Keanu Reeves was being interviewed by a guy who claimed to be a massive "Bill & Ted" fan when "Bill & Ted Face the Music" came out. He asked Reeves if it was difficult getting back into the role of Bill to which Reeves responded. "I play Ted." The guy stood, placed his microphone on his chair and walked off camera. "That's right," Reeves said. "You walk away." To his credit, the guy did come back and finish the interview.

What you’ve described is a movie that leans tonally, thematically, and in every other way into “prog rock is difficult to get into but rewarding once understood”, and made a whole movie about both that experience and the FEELING of that experience, how having a niche interest means being undercut not only by other around. You who don’t get it, but also by yourself for not having a more accessible interest. Not that I would know, I play D and D and it’s super popular and all of my friends love hearing about it 😊😐😑😔

When I realized the lead was Jonah Ray, I also got where a lot of this was going. I loved his stint on MST3K, but his specific vein of comedy there aligns with a lot of what you're saying here. Music was a big component, but often also music esoterica. Weird niche bands or pining about eclectic sounds. But also a lot of nerd anxiety stuff as well.

I've recommended this before but I'd love to see your take on Dia de la Bestia (dir Alex de la Iglesia, 1995), it's one of my favorite horror comedies of all time. Not gonna give away too much but it's about a mild-mannered, elderly parish priest who discovers the date of the apocalypse is mere weeks away, and comes up with a plan to thwart the devil's army from within - a plan which requires him to sin as much as possible in the limited time remaining. If that concept alone isn't enough to hook you in, I dunno. Right up there with Peter Jackson's early stuff (though nowhere near as splattery) or Cemetery Man (which I'd also highly recommend).

I don't know why I didn't smell Alex WInter all over this from the instant I saw weird sfx makeup subhumans like Vlad on the screen, but as soon as you outed his involvement, Mildread, I recognized him under Vlad's makeup. As for a review suggestion: SPOOKIES! 👻It's on Shudder as we speak! Basically Ghoulies with, like, half the charm. Or wit. It is fun, though, and has an array of puppet moisture ranging from displeasingly arid to . . . quite, *QUITE* wet . . . 😏

More positive on Destroy All Neighbors than Mildy but agree on points. All over the place tonally, not all of it landed, but I *really* liked a lot of what hit. Enjoyed it! It was bleak as shit but also fun? Jonah was exactly as annoying AND ALSO relatable as a frustrated musician whose tunnel vision fucked with his relationship with the community around him? GOOPY PUPPETS The obsessive focus on needing to finish things and express things and how annoying you can be to get there (with tiny ear canals!) I really liked the score, they did a great job on Vlad's "EDM" that came off like a strategically lo-fi version of some hotline miami fire.

Tbh every single music nerd who watches this movie will immediately recognize “all the motivations” guy. Anyone who’s tried to make a real go of slinging an instrument has either known or been that guy, or is slowly realizing they are that guy. And Winter absolutely nailed the level off over the top that Vlad needed to be in order to be a proper gateway to the film’s over the top premise. The final product feels like a sort of Cronenbergian accident involving the writer’s rooms of The State or Mr Show.

We have a suggestion for a trio of... Well, not movies, but stage productions. The Hatchetfield series from Starkid, which has a mini-series and a short film under its belt as well. The three musicals are The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes Must Die. We love the whole series, and it explores the nice niche of horror-musicals that should be far more common.

Prog rock fan here. Much of how you describe this movie can be directed at a lot of prog music as well-- throwing everything you've got at it & to hell with seeing whether it sticks or not. Prog is a lot like jazz, in a way, just (generally) much less improvisational. There's a lot going on to try to follow & not everyone's going to be up for it. The biggest problem that haunts a lot of prog is it can be pretentious & self indulgent. Complex music for complex music's sake, "Ooh look what we can do!" Check out South Side Of The Sky by Yes for an example of quality, classic prog. In the meantime, I'm going to check out this movie. Stay awesome Mildread 🤘😎
