Gold Plating Brass

What does it take to gold plate brass? I recently took a tour of a metal plating facility and documented the steps to gold plate the brass dice that I made. I had no idea cyanide was required for many steps in this process?! Fascinating to watch!

Very cool but I can't afford this setup. I'm just trying to make these brass screws shinier. I already clean, and polished them. Is there a lacquer or finish you'd recommend to make brass shinier and similar to gold plated.

I'd imagine for low batch orders like his (1) it wouldn't be really cheap since most shops hate doing prototype work. That being said I'd say a couple hundred bucks

Is there a difference in color between a gold plated brass and gold plated bronze? Or would they look the same since it’s gold plated?

Did they have to wear masks around the cyanide containing baths? Or was wearing gloves + a well ventilated facility enough?

Why is brass plated with copper then nickel before the gold plating? What is the rational for this sequence?

Chemistry among other things, gold won't stick to brass

Leif_Maginnis, Thank you so much for showing how you create gold plate brass! Very observable and you did an Excellent demonstration of how it is created!!!! I have heavy necklace chains that I wear that are 14k gold plated material over brass.. I wanted to ask Leif, do you by chance know the best way that I could could clean my gold plated brass necklaces? yes, its gold, if it wasn't I would say brass plating or something similar
