In Bruce Lee's lost interview with Pierre Berton, he low key dissed Tai Chi.
Bruce said that Tai Chi was an exercise for the elderly, like a health dance, but not a martial art.
You could make the excuse that maybe Bruce Lee just didn't know much about internal martial arts, but he knew, all you have to do is look at his notes.
Bruce Lee knew exactly what he was doing because he wasn't a big fan of Tai Chi, and I'm going to tell you 5 Reasons why Bruce Lee actually hated Tai Chi at one point.

You are simply wrong about Bruce and Tai Chi. Having studied under 3 former students of Bruce's you are simply telling misinformation ( though your latter info disproves your thesis). Your logic could equally be applied to wing chun. Bruce was Bruce. It would seem that he practiced Tai chi throughout his life more than wing chun as he formally abandoned wing chun but continued to practice tai chi. There are other reasons not suitable to a public forum. Like your other vids.:)

What people don't understand, Tai Chi, practiced by old folk (and young folk) in the park and in many schools, is derived from an actual fighting style of Kung Fu, meaning Grand Ultimate Fist. Tai Chi Chuan has a lot of very interesting and effective fighting principals. People just don't know and understand.

The health based Tai Chi today, is in fact created by China's WW2 vet, it is based on more regarding the training aspect of Tai Chi, a lot of martial art got those training aspect, for example Maui Thai and Hapkido. They just develop the train part even further. There are still some combat aspect that is still practice today. For example, Taiwan army got training in Tai Chi grappling, that was the only aspect of combat Tai Chi that is kept till date. I know some people in the UK also practice it. It be interesting to see how it work against Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is about, charging forward, grab you by the waist, lift you up a little bit and then slam you down. Tai Chi grappling is about sliding to your side and grab you by the waste and then slam you down, it is both ground fighting technique, I would love to see, which is more effective.

Bruce Lee died at 32 years old - he was still in his physical 'Prime'. I think that had Bruce Lee lived into old age, he would have increasingly accepted and adapted Tai Chi principles and training into his own regimen. Gradually, as he aged, all that intense power and speed training would have gotten harder and harder to recover from, and nagging injuries would have become a more common situation - so Lee would have had to incorporate lower intensity 'Soft Training' in order to allow himself to heal from his usual Intensive Training. A Bruce Lee at 60 or 70 would have trained much differently than he did in his 20's and 30's.

So I guess we're Tai-Chi cousins. I spent 7 years (during the 1970's) with Prof. TR Chung, who (along with YC Chiang) learned Tai-Chi, Hsing-I, Pa-Kua, and Shaolin Boxing (Tan Tui) from Master Kuo in China. I was only interested in the Internal Arts, having already done a lot of Aikido in Florida, near Patrick Air Force Base. Yes, Kuo did trash Bruce Lee, effortlessly. Bruce Lee got his reputation mainly from picking fights with Karate practitioners. As Prof Chung told me, when I was new to the Bay Area and looking for a Martial Arts school (his school was in Berkeley) "The Japanese learned everything they know from the Chinese." The original Mr. Humble there ... I had asked him how he would compare Aikido with Tai-Chi. Actually, after many years of studying Pa-Kua (as well as Tai-Chi) I have examined the patterns of movement in these systems and concluded that Aikido is a straight up rip off of Pa-Kua, it's just practiced differently, as per the respective cultures.

Thanks for sharing this history. :) The examples from 1:43 and 9:00 are eye-opening. They show that Taiji masters actually stood up and performed very well against the precursors of MMA (i.e. that White Crane master and Bruce Lee). ( Sadly, I've seen haters nowadays take snips of the "Taiji vs White Crane" footage out of context to show how "silly" Chinese traditional martial arts look in a serious fight. ... as if people practice martial arts to look pretty. 🤷‍♂️ And of course, regarding the second example, the anti-Taiji/anti-TMA crowd would not even acknowledge examples like this, because it would break their worldview. 🤷‍♂️ )

I always laugh when people claim some martial arts doesn't work in practice as if they were never put to real use. It's more of a modern flaw of some traditional martial arts that they are taught in a less practical way without much sparring.

