I think the fall of AAA is a good thing. People will realize that too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup, that the big money surrounding games is exactly what is harmful to it, that it is an intellectual sector involving computer science and interaction and not a thespian sector involving acting and theater. Each can lend to and learn from the other, but they are distinct. If we get away from the consulting firms and large studio format then people with talent will find a means to create personal capital rather than corporate capital.

The triple A industry is not failing, just look at the last 3 yrs, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, FF7 Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, GOW Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Tears Of The Kingdom. @@MrSpartan993 The last 10 yrs, check the best selling games, 90 percent are triple AAA. Yes some studios have live service flops, but AAA still carries the industry. And good indie games are few, compared to the amount released every year, go on steam and thousands of sloppy indie games release every day. The indie scene has way more bad games as a percentage of total releases than AAA. Check playtime records and 90 percent is still AAA.

Where are AAA 4X, RTS, Point and click adventure, Space Sim, TBS, Farming Sim, Boomer Shooter, Detective Game, Metroidvania, 2D Platforming and etc? Let's be real AAA studios aren't going to make those kinds of games anymore with AAA scale and budget. Let them rot, indie is the future, and unlike what this guy realized, it has been that way since 2012-2015 ish time frame.

Part of the reason I subscribed was because you unveiled a larger part of the video game industry than I initially realized (companies, business, investing, economics, loss leaders, IP, etc...). We need to take the concept of Kickstarter and evolve to a new model of community investment. The core problem is with the up front money it takes; it puts a publisher, or a parent company, or some type of investor ABOVE the devs in terms of what the game is and how it is marketed. We end up PAYING for these games, and more than the cost it took to make (otherwise there would have been no profits), so there is no reason we couldn't take that money instead and invest it, leading to the potential for profits and 100% aligning the interests of players and developers. If you screw over your players, you lose your funding and fail... as you should. It also means better pay and working conditions for devs.

Your videos give me motivation to keep going, making games is super cool and all, but its more thinking about it that's exciting, actually doing it is very hard work over a long periods of time the desire fades. For me I've played games for decades and they got worse with either balancing to sell skins, pay to win, or been made by corporations for making the most money possible, so if you want something right, you got to do it yourself, a year and a half later got my first launch! I agree with everything you've said, AAA is shooting themselves in the foot and indie is the future for sure, just marketing is troublesome, If there's one way to help indies is to help promote. Your game looks sick and thanks for your content.

I've felt positive about indie games since the Xbox Live Arcade days. It's just gotten better since. Despite my never releasing a game, I have tried on & off for over a decade to make one but always ran into scope issues. The struggle of what I could make vs what I wanted to make within a certain time frame. I think one of the most powerful things that big games have lost sight of is iteration. Making sequels allows studios & indie devs alike to learn & grow with each release. I'll get back to making games again soon, but this time I'm older & wiser with better tools & an understanding of what I can make within the time I'm willing to give myself. Side note, Pepper Grinder is currently my favorite game I've played this year.

There's so much potential in gaming. Lately I've wished Game Dev's would leave big companies & group together to make passion projects. These big companies need their devs yet they take them for granted, they restrict their creativity. It's just crazy where gaming is at. I feel If you grew up in the 90's, It really felt like the future of gaming was going to be awesome. Gaming wasn't ONLY focused on graphics or the same bland cargo copy game features. Gaming should be focused on satisfying physics effects, fun movement, rag doll effects, games utilizing creative art styles, games had a range of different gameplay modes to play. Creative and fun gameplay mechanics is so much more important compared to "Realism" In my opinion I don't care about 4k resolution or Ray traced reflections, COMPARED to having satisfying damage effects, interactive environments, breakable objects, the ability to climb or play using a stealth approach. These are just random examples. It's important a game has good enemy CPU behavior so you can have fun in single player modes, or have CPU bots in offline modes. Current video games have focused way too much on nitpicking the least important aspects and forgot what parts ACTUALLY make a good game GOOD. It seems they have forgotten how much players enjoy just being able to jump in and start having fun playing a game. It seems like a bunch of game genres have been completely forgotten about.. As well as certain Art styles & certain subject matters. Old school PS1 & N64 style graphics can work, if a creative design is used. I seriously don't know why gaming had to fall into this rut that we are in..? Also: {We have seen that even if companies delay games, it isn't improving the quality of games being released. Which is a sign there is a MUCH DEEPER issue going on with modern games. No excuses, devs used to make great games with much less and they would have given anything to have certain capabilities to utilize that are available today. It just takes actual passion, focus & talent to make great games. Sidenote: It's so crazy how many people are still supporting super mega rich companies putting out unacceptable products.. i don't understand certain people. I don't understand how certain companies can be messing up so badly. It's frustrating that other passionate people are not allowed to make a version of a type of game that we used to have but no longer get anymore.. Yet these huge companies get full control over if an unused game IP gets made & they do everything they can so no other versions of a game idea will ever come out. Even if there's a huge fan base around certain ideas and there's a ton of passionate devs out there dying to make a version of a certain video game idea.. that frustrates me beyond belief}

