Gold pan review of the Gold Hog Flow Pan one of the many production gold pans. In this review I evaluate the speed of the gold pan, the capture rate using the most difficult material I could find. As well as the general ease of use and construction. As with most of the pan in this review series I am a complete novice with this pan, and only going by the manufacturers instructions and other youtube videos out there. As a novice I did make mistakes, and I tried to better my technique in a second attempt with the pan, but the results were almost the same in my second attempt with better technique and in a river. (where I lost my gold) Before people get made at me or insult me, I am going at this as a complete novice with this pan, and my technique will be a complete novice technique. Everyone starts at the beginning, nobody starts as an expert.

Love this idea of testing the popular pans. I found the flow pan concept one of my favorites. So I built one with the bottom catch pan being twice as deep and after experimenting with hog mat I switched to a 1/4” punch plate over miner moss. Once the gold is under the punch plate it’s not coming out Been using it this way for 2 years. Very happy with it.

I appreciate that no matter the issue with these pans, you are open and honest about what this testing is. You're not just selling some manufacturers pan, you're showing what it would be like to try to start with these pans as a novice to them, and what to expect. Sure, maybe they have different techniques etc, but the biggest majority of prospectors WOULD be novices to them. It's about what to expect just off the hop, and I'd really welcome a response from the manufacturers. I like that, "come and show me, so we can learn together."

I bought the flow pan 3 weeks ago and now I like it. I wasnt thrilled at first. It took getting used to. Dont overload it! And rotate and front to back to settle the gold. Then side to side! I have lots of heavy black sands here in vt I can run about 1/2 a bucket of classified pay b4 I clean it out and keep going.

it clearly shows in the gold hog video to stratify front to back parallel with the riffles not across the riffles also your tipping the pan to fast. i won one at a gpaa gold show [thanks Doc] and didnt like it at first either but after watching the video a few more times [slow child at play] i finally got it and it works on Washington gold even on classified concentrates

Once again, Dan, thank you for an excellent and thoughtful presentation. Just an observation and not a criticism: On both the GoldHog Flow Pan and and Pyramid Pro Pan, keeping the units level without any tilting is essential. Losses of gold increase greatly as the unit is tilted. With the FlowPan, our experience would make us believe that because it has sluice matting in the bottom, it can be used on a slope like a sluice. But I have found that not to be true. I have both and use them frequently here in Maine and the northeast, where most of our gold is fine. They both perform for me with minimal losses. However, neither is effective in a tub unless it is a very large and wide tub and, in the case of the Pyramid, a deep tub.

The flow pan is for testing purposes, so there is no worry’s about seeded dirt and losing gold you know you have in there, the reason behind docs idea was bringing that out just for sampling fast in your areas you may think have good gold, he’s fills it high and fast because he doesn’t care what falls out because it’s no seeded gold it’s just to see what may be in the dirt! It’s kinda a sluice in a pan for sampling only! I guess LoL! Love your videos Dan, in totally understand the thinking behind these segments! Thanks for sharing!

Vo-Gus Prospecting I thought up and down when doc released his first video and pushed this as a sampler, speed test, without bringing clunker stuff just the pan and move material fast, it’s definitely not intended for guaranteed set amounts of gold LoL! If anyone knows anything about prospecting equipment, anything at all, they better know this is not the pan to have a regular day at the stream, I would push this as a bulk sampler, a sluice -a- pan!

Seems like if he designed this pan to test ground for gold value that’s all the better reason to have a high capture rate, flow pan tests ground and determines its worth 10 dollars a yard based on recovery, garret super sluice tests same ground and determines its worth 40$ a yard based on recovery......just saying

Really enjoy your videos Dan! I agree that the Flow Pan is not designed to process large quantities of classified material. That being said, I bought the Flow Pan and used it extensively when I was in Alaska with amazing results. For me, the key was making sure the material was thoroughly wet (kneading the material whether classified or not), shaking and spinning while keeping the pan level, and letting the running water ripple over the mat for a few seconds before tipping the pan. I've even used the pan to scoop up materal, excavator-style, with positive outcomes! My most productivity happens when I wash the mat directly in the sluice. I seldom run more than 4 loads in the Flow Pan at a time without cleaning the mat to prevent it from clogging up. Great videos! I appreciate your authenticity and relaxing approach. Keep it up!!

