Another thing to highlight. Their training is often times something to help people out. The milk, the fields, the construction, and so on. Roshi says they're even getting paid for it, but that's not the point. His method is teaching them to help people just as much as it is about building themselves.

Kanesennin's training is to help them surpass human limitations, without them realizing that's what happening to their bodies. Hence the weighted turtle shell. And yes Kamesennin did have a student that didn't come out great. That student was Gyumao.

Turtle Hermit Training isn’t just about strength training. It’s about normalizing helping others. Every time they deliver milk. They are helping the milk man and the milk drinker. Every plowed feild is work the farmer didn’t have to do. Every task at the construction sites got those construction workers, who probably get paid by the job. Way more jobs done. Way more roads built, way more people getting homes. Look at how good of people all the characters in the show who went through turtle hermit training became.

Yup while Crane Hermit training is the opposite which focuses on just murder or even killing innocent people but thankfully Tien and Chiaotzu eventually saw the error in that and wanted to be more like the turtle hermit people.

Strength, Endurance, Power, AND Good morals/Discipline. I love how the Turtle School represents what Martial Arts is supposed to be about in all of its aspects. Sure, it’s self empowering, but it’s also about the philosophy of being a good human being, as Roshi nailed that on the head with this arc. Since we brought up the Crane School, I think bringing in the rival school in the second World Tournament arc was genius because we can see martial arts as well from the people who abuses said power martial arts brings people. Not saying Toriyama was a philosopher or anything, but he showed he understood what martial arts is supposed to mean and how it could get twisted when he wrote the Turtle and Crane Schools.

I love how OG dragonball sometimes uses almost a philosophical approach! All these ideas still loom large in goku and krillin to this very day! Easily the most important training either of them ever did.

When I saw the first training arc I was floored that this man, who probably didn’t know about the practice, actually outlined it perfectly as if his soul knew it. RIP Akira Toriyama. While it is an anime, the emphasis on recovery cannot be understated as recovery is a cornerstone of progression in exercise science specifically when looking at strength training. So interesting they pointed out that even the best make time for recovery.

Yet they have no full rest days. They would need 2 days per week fully resting in this training scenario. 8-10h per day resting is not enough to recover if you need to get up again next morning.

Yes. Sometimes it’s difficult to feel content with resting because getting stronger is always on the mind. Recovery is important, even God took a break on the 7th day. Amen 🙏

Im very late but the first training arc of Dragonball might be a reference to an actual philosophical practice called the Vita de Contempletiva. It literally talks about working the land, studying the universe, and giving back to the community as the way to reach true enlightenment. As you work like the Creator did once before to create all this, your mindset aligns with His and you understand your place and purpose in the universe. Anime imparts real life lessons unlike western cartoons that are just silly and good/bad simple dilemmas.

The resting part is also an underrated bit, cause as much as you have to gradually increase the intensity of your training in order to get the results you want, your body also needs time to get used to the changes, hence why there is always a rest period in between stints. With the benefit of hindsight, this is why Vegeta's training was not as effective as Goku's. Vegeta is talented, but the man just keeps pounding on the intensity without ample rest, which ended up costing him cause his body was not fully prepared to adapt.

Exactly. Over a decade I had a real real workout in years and I ended having "T-Rex" arms or DOMS basically I could barely move my arms so I had to take a break for a day or two.

Sadly, Vegeta never trained with Roshi, never trained with Korrin, never drank an ultra divine water, never trained with Kami, and vegeta doesn't know how to train unlike Goku, now he can catch up to Goku with Whis training

When og goku fights the first android it literally says goku could be an alien. Also oolong also asks if goku is even human. They were referencing it from the first like 30 episodes. OH and goku not being able to tell men from women is another hint at his nonhumanness. It’s like how you see a dog and can’t tell immediately it’s gender, but dogs know either others genders just by looks. Humans know each other genders easily but an alien might have some confusion on the distinction. Sometimes I wonder if we have such pronounced gender differences like how we do because an alien runs our planet and needs the blue/pink distinction to tell us apart.