Something AAA companies don't realize, is they're paving a rode for much smaller developer's to become even more sustainable with fair priced micro transactions. Helldivers2 is just the first sign, a smaller dev can make an amazing game, and sell some fairly priced add ons, to bolster revenue from fans that want to support them. No man's sky is a live service game with no micro transactions, but still constant updates, game changing updates!

When I was younger I used to go at least once a month to my local game store, trade in and buy a brand new game constantly….. it was like there was a never ending stream of great games ! Now I don’t even pay that much attention to what’s even coming out because nearly everything is a disappointment or broken mess . I’m always playing my Steam backlog or older games I’ve had for years giving them another run . If I buy new games, it’s very rarely AAA ….. like one if that a year, most games are early access or not made from a big dev ……. I just won’t reward big Developers with my money because they suck …… the games are mediocre and they inject real world politics into everything…… and the games never work out the box ! Clearly there are exceptions to the rule but most AAA games suck badly!

Everything hinges on independent developers, but therein also lies the predicament. Only then will we have studios with not only creativity, but the resources and manpower to make creativity the new standard in the industry.

It's the same story as the film industry and the music industry. People who like money get business degrees and go where the money is and take as much as they can legally get away. Creatives break away and create their own small Studios and when they get successful and old and tired of creating, or they hit hard times and need funding, they sell their studio to the big corp who then rides this new wave creative talent and intellectual property into the ground, and all the creatives leave and go to another small studio and the cycle repeats.

Studios are losing their rep, and that's an excellent chance for indie devs like me to bring their best foot forward and steal that big pie slice I'm not even working with my buddies, I'm literally the one and only developer working on my own game, and it's been almost 2 years since I started working on it Is it hard? Yes, yes it's hard, and my game is purely mechanics as we speak, from Crafting to Construction to Ranged, Magic and Melee Attacks, to Skills that you can level up, Quests, Shops, Inventories, Armors, Enemies being your Allies through dialogue invitations, etc, etc, etc... It's been 19 wild months since I started that thing, and there's not a single video online to show what I've been doing just yet But I've been through enough hard stuff that I know I'm not giving up now There's no environment just yet, but coding-wise, it's computationally light and will probably run on even 10-year old hardware at 30FPS (it's being built on a GTX1650 laptop. That's old and weak compared to modern systems). The goal is to make something EVERYONE can enjoy, and have its own Unique twists too (which is also why the graphics are low-poly) Whenever I feel like it's even barely ready, I'll start sharing footage online

For a long time, during the 2010s, I've stopped buying video games, as well as movies and tv shows, as well as music, because....well...much of the medium I have loved from the 1990s and early to mid 2000s....aren't as enjoyable as what I loved 20/25 years ago.....it's sad that nintendo may be the only one to stand out, but they've also are infamous for sending out DMCAs/Copyright claims for properties that they wish to emulate older games on platforms outside of their consoles, yet haven't bothered to let these games be played on their own current selling console, including Gamecube games...which really sucks because there's plethora of older games that can be enjoyed as much as those who grew up playing games before the 2010s and even the 2000s. Heck, Emulation/Retro gaming helped me get over my anger and hatred during 2013/2014, after the boston bombing, and I became a casual played from 2014 onward, with the exception of one or two video games I like to play the most (but only a couple of hours or maybe an hour or less). Either way, I wish you indies ALL the luck you can with making your own IP franchises, as I've been only interested in making franchises in terms of filmmaking, tv shows, and my favorite, music/music videos (and yes, including video games). I do hope that the same creativity, passion, and heart that's done into video games would also be the same for other types of entertainment, including movies. I've been a big music listener for 25 years, but I wish you good luck as well as other future devs out there to create their own franchises that someday will be just as popular as the mainstream Triple A (AAA) companies have done prior to the 2010s.
