Twenty years on, Channel 4’s coverage of Italian league football is remembered with great fondness.
James Richardson hosted both matchdays each Sunday and Gazetta, a magazine show which went out on Saturday mornings, which I was a proud part of.
Jonathan Grade was series editor and worked on the legendary shows throughout its time and has written a wonderful book of behind the scenes stories and recollections of the series and the era.

This show was the only way I got to watch football as a kid. We didn't have sky, so Serie A became my gateway. People ask me today why I support the Italian national team almost as much as I support England and it's 100% because of watching Football Italia in the 90s. I'm even wearing my Sampdoria shirt as I type this. Obviously I want England to win the Euros on Sunday (it's the Friday before the final at the moment) but if one team has to beat us then I'm very glad it'll be Italy. Forza Inghilterra!

Coming from a Brit… I was exactly the same … there was a time in the 90’s I was more of an Italy supporter than England lol.

@@Preeno It's why I still love Italian football and still have a love to see teams like Parma do well! When they scored a goal I used to go 'Parmalat' it was the name of their sponsor on their shirt lol

I grew up watching Italian football on channel 4. I loved the highlights on a Saturday morning then a Iive match on Sunday afternoon. I never had sky back then so I fell I'm love with Italian football thanks to channel 4.

Just found this podcast. Was the best show on TV for the time. The reporting, interviews, games and back drop were amazing. JR is still one of the best sports journalists out there. Would love to see it return....theme tune was epic!

Channel 4 used to be great for alt sports - Seria A, chess, sumo wrestling and kabaddi miss those days, thanks for sharing.

Yep, I remember watching Trans World Sport early on a weekend morning- can't remember if that was Saturday or Sunday.

Rome via Leeds. I made the trip in 1995. Ended up working with James' girlfriend of the time. To see where Italian football is now (National team excepted) is shocking. But nice to see that group of Sampdoria players bring the cup home. Once saw Viterbo play Castel di Sangro. A dull 0-0 but it didn't matter. Being back the Anglo-Italian Cup. I expect a Renaissance soon.
