after a year n half grow out😢‼️ Thankfully there is not a big drastic color difference. But I can see it when I come it up‼️ But, I will continue on‼️😁 To close to give up ‼️

I lost well over half of my very thick hair after losing weight on a keto diet. I was using Hairprint for about 7 years after becoming allergic to every other hair dye. ( I started greying at age 15, am 67 now.) My intuition also was telling me to stop dyeing. After 3 months I have 2 inches of silver roots & shoulder length dark brown hair. Thankfully i am seeing new hair growth & becoming creative in not emphasizing the severe color demarcation. I'm trying to look at it as a fun challenge & not stress about it.

Wish I learned this years ago when I'd stopped using box dye 2-bottle demi-permanent and had switched to single-bottle semis: I was under the misapprehension that I was no longer lifting my hair (probably my mild dyeing results were due to gray resistance, although I did love that my natural dimensional streaks were preserved). This delayed my transitioning, as I was afraid that using Color Oops would reveal what I was sure was several years' worth of gray underneath: at the time, I was unable to find an answer online as to what my results would be, and I was too chicken🐔to go gray all at once (not knowing that only brassiness awaited me). Definitely now know better about what you said re: how one's hair is *permanently altered* with any type of non-direct dye. (Nothing against Color Oops: it did help kickstart my transition by removing the old color, for which I got impatient and later used silver box dye without following the instructions by bleaching to Level 10 first). Thank you for correcting the bad advice out there!🐤

I’ve fallen into the ‘cut it now!’ Club, starting about 7 months in. And unfortunately it became a obsessive compulsive cutting free for all. It just never seemed to look right! I think I’m past the worst of it although I can’t say I’m happy about the way it looks. The only good thing is that I know now about where I need to let it grow out to before I go to my stylist to give me a conservative trim to remove my old highlights. I also learned that chin length hair is just not my thing no matter what the color!

I know exactly what you’re going through Cheryl. I cut my mid-back hair to my chin to speed my transition, and it worked, I was done in about 18 months. One of those products helps to balance the pH of your scalp as mine is dry. Hi Carolyn, There are horrible diy recipes for trying to remove your dye, one of the main ones is mixing dandruff shampoo with things like vitamin C pills. I have just seen people strip the moisture from their hair with this and it cannot actually remove hair dye, it just fades it to a horrible orange color. What you are using for your regular scalp and hair care should be just fine. Best of luck on your journey to your natural silvers.

I was down to putting henna on my hair a few times a year and only washing my hair when I would apply it. I did use a temp color now and then (I hardly ever wash it so it would last a long time for me) as well. I finally decided to ditch it all. I don't wash it and don't put anything on it. I have very long hair and it is blending decently so far. Everyone is shocked when I they find out I don't wash my hair ever. I think because I started washing is way less many years ago the change was not drastic and now my hair and scalp is totally adjusted. I went from washing every couple of weeks to every couple of months to a few times a year to never. I has been 2.5 years since washing at all and I am loving the freedom. Just use a wide toothed comb to keep it nice and a boar bristle brush now and then (very carefully) to get all the grime off it. I am loving the gray. I feel like I have earned it.:-)

But it was not an overnight thing. So I get it. The boar bristle brush was lifesaver in the beginning and I would also massaged my scalp every night. Those helped. 🙂