I have watched Doc's video on this pan. He was using the flow of the river to wash through the ends of the pan hence less strenuous agitation. I think you may have lost gold by agitating it too roughly initially before it had time to drop to the bottom. Just saying! Nice tip about checking the pans cracks and joins- gold loves to hide! Keep 'em coming Dan.

I thought the same thing and think that it would only be needed on one side, preferably the upstream side, so you can stratify at an angle. Thinking about buying one just so I can add a sliding door and add some large expanded steel at the bottom. I don't like the jerk technique suggested, because of what happens when you jerk or surge mats in a sluice or highbanker. If someone beats me to this modification please post some results somewhere on the internet.

So Doc's method of stratifying the material was definitely different, and I do think you were clearing it faster than I would, even as a production pan. Now I have never used this kind of pan, I am a fan of a small high banker, then a blue bowl with the cons, but I would think for a pan like this, you don't need to tip it at all to clear the majority of material. Unclassified material would allow for faster gold settling due to larger rocks helping agitate the material. With the classified material, I would stratify the material at water level where the material is barely submerged, and when ready to clear, simply pulling it through the water while mostly level should be enough to clear the light materials on top. After you have cleared the first time or two, and a quick shake to keep the material agitated, you can probably get more aggressive. But I am from the south east of the US originally, and the gold in the area was definitely coarse, and flakes like yours is much less common. Hope the idea helps.

One thing I noticed was when Dan tilted the pan to let the water come out he tilted it to the upstream side as indicated by the little black tab in the opening of the side of the pan. The mat are directional, so the material was just flowing out and not getting caught like it would have if it was dumped the other way to mimics the flow of a stream. A small detail that makes the world of difference

I'm having a chuckle at comments being left by people I can't help but categorically refer to as "Pan Fans." Good video, Dan. You explained your test well enough and, having talked at length about the testing conditions and purpose of the test, there's no need for additional explication. Short of creating a controlled environment with a large cylindrical swimming pool with circulating water, there's not really a good way to test the recovery ratio of this, or other pans, that are made to be used in a stream with ideal flow. There are many ways to move gold from one location and distribute it in another. If that secondary location is not my safety deposit box, it's simply not a good way to do it.

I will not speak for Doc but I use the flow pan more for bulk sampling a spot to determine if there is gold in. So I take a unclassified bucket and run it and it helps to determine if I will prospect that area. I do not think it was designed to be a finish pan where you have done the work of classifying down to quarter inch. I would use the multi sluice for that. Dan thanks for all your videos I learn a lot from them and love the scenery you show us. I might make BC a vacation spot some time.

I love this series you're doing Dan. I own a Flow Pan but I haven't used it yet. I would echo another comment about the Flow Pan and your lack of flow for purposes of the test. The whole reason those gaps are there is to let water through as you stratify. I know you know this, and I don't have a solution how you can test the Flow Plan with the same material while using it in a river or creek. Great videos though!!!

I found with this pan when used in still water, or a tub, it is more efficient taking out the directional riffle mat that comes with it and replace it with a standard ribbed V groove mat. That way the direction or flow of washing does not matter.

I believe the thing to remember here is not all processes are effective in every situation. I pan glacial gold and have move a lot of material to find a little bit of little bits. I haven't used the flow pan in a tub at all but for places where the stream flows and no other power is available this works very well. It has been my experience that if you have to tip the pan to get water to flow out and carry the tailings away, it will lose gold just as fast as you want to run. Controlling the water flow is best accomplished by varying the depth of the water in the pan. If the water is fast, don't sink it as far. Slow water depth is less of a factor but any agitation should be side to side as front to back seems to lift the heavies over the mat. And the amount fed in needs to be smaller than you would run in a regular pan. The Speed comes with how fast you can process that smaller amount. A garden trowel is my favorite tool to feed it. 1 scoop, 10 seconds of stratification and 10 seconds of letting the flow clear the tailings. Then add another scoop. The material I run is glacial till. Most of it is best described as silt with 10% sand sized and 10% small rocks. Very few larger rocks. It isn't the ideal material to look for gold in and I will never make money at it. But it is what I have so it is what I work with. Maybe someday I can visit somewhere that has actual gold. Until then I will do what I can with what I have at hand and the occasional mailbox prospecting adventure.

