Going through Raw material Stock for inspiration - looking for future Mill and Lathe projects
Amateur video work and amateur hobby machinist. Videos of me working on various projects in the workshop and around the home. Work using my Vevor MX400 Mini Lathe and Precision Matthews PM-25MV Benchtop Milling Machine.

PM Research has some cool machining projects for not much $$. Some small steam engines that require machining before assembly and also a bunch of late 1800’s miniature machine shop pieces like a shaper, drill press, lathe, etc. I’ve got 5 waiting on my shelf. Inspired by Blonde Hacks & Joe Pie

I had never heard of PM Research. Great tip. I will be looking to pick up a kit that requires a bit of machining. Need to check the inventory. Thanks

How about a set of thread savers for the lathe or a lathe saddle stop or maybe nylon V blocks for the mill or even a 1/2" thick 45 angle block all very useful.

I have a Lathe saddle stop on my list but adding the nylong vblocks. Great tip and I have plenty of nylon. Adding thread savers but I had avoided making them due to my past frustrations with my Tap set. Time to get on with it. :-) Adding all your suggestions to my list. Thanks

I made mine out of high density molecular weight plastic and i think those two black long pieces you have are HDMW.@@deezworkshop

I metioned it before, Stefan Gotteswinter has a low profile dti holder for the mill. He made the plans public and has a build vid too. Try it in ally or brass for practice, obviously steel for the final project, but it looks good, check it out👍👌🇦🇺

I just checked it out and downloaded the plans. I will think about this one. I would need to get a small dovetail cutter but I have another project in mind that I could use the dovetail cutter for as well. would be a handy tool to add to the toolbox. Thanks. Will be watching more of Stefan. I have wated some but not a lot of his videos.

i would move the nylon style stuff to a different place or under the bench. then use the bottom for steel and the next for solid and top for tube

I like this organizational idea, I will see what I can come up with.

go to the local metal supplier and ask to check out the scrap pile. you can get end cuts and such for cheap!
@deezworkshop

I did attempt this with one supplier. When I said do you ahve a scrap pile...they sort of did but the response was, "We will sell you anything you see in these buildings". :-) most of it of course was A36 steel box channel, u channel, round bar but all full lengths and nothing I could use. I did find an area they had wiht some smaller cutoffs so I grabbed a couple pieces of round bar about 2" in length and a nice 2' square sheet of 1/4 inch flat plate. I wanted that for my workbench. I think they could order me anything I want but was hoping they dealt with more brass and aluminum and free machining steels. Oh well its a source at least I can use.

Do you have a threading die holder for your tailstock. Boy, don't get rid of the aluminum cause you have a fortune of it. Where I live thats alot of money.

I actaully made one. It mounts in the tailstock using my jacobs style chuck. works great. I have a video or 2 on that one. Was a fun project and I hot blued it. So far no fust is appearing. Used it many times. I love having this aluminum stock. its messy to machine but is much easier on the tooling and most of my projects are fine in aluminum. Fortunately it is about the cheapest for me to get...at least in the random cutoff boxes I purchased in the past.

A sterling engine could be a good project. would use both your lathe and mill.

I have thought about getting one. I recently saw Joe Pies review of one. They are really cool little engines.

I am going to hang on to that piece for something down the road which would need that. I think it was nice they tossed it in my random cut off package i purchased.

I did pick one up but my taps dont havce a divot. They have a point. I could make a new pin that allows for an inverse point to use with my taps... Project on the list :-) thanks.

@@deezworkshop check the pin out, some you can flip over and it has a cone instead of a point on other end.

@@mike9500I did and its flat. I thought about putting it in the lathe and turning a cone into the flat side. I did contact the seller on amazon and they refunded me the money and said keep it. lol.