That would be exactly the best way to go about getting that brassy look out. Had I known what to ask for at a salon I would have done the same. Because I was growing out dark red hair it was difficult to deal with the copper. I called so many places and even sat for three hours at an Ulta salon and ended up with green hair. You can go cold turkey grow out with long hair it is just a matter of embracing it throughout the process. Some people refresh the dark part to keep it from fading and getting brassy. You can do gray blending but I ONLY recommend it if your hair is healthy, it can handle bleaching processes, and you can afford it it can be very expensive initially and then maintaining the toning throughout your grow out. With really long hair you can expect it to take four to five years to fully transition. So cutting off as much as you can will get you there faster. I opted for the cut and then the grow out. It is a pick your battle situation. But do what makes you most comfortable. If you chose the blending route make sure the colorist you choose KNOWS how to do the gray processing. Ho, I’ve just decided not to dye my hair anymore. Listening to all your advices, I realized that’s I have in my stash two pack of hair color stripping that I was afraid to use and thankfully I didn’t. I have also two semipermanent color boxes that I will toss. Respect the clothes and makeup I have never think that they have to match my hair color with them, so I wouldn’t give away any for that reason 😂. I think those decisions as you say are desperate measures that we take in that transition. I don’t know how I will feel because I’m just beginning so I hope to be strong and to reach it. I was also intrigued of the nine months you mentioned because everyone says that we have to wait two loooong years to achieve the desire change, can I ask what you meant with that please? Hi Maria, welcome to the silver side. May I suggest, instead of trashing your dye, donate your box dyes to a women’s shelter, they sometimes need it. I've been getting my hair dyed red for almost 40 years and I'm just sick and tired of it. I went to a high-end salon and the colorist suggested doing the transition over a six-month time span; however, it would have been very costly, so I decided against that option. I've continued to dye my hair red. Then I did the burgundy hair dye, which is very different for me, as I usually stay within the auburn red zone. I'm having fun with this color. I still want to go grey, though. I bought some very high-end, expensive grey/silver wigs and love the way those colors look on me. I think I will start letting the grey come in naturally, then wear the wigs when I feel the transition gets to the dreadful state. If I decide to go for the big chop, then at least I will have these beautiful wigs to wear to grow out the grey and length. Thank you for your videos.

Sounds like a good plan. Red transition is difficult, and in my opinion, one of the harder to deal with because it turns so brassy. I was using permanent red, for a long time I was using the darkest color in the line and then I shifted two shades down…I think that helped with it not being so drastic. One thing that helped me was blue shampoo and regular deep conditioning. I even did hot oil treatments to tone down the brass. Best of luck and I am sure it will be gorgeous.

You know what I discovered, quite by accident? If you bleach your hair platinum blonde and then want it to be dark again, you can just wash it with that Just For Men shampoo that slowly darkens your hair with each wash. The catch is that, because you've bleached your hair platinum blonde, you realize that the color that gradually darkens NORMAL (unbleached) hair in that shampoo is ACTUALLY a dark bluish/purple (if you're familiar with paints, it actually looks Prussian Blue). SOOOOOOOO, only wash it with that shampoo until you've gotten it to the bluish/purple hair you like it. If you keep washing it with that shampoo, it'll just get darker and darker and bluer/purpler! It does look kinda cool, though!
@QuickSilverHair

That is absolutely fascinating. I had no idea it was blue. Thanks for sharing. I may offer that up as a solution. Is it a specific shampoo, are there different colors?
@Hatchatorium
@Hatchatorium Жыл бұрын
@@QuickSilverHair Any of those Just For Men shampoos that 'gradually' wash away grey hair will do it. All it is, is that that color which NORMALLY attaches itself to the outside of the cuticle, INSTANTLY DYES hair that has been treated (especially bleached) because, as you know, when you bleach your hair, you open the cuticles up, so the dye in those shampoos attaches itself WITH A VENGEANCE to your bleached/treated hair. I discovered this completely by accident, and on the first wash, it turned my hair sort of that faux grey color that has become popular as of late. But if you keep washing that bleached hair with open cuticles with it, it'll get darker and darker, and eventually it'll turn a dark bluish purple (which looked cool for a while, but I got tired of it after a while... I'm a guy, but I'm also a musician and visual artist, so I've been dying my hair since I was in my early teens... and now I'm 55! lol)

Are express gloss and toners at hair salons a safe option to cover the yellow cast to grey hair? I haven’t dyed my hair since my early 20’s. I am now growing my hair long for the first time in my later years. My worry with the express gloss and toner is that it will leave a demarcation line with new growth. Hi Donna, it really depends on the formula of the gloss and how your hair grabs it or not. Low porosity hair, it likely will wash out faster than it would in higher porosity hair. The real question is what is causing your yellowing? If you can stop the yellowing or remove it then you won’t need a gloss. You can also ask your stylist to do a test section with the gloss and see how long it last and if it helps to neutralize the yellowing. Here is my post on yellowing and their causes, maybe that will help. quicksilverhair.com/why-does-grey-hair-turn-yellow/

Luckily I only use semi permanent color so it won't be as painful to grow out as someone who uses permanent.

. Just stop dyeing you hair. Get an inch or so cut off every 6 weeks and do this for a year. Boom! Hair dye is gone and you now have all natural hair color. I did it in my 50's and never looked back.

That is the easiest route if your hair grows pretty fast. I wish more would embrace this route. But everyone has to grow their own way.
