Whenever I think of gaming , RTS comes in my mind first. So yeah Stormgate is something I'm really excited for. Still sad about Command And Conquer 4 butchering from EA till this day because CnC was the first game that told me Star/war Craft has a competitor other than Age of Empires.

Half-Life 3 never came because Valve needs new and innovative tech/features to bundle along with it. Each game they've made is revolutionary in some form, whether that's gameplay mechanics, storytelling, design, whatever. But what Valve doesn't get I feel is that the AAA market is so completely ruined and has been that way for so long, that Valve simply just... making a good game... would be so revolutionary on its own. Games back then used to be made with passion from all kinds of companies. Good AAAs were the norm back then, but not anymore, to the point that if we had a AAA game that was made with that same passion as back then, it'd be considered exceptionally revolutionary. We need them to show all these companies a AAA done right.

Gaming isn't dead, its just saturated. What will be interesting to see is how will it get back to what it used to be and who will make that revolutionary change coz those will be the big players of the industry in the future and it certainly won't be any AAA developer fosho.

I don't know, just looking at "gamedev twitter," the real issue seems to be that everyone is doing all the same things and making almost the same games, using all the same hashtags and using the same marketing tactics, and so on. You should do something different if you want to stand out. Don't just follow "the things that you're supposed to do" because some youtuber told you to.

Nintendo has always been openly hostile to mods. And a lot of japanese devs are somewhat also. Bethesda would never deny modding. It's what makes their games playable

It always boils down to short sighted greed. This is usually what happens when studios grow into big bloated corps. They become inefficient and slow. They get stingy but they bleed from all sides. The employee pool grows so large that they can barely move in any direction. They begin leaning on the state to prop them up which affects all of us too. Same shit different industry but they usually end up collapsing in on their own weight. There will be a major downturn which will roll the Triple A market but it will be a renaissance for the independents.

Long story short - you adjust yourself according to people and don't try to adjust people according to you

If modders would just make stuff that is original. Copypasting copyrighted IP to games is not very productive use of your time and you will get bashed by the IP holder if the stuff gets popular at all. All the actually important mods are original content. DayZ didn't have to go copy any IP. Original TeamFortress or Counter-Strike, no IP theft. Dota, no need to steal anything. Just make mods without abusing other people's IPs already. And yes, I understand why modders do such things - they are usually young and don't really see the problem especially as it *is* legal for their personal use and fun. Problems being when they start distributing it... and big companies have no option - they HAVE to protect their IP.

as a programmer i keep wondering if it even make sense to continue developing games or apps anymore. the market is overflowing. there is no lack of games. more games are out which means the chance to make a successful game and have this one unique idea or game mechanic is decreasing.

Terraria and Re-Logic are another great example of a game developer being open and communicative to the modding scene extremely well. Mod support for the game did start out as a community effort through Tmodloader, but Relogic would later begin to collaborate with the people behind TML to make it an official DLC for Steam, integrating its functionality into Steam Workshop, making it even easier to download and enjoy mods. On top of that, since Tmodloader runs off of a separate instance of the game, it's not negatively impacted by official game updates (when they inevitably happen anyway lol). They even work alongside modders themselves, giving them the resources and tools to begin the process of migrating their mods to the latest game version before releasing those builds to the public, meaning players don't have to wait for mods to be brought up to date. They're probably the best example you can find right now of a game developer interacting with their modding community in a positive way, apart from Valve and Epic anyway.

People often cite tencent involvement in LOL as negative point. The funny thing is that it is preventable, if western publisher was actually willing to publish their game.

The main problem was lack of updates. Overwatch had so much going for it and was one of the most popular games in the world. Especially that two year period with no new content at the end was so brutal… People lost interest during that period and it’s really hard to recover from that. The broken promises wouldn’t have seemed like as big of a deal if they were still releasing new content up until OW2 released. But they dropped the ball completely

The only people who think a company and its IP's is the company itself are CEO's, board members and stock owners. Everyone else realize that the employees, the human "capital" IS the company. Blizzard is dead, killed by greed and corporate management.

I have not played WoW for about 3 or more years. It got to be a lot of same stuff different area. There was a change I heard they did idk how true, you could toggle the spiders to something else. (I HATE spiders). But that's a small thing. To me it became unfun.