I wonder when Bruce Lee realized that fighting styles does not matter as long as you learned, disciplined and discovered oneself to their own abilities, then that 'oneself' will understand the essence of the art. So it's understandable that if someone is not fitted to a particular martial art, try a different one as long as it fits right for you.

I realize something, if you want to make a break through, is it easier to follow in someone else's steps in life or is it easier to be noticed making your own path. Think about it someone else steps can always be tracked and trace a certain path all which is preset action. For the streets anyone will tell you it is never the same in order to be affective you must take the lead in order to control the outcome, otherwise you will be waiting to see what happens next vs ending it for your safety!

I have done martial arts for 45 years and in my early days was eager to learn all if I could. I often heard about ‘internal energy’ or internal strength but no one to actually teach exactly how to achieve this - until i found it in the unlikeliest of places - a young irishman teaching tai chi. Was going to walk away from his class but he asked me to join and I said I would if I could see applications of this so called ‘ internal energy’. I experienced the 1 inch punch which threw me 10 feet into the wall behind me! I experienced sticky hands exercise. I experienced transfer of chi into your opponent to cause internal damage over a short time. Bruce May have dismissed tai chi but he certainly had grasp of its principles and practiced them e.g., you cannot be good at sticky hands unless you relax mind and body. His speed comes from stored internal energy as well as physical conditioning. Tai chi is moving meditation and Bruce’s philosophy embodied this (emptying your mind and becoming like water). Yes the principles of tai chi together with your preferred martial art will give you a great advantage over your opponent but finding a good teacher who is willing to demonstrate all this…….?

I believe you're making a mistake trying to put in a box the thoughts and mind set of Bruce Lee's love hate of anything! I say this due to his history of use of anything to help him reach a new level. In order to achieve any evaluation of self, you have to at some part learn to listen to your body. Doing this process a person can make connections with themselves that may reach a level of success thought to of been reached only by certain avenues, per say classes or teaching and teachers. But in fact a person can surpass any level of anyone who has a close mind. Food for thought, Bruce Lee was known for sounding off with energy that made others feel as if he was not " normal, " but I believe he was projecting his inner power, heart, spirit and his connections with his body's expression. Think about it most classical styles tell you what to yell ,how to yell and why your yelling. Martial Arts is like life a living evolution of experience, expression and enteractions. Each lesson can open the world 🌎with a newborn perspective of enlightenment and apprehensive views on different point of life. I would 1st place a good look within yourself, cause how much can you truly master if you have mastered what you can be tempted by!

Well said. Agree. One definition for ki is action mind and body unified. Bruce is doing, expressing his inner power through his body. Absolutely fascinating and your research is exemplary. A veritable treasure trove for posterity! My first martial art I studied for around six weeks was what I understood to be called Tai Chi Chuan, back in the 1980's; I was 19. I loved my first lesson, and we learned this long (kata?) and I loved the fluid and graceful motion which would later endear me to dancing. In addition, in that first lesson, perhaps 2nd, I got to see TCC in extremely fast motion, and it was incredible. Sadly, I moved state, so had to say goodbye to TCC. Fast forward 6 years, I was attacked outside a pub in another state, Brisbane, and I reverted to a part of the Tai Chi form I learned and could not believe what I saw. I turned side on to my attacker, dropped to one knee (not part of the kata, but somehow, I knew it was right) and "wheeled" my attacked through the air and he literally was propelled from left to right mid air, and I don't believe to this day that I actually made physical contact with him. How I was able to do this with no follow up practice in those years defies logic. But I will say this: after my first week, the instructor asked on Week 2 - Can anyone remember the kata from the week before? I was a bit shy so stayed silent. But no one could recall. So, I said yes, and was asked to demonstrate and the instructor said that he never saw anyone able to reproduce that after one week (turns out years later I have a near photograph memory for movement, born out of a childhood experience). The duration of the kata was around 90 seconds (although I did practice at home a few times that week, but that's it). I went on to spend relatively small amounts of time in other MA but I got enough mastery to fulfil me in very short spans of time. Now at 60 years old I like to do very fast punching and boxing training, as well as middle distance running and resistance work. I wished I'd pursued the MA because that was not the only isolated example. From that day on however, I always knew there was something unique and powerful about TCC, but just couldn't put my finger on it. Looking at Bruce, it seems to me that he hoarded a lot of MA information and reconstructed / claimed it as his own. I would say he is a gifted athlete and exhibitionist, but if he had given credit where credit was due, he would have been quintessential, not just phenomenal, and lived longer. I partly understand the arrogance, but the lack of humility I don't, given what has to be imparted for one to become great. Some of us have the ability to learn at astonishingly accelerated rates, but this should be appreciated as an absolute God given gift, for the glory of the One and Only. Putting together a portrait of Bruce Lee is complex, but you are doing a sterling job Goldenbell Training Man. Keep at it please and thank you for getting to the truth of it - your painstaking work is being done with modesty and in the process, you are bringing to light many people who have not received due credit for their contribution to the MA and combat systems.