Dragon ball was the funniest and most laid back, yet also had very tense moments with general Tao and the RR Army, and others. It blended both vibes perfectly and I can rewatch Dragonball easier than DBZ. The pacing wasn’t bad either

That feather-weight jump at the end of their training got me so hyped as a kid that I tried running a couple minutes at a time on the machine then jump, rinse and repeat. Also the turtle shell training helped me get through school on that heavy-ass backpack. Easily one of the most iconic training camps ever

Excellent video! Philosophically, the Turtle Style is fascinating. The ideal of the martial high-culture of Qing dynasty China and Edo period Japan was the scholar warrior, someone who balances their destructive skills with peaceful and introspective arts like scholarship or flower arrangement. The idea being to forge a warrior into a more refined and complete person. The Turtle School follows this framework to a tee, but ditches the trappings of gentrified martial arts in favour of a blue collar approach that uses common laborer's jobs and natural hazards to increase the fighter's abilities and normal schooling to sharpen their minds. With the end result being a martial artist who can function and earn a living basically anywhere, while working their training into their trade work. In terms of the actual exercises, basically everything they're doing can be tied back into fighting skills or conventional training methods if you think about it, just dialed up to 11. For example the way they step through the sand is basically identical to a training method called mud-stepping that's meant to train you to lift your legs for kicking and stepping. And the construction work has them hauling, throwing, pushing, pulling, lifting and dumping things with a wide variety of lengths, weights and and weight distributions.

I like that Dragon Ball is showing blue collar work in a positive light here. A lot of modern media depicts blue collar workers as either uneducated or miserable because they hate their job, but that hasn’t been my experience at all. I’m “white collar” (software engineer) but I grew up surrounded by positive examples of blue collar men. My dad was a mechanic and then started his own business doing home inspections and contracting. My uncle owned a barber shop (still does). One of my grandfathers was a fire fighter, the other worked in a tire factory. My older brother became an HVAC technician. I learned a lot from them - critical thinking, perseverance, the value of hard work, how to change a tire, how to change my oil, how to build something like a deck or a swing set out of just wood and screws. The only reason I even got into software engineering in the first place is because the family computer died and I decided to see if I could resurrect it, which got me into building and fixing computers, which started me down the path of computer science. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t been taught to work with my hands or shown how to take something apart, figure out how it works, and put it back together.

I agree Master Roshi's training with Goku and Krillin was beautiful but even more beautiful was Korin's training with Goku. It taught Goku to work hard, to persevere, and not have self doubt. The Holy water was really just tap water and that didn't make Goku stronger, but it was the training with Korin that did, it was all Goku, it was his determination and his hard work that made him faster and stronger.

Master roshi left a massive impression on an isolated kid in the forest like goku. He showed him how to live and opened him to a whole another view of the world. After goku’s grandfather died he was left in the world alone. Finding the quality of friends that he’s found was such a sweet and balanced way for goku to wrap up his childhood. Dragon ball is definitely grade A material teaching many life lessons for the viewers, vicariously living through goku.

Just watched Dragon Ball for the first time and am up to the tournament so I was just laughing during the recap because the show is truly funny.

The early training was one of the best parts of DB, and it's probably the reason why i'm enjoying the "I Parry Everything" anime currently airing. Dude's legit helping people while training at the same time, just like Goku and Krillin.

Loved how all the basic principles of what we all use in training were already shown in DB. Progressive overload, training of the mind and rest. 3 basic fundamentals of any workout routine.

Say what you will about Roshi’s…tastes, but as a teacher he was definitely one of the best ones out there. He taught Goku and Krillin the value of hard work instead of just focusing exclusively on martial arts techniques, and even when their training was finished and they fought in the Tenkaichi Budokai, Roshi went in disguise and beat them as Jackie Chun so that they wouldn’t rest on their laurels and realize that they still have a lot to learn.

Unpopular opinion: I like DB more than DBZ. I loved that it was about finding Dragon Balls and kung-fu fighting. The Earth in this show was so fantastically goofy with talking dinosaurs and flying cars. It was this fun 80s sci-fi version of Chinese myth. Love it.
