Title correct, as usual of a film released in 1974, plus the excellent film quality and sound. Another film with Mr. Smoothy Roger Moore and his eye brows, and the lovely Susanna York, and the days when couples were snogging, the kisses were rather 'chaste', without the tongues flicking about like an angry Black Mamba, and eating each others faces off....:) But quite an enjoyable film to pass away nearly two hours of a bit of entertainment, and pretty much knew when the film started and the plot became known, that Moore would save the day..

Gold is a 1974 British thriller film based on the 1970 novel Gold Mine by Wilbur Smith. Peter Hunt directed this old fashioned -- if not reactionary -- action film about gold-mining in South Africa. The story concerns a nefarious scheme to control the international price of gold by sabotaging the country's largest gold mine, flooding it with an underground sea. Hurry Hirschfeld (Ray Milland) is a cranky but kind millionaire who owns the gold mine. His granddaughter, Terry Steyner (Susannah York), is a beautiful women suffering from the old ennui. She happens to be married to chief bad-guy Manfred Steyner (Bradford Dillman), who, along with unscrupulous international tycoon Farrell (John Gielgud), hatches the plot to flood Hurry's gold- mine. To the rescue comes Rod Slater (Roger Moore) and his faithful sidekick Big King (Simon Sabela), ready to right the wrongs in order to make South Africa safe. Great upload of a predictable but good film. Thanks much.

Dankie/ Merci Flick Vault for this movie. I was searching for this on the internet, this movie, for many years. The last time is saw it was in 1981 at SANLAMEER estate in Natal. I was then 10yrs old and can only remember "James Bond" going down a path of water and shouting.. At that time I didn't understand English. My Dad was there there and we had still the wine farms ... Some stuff I don't understand. The small aircraft registration is ZS-FMC. As far as I know the nr must be ZU-.... The many value is sick! To pay a devoice case R450 is NUTHING. A annul pay of R120 is like a MacDonals meal today. From a History view is fantastic. The movie is from 1973. About R1/2 = $1: R2.5 = UK Sterling 1; R1 = DM1.5 Adv. B.J Voster of the National Party was the PM and the most "evilist"-system of Apartheid was in Government policy. Un-imploment was between 3 or 5%. No Black upraising, burnings and global sactions was not inforced. 1976, 3-years after the film, there was Soweto-uprising. The Economy at that time went down. 1975 Army services for white males was a must! (in 1983 it was ALL whites males that lived in ZA) 1983, ten yrs agter the movie, the new tri-chamber constition was made law. 1985 the Chace Manhatton Bank of New York pull its many form ZA and the Johannesbrug Stock Excahance was stop for a day or so. That is also the year of Big Black Uprising and bombing of White ppl. Talks bt the Government and Nelson Mandela still in jail, started. 1988 the War in Angola- Southwast Africa was very heavy. About 23% of the budget was spend on the war. 1993, 20 yrs after the movie, a New Black Government with Nelson Mandela is in waiting. Joblessness is about 20%. 2003, Big white migration out of ZA and crime is very HIGH so also Joblessness and Laws of Black Empowerment is enforce on all business. 2013, Forty yrs after the movie, Big White migration out of ZA (the braindrain), Crime is ultra high, State Capture, and 40% of the pupulation is with out work.... It as good to hear the Afrikaans at the Airport, Jan Smuts at Johannesburg and to see the old flag and the SAA/ SAL as an Aircraft Company. And the Rand? R17 = $1; R21 = UK Sterling 1; R18 = Euro.

This is a great book written by one of the best story tellers Mr. Wilbur Smith. Unfortunately many details relaying to gold production is omited in this movie. Many details concerning work in the gold mine conditions , the ways to protect it against thefts and so on , are not shown. Too bad - it is a fascinating theme by itself.

@Andrew Wazagow. Agree. Difficult to reproduce and/or do justice in a appx 2 hour entertainment movie. Hopefully though, this fictional movie aroused enough interest that at least some people actually researched history ... even if just briefly on Google.

@@Tealcorvette Obviously you are right. Still...gold has such a grasp on humans , it would be a great thing , if somehow the efforts of Mr. Smith were not reduced to just a singular case of a plot to manipulate stock market. Seems a bit trivial. But you have a very strong point. Thank you.

My uncle was a Indiana Jones kind of guy. He built dams, dug up mammoth tusks in Alaska and dug for gold. He had quite the life. We never saw him often but he was my favourite uncle. On one of his gold expeditions someone found a cowboy hat that looked like it belonged in Hollywood and gave it to him. He had someone put tie tacks on about a 2 dozen gold nuggets and spaced them around the hat making a hat band. That hat was worth nothing until hat band was in place. No one even looked at him as he wore it everyday. Raw gold looks nothing like what is on your finger. I don't know what happened to that hat all I know is I didn't get it.

What is the differences between the old days mining in some African countries and the nowadays mining in those same countries? In the old days the mining companies were concerned in their concession and governments use to oblige them to build hospitals, schools and other infrastructure, while in these days there are clan conflicts by which mining became tribal concern where it is operated by tribes at settlements and much of the needed automated machines gone with wind and no direct concession with the government is applicable. Thus projects benefiting the mining areas got with wind gone.
