I met an astrobiologist! His job was mostly disproving evidence of microfossils on Mars by replicating the 'fossil impressions' with non-organic means, with implications both in Precambrian palaeontology (studying microfossils from the age where everything was a microorganism - if the 'microfossil impression' can be made chemically without a wee bacteria then it may not be valid fossil evidence) and geology (discovering new chemical reactions that can occur in the Earth's crust, neato!). Lots of chemistry knowledge needed for astrobiology!

I'd just like to point out in my smug KZfaq commenter fashion that the corpse dummy used for Noriko's body is the same one at 18:15, just redressed. As a veteran community and low-budget theatre actress, I always appreciate maximum usage of a good (presumably expensive) prop. Ya do what ya gotta do, yanno? Also appreciate the practical effects, which are surprisingly well done. assuming the crew had enough cash for a couple of cans of flubber slime and fake blood after the plane and explosive charges ate up 90% of the budget.

This is somewhat of a firmer statement than the English 'there are limits'. It's more like: 'As human beings, there is such a thing as right and wrong.'

Going off your video, it’s interesting that they didn’t expand on the moth metaphor. It immediately made me think of the Augustinian view of evil in which “evil” itself isn’t a ‘thing’ but a corruption or privation of what is good. Moths don’t just arbitrarily go after fire, but fire plays on their adaptive instinct to towards light sources. Not that I would expect a 1960s Japanese film crew to be versed in Augustinianism, but the moth metaphor I think easily lends itself to that train of thought for anyone trying to make sense of both the human capacity for good and the capacity for evil.

"Goke" [Go-kay] is a shortened form of "Gokemidoro", chosen by Shochiku for an English audience who might have trouble reading/saying "Gokemidoro." Here, "Hell" isn't meant to be literal; Goke brings hell with it. And the Gokemidoro are most certainly body snatchers. This film isn't based on anything. There was never a "Vampire Gokemidoro" series. It started out as such (well, the project then was just titled "Gokemidoro") and then became this movie over the course of development. That's why you can't find any footage of it. That original project (and even maybe early forms of this movie) did have a giant monster in it. The hijacker's name is Teraoka. Goke/Gokemidoro is the name of the aliens, not him. The "thought slime" IS Gokemidoro. That's the aliens' true form. Sugisaku and Kazumi do not manage to kill their Gokemidoro. After they flee, Gokemidoro leaves the space biologist's body to go back into the U.F.O., which causes his body to turn to dust.
