I had similar experience in some of our Dp type diaphragm seal level transmitter for produced water service with high H2S showing false reading due to H2 ion permeate into filled fluid. We try with gold plated ones for testing purpose as per the vendor recommendation but still the performance was not good enough..so finally landed on installing GWR level transmitter and its working hassle free. Problems solved.. As you explained in the video it could be the quality of gold plating or thickness compromised lead to the malfunction. Guessing… Anyways…well explained bro..keep posting such informative videos..great work…Much appreciated…🤝

Great my understanding was there will be chemical reaction and SS316 may corroded or damaged. But thank now its clear. Still have a question here are you talking about hydrogen gas ? Or both liquid and gas ??

As per International standards and design criteria of top oil and gas companies it is around 5 to 6 Bar ( but note that it also depends on the temperature factor )

A very Good Question, The answer is NO. The thickness of most diaphragm seal membrane is around 0.05mm or 0.075mm so the Hydrogen atoms can permeate this wall. Thermowells have very high thickness as compared to diaphragm seal membrane. We can understand this as per the analogy that we gold plate the diaphragm seal membrane but we DONT gold plate the Pipe. Because Pipes have thickness like Schedule 40 or Schedule XS which is far higher than that of diaphragm seal membrane. However, precaution must be taken with respect to material selection. Tantalum is not a good choice for Hydrogen service and we should prefer SS316 in that case. (This is usually worked out by material engineer) however Gold plating would not be required. This is best of my understand 😊 Do let me know if you have any other thoughts !! And once again thanks for this amazing question that many engineer get confused about!!!