Hey Dan. Idk man. It just doesn’t give it justice with it being called a flow pan to shake it like that. But I’m not a naysayer, I love your videos. Maybe simulate a river flow by using the mini gold hog sluice somehow? Idk I’m no expert. Would be cool to see the pan in its element

You can hold your hands inside flow holes and help hold the material in the pan as you stratify. But you are right it has high potential for loss

Hello Dan, From watching Doc in his videos he rotates back and forth first to stratify and get gold on the bottom before the side to side washing. You did the side to side the entire time so you were washing out the gold before it could stratify. Also, you continue to waste time with back and forth stratify motion that you do not need. Just the initial 5 seconds of strong rotation movements, then wash without shaking. With the way your were using it I think that if you had replaced the open sides with solid sides and turned the Flow Pan into the Hog Pan you would have captured all of the gold, or darn close to all the gold. I have no experience in any gold panning, just watch the videos. Thanks much for your channel. I am enjoying all your videos.

I have the predesesor to the flow pan. Shipped all the way from USA to Oz. I was impressed with the concept and design.. only after use I don't think it can handle pindan clay. Sandy areas only. Not the pans fault, I'm trying to make it do something I don't think anything can.

Hi.Dan I know you like the mats as much as I do.This is just my opinion and a reason I never bought one.The mats are designed to have a steady flow of water in one direction.I think if you were to pick up the mini and shake it back and forth the result would be the same most would blow out.Doc has some awesome minors moss and should try that instead of mat.

At about 11:20 it looked like you almost dropped the pan into the tub but held onto it with your left hand and pulled it out of the water. When that happened I wondered if you had lost a bunch of material. Is that possible? Just observations from an ignorant novice. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them and appreciate you taking the time to make them for us.

I wish you could get your hands on a “Hog Pan”, the predecessor to this pan. Huge sides, trap in the bottom, all the thing the flow pan lacks, but became cost ineffective to produce. Actually, looked like the pyramid pan took some notes from it, but you could stand the Hog pan up to load it.

Thanks Dan Ouch, I love my gold hog flow pan, what I see is the ends size need to be a little bit higher ,for washing the big rocks , slow enough to rinse the rocks clean , It's captures nuggets flower gold floats through the exit ,The Australian prospector is the flower gold pro . Floating gold rushes out with the rinse . Thanks Dan I will modify my gold hog ,Your honesty is rare my friend like Pauly , Vogus prospecting Texas has flower gold super fine , long narrow sluice 6ft long foldable in half home made coupled with Docs Matt's yeah baby . LOL HEY Doc if you do see this I need a 6ft long flow pan Matt plzzzz. Good video .

Docs a good man slowing the flow washes the bigger rocks down it has its issues but rocks at catching small nuggzzz lol , Off the top of my head a real fine mesh slip on solves the problem until rocks are washed . That's to me was where the lose occurred but that's just me I'm a rookie ,but I love all of you guys who still dream of striking it rich the natural way earthen way shows respect without destroying habitats. When I move rocks I build fisherman's pads do me a favor next time your on the Frazior river black lava rock you passed a few months back was I seeing right nice big black lava stone ?

Don’t butter it up and feel bad Dan, it’s the real deal that your testing. I use and love gold hog products to but one thing I don’t like is how they test their products with so much gold, doesn’t matter how much they loose it still looks impressive when you see two grams of gold in the mats, i like how little cons they have but I still believe more cons gets more gold with old fashioned miners moss and expanded metal

@@Danhurd but that would happen a lot more when you are using it on a river. Ive seen almost every person I watch panning sink or tip a pan as they work but because theyre using pans with taller sides it doesn't fall out. It looks to me like the only way to really use this pan is as a sluice in the river flow and not as a gold pan at all

Hey Dan. I really enjoy your videos. I feel every time I use my flow pan that during the initial stratifying I'm loosing lots out of the sides. I'm going to find some material I can block those with until I've stratified enough then remove the blocks and proceed. I think that would make a big difference. They sell the pan w/o the holes in the side but it's so fast and easy to use I really love it for initial searches. Just gotta get thru that first strat process. Smiles
