Going off the Grid Ep 9 - We have our Cabin Slab!

You learn patience when trying to build in the Tropics over the wet season. We have waited 5 months to get our Shed House (Cabin sized) foundation and slab work carried out. The land has a gradual slope on it and we decided to "cut and fill" rather than build up the land which would have been very expensive. Unfortunately when the cut and fill was done, it did not have enough of a gradient to allow for drainage, hence water remained on the pad and made it impossible to work on. In recent weeks we have had enough good weather to allow some work. First we drained away the water, then removed the sloppy clay, then we added gravel. Finally the concrete slab was made. The Slab has drilled piers to aid in strength and stability. Aside from that, we set in additional rain water tanks, completed odd jobs and bought a bigger tractor!
Our Shed house or Cabin is small being 8m x 6m with a 3m x 8m verandah. We are downsizing from a 5 bedroom house to a single bedroom shed home. It's quite a transition for us. The Kids have moved on now and we are looking forward to building on our of grid adventure in the Beautiful Atherton Tablelands!
The Spider was unharmed and relocated but I think it was just as shocked as I was!
See you next time and thanks for watching!
Regards
Scott

I was watching my neighbours taking down a tree that looks like teak, smells like teak, but has to be taken out when it gets dark as chopping down teak is illegal here. Bloody big rope near the top connected to a tractor in the dried out rice paddy and a rather drunk gentleman with a chainsaw going at the base like a beaver. Amazing Thailand. Like the new tractor, there must be millions of Kubota's here and they seem to go forever even without the full service history (there is no translation for that ;-) ). Glad you've got your slab down so you can crack on!

Mate you need to get yourself an excavator, doesn't matter if you haven't operated one before, your a smart guy , you'll learn fast. You can't even comprehend how useful it be for you right now. Machinery holds it's value well high now, you could buy a second hand machine and sell it for the same price when your finished with minimal improvements.

I nearly bought a small one a few weeks back. The guy wouldn't return my messages until after I bought the tractor. I agree with you. I'm happy to buy a machine and use it, then sell it later. However, money is tight now until we sell our house.

Careful tractors are like saws once you start, the collection just gets bigger. Making progress Scott. 👍🏻 The spider reminded me of when I was driving up through Queensland when the girl I was with suddenly ended up on my lap waving her arms and pointing, while I was doing a 100 kph…. Bloody great spider had come out from under the seat run up the door pillar and was sat under the sun visor. I pull over asap and help the thing out with a shovel I had in the car. 🫣 Have to love Oz All the best from a cold wet UK 🇬🇧

When I was living in FNQ I was driving to an appointment and the sun sprang into view, I casually reached up to block it with the sun visor and a Huntsman spider about that size dropped onto my lap, thankfully I was only doing 110 kmph with a road train on my tail. My wife who was in the car, refused me permission to burn it to the ground. Oh how I wanted too. The road train driver must still be shaking his head, as he flat spotted 18 tyres to avoid turning me into speed bump. Oh and good progress may the weather give you a decent run to get well into the build.

Always good to see your videos, Scott! Clever technique machining the radius on your travel stop. I'm chomping at the bit working through projects to get this current house rental ready, so I can start on our "Forever Property." Good news is, the longer it takes, the more ideas you give me! All the best, Andrew Thiessen

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious I'd like to pick your brain about filming bigger, highly-detailed projects like the catwalk and stairs I just built. Six week build and didn't film any of it because well, it already took six weeks! I couldn't fathom stretching it out by filming. But I know that's EXACTLY the sort of unique, high-end project I should make videos about. Stuck between a rock & a hard place. Best, Drew

Great update Scott. Just think of all the new skills you are learning. By the time you move into you new home you are going to know how to do everything. The new tractor looks like it will be a big help. Good luck with all future projects. Thanks for the video.

You should think about a counter weight for the back of of your new tractor if you’re going to do a lot of loader work it will help balance your tractor get the job easier and be easier on you and your tractor.I’ve seen all kinds a simple wooden box to metal boxes to used barrels with sand , rocks or cement. Just make your three point hitch pick it up a carry it . Thanks for sharing

Agreed. The Slasher works for now but the whole rig is 6.5 m long when attached. Cheers.

Depending on how much loader work you’re going to do you could add fluid and or weights to your rear tires. Yes it’s a pain doing loader work with a big old bush hog hanging on the back of your tractor. Glad to see you guys got your slab poured. Thanks for sharing

Hey Scott Congratulations on getting the slab finished, I know you've been waiting for the weather to clear up. You've got a beautiful piece of property. Moving out into the country or (outback), I can see the need for his and her tractors, LOL Your new tractor will sure come in handy with the 4 in 1 bucket on the loader and the rotary cutter. At first, I thought you got into a nest of hornets in the ground and I'm glad that wasn't the case, but that spider sure was huge. Looking forward to future videos when you get started on the house.

Tip/recommendation for a future rainy day - reinforce your trenching shovel with a little rebar or angle iron. #nowelder and have snapped 3 (from Bunnings), all in torrential downpours when I needed the most! 4th shovel is a charm.... 🙏

I'm thinking that Yanmar has already paid for its refit by now and you'll only get more and more out of it. Excellent little machine. The Kubota will do a LOT of work too. Both are great machines. Spare a thought for those of us who only have a 15hp ride-on and 44 gallon drum cut in half as our "tractor-trailer" rigs lol It's odd to notice some differences in setups like you have. Where I live the council requires tanks to be on a slab (although hardly anyone does it) and also containers flush on a slab (again nobody does it and the container supply companies I've dealt with suggest having them semi-raised to prevent condensation under the floor). That was just a little old huntsman. Wait until you run into one the bird-eating ones! lol. When you start a garden and get some chooks is when you know you've moved in. It's coming along nicely! Keep it up.

I'll have to sell the Yanmar to pay for other things down the track but you're right. It's paid for its self with the work its done. The Shipping container will sit on solid concrete blocks, about 150mm of the ground. I made the pads for. stable base and to get 4 points level due to the contour. Thanks again!!

Feel free to use the term one of my mates came up with for my Shed/House, he called it a Shouse 😁 I can't believe the tank delivery guy just dumped it and didn't help you position it. I had 3 25,000 lt tanks a 15,000 lt and a 8,000 lt and they always gave me a hand to position them. On another note I didn't go down the tractor path, I bought a Dingo, the largest model, and it had 3-way bucket, Post Hole digger, and a Trencher for it, the trencher was awesome when it came time to run some irrigation around the block for all of the garden beds I made from the hundreds of rocks on the block, the only issue with the Dingo was it's 250 kg lift capacity, but I managed to shove boulders up around a tonne all over the block with it. 👍

Shouse it is. The tank guy offered but I said I will sort it out later. Your Dingo would be fantastic on the property. The trencher would be awesome. Cheers!

Great video Scott.. starting to take shape... Dang Scott, what kind of spider 🕷️ was that.. reminds me of the wolf spiders we had in Fla.They were huge.. They would get as large as your open hand.. I would plant cinnamon and peppermint plants everywhere... The bugs and critters hate it... Scott you take care of yourself and be careful out there..