@@Lucifer_M0rningstar Tradition has it that the internal styles were the original styles of Chinese martial arts, practised by the monks in the temples, but a quicker to learn style was needed to provide warriors for some emperor's campaign somewhere. So the venerable monks formulated the external styles of Chinese martial arts to provide a fighting force more quickly for the Emperor's needs. It is hardly a surprise that a young gangbanger on the streets of Hong Kong in the mid twentieth century would find an external style of martial art more useful, but if you look at the writings of Bruce Lee in the latter part of his life his philosophy borrows a lot from the internal styles of Chinese martial arts. "Be like water." I mean, come on. You couldn't ask for a more Taiji-like phrase.
@oldtyger
@oldtyger 2 жыл бұрын
Well any art depends more often on the individual practitioner in terms of practical use. Having studied both taijiquan and aikido as well as numerous other styles, I believe any art can be useful if practiced with that intent. Kinda hard to use any art if all you do is practice with willing partners or do forms. Also the internal martial arts did develop independently in China, more or less, and many of the most famous practitioners were notable fighters. As for the meditative and non-combat aspects of taijiquan and other arts, those were never the original focus but have significant benefits for many. People may choose to learn a specific aspect of any art and I don’t see any harm in that. It’s actually much easier to find a taijiquan teacher with non-combat knowledge than one with expertise in practical application. Internal arts also take much longer to learn. It took me about 7 years before I could grasp Chen style fajing.

Like most others, I loved Bruce’s early movies. I was in Asia training then and may even become a JKD zealot. When training with Richard Bustillo, (may he Rest In Peace) I learned many things, and have a great respect for Richard. So when he says that when he and Danny trained with Bruce in LA Bruce was the fasted man he had ever seen, I have to take to take it at face value. When I became disenchanted with the image I had of Bruce was when I realized he was using toy nunchaku in the movie Game of Death. Don’t take my word for it, watch it in slow motion. When he is moving up the different levels in the tower, he eventually fights Danny Inosanto. When Bruce is “showing off” his nunchaku twirling you can see him hit himself in the face. He flinches closing his eye and jerking his head back just a bit. Now… Listen to the noise they make when twirled. It is exactly the same sound that plastic toy nunchaku make. Ok, now go back and watch the movie again. You’ll realize that they are plastic toys and Bruce does, in fact, hit himself in the face. I would think that Bruce would have used wooden ones, even in the movies.

The combat application of taijiquan has for all intents and purposes been lost. Very few people ever learned it and it’s rare to find someone with that knowledge. IMO the awesomeness of push hands seems to have relegated the other fighting aspects of taijiquan to the dust bin. And tui shou is really only one facet of taijiquan application. Chen style and Southern Wu style have jumping kicks in their forms. But no one uses them because there’s no sparring any more in taijiquan. Southern Wu style even has specific san shou drills. But those are just techniques. The hardest part about taijiquan IMO is understanding how to use internal power and integration with tui shou and rooting.

I think more so internalizing the mechanic I recently started doing tai chi and I probably did much of the mechanics overall, but doing it slow I have difficulty with getting coordinated, which makes me believe that when doing it fast and hard I have flaws that make it not as good as it could be. Also it depends on the style of tai chi possibly. Different styles have different focuses. Technically, karate should have influence from Hakka arts, which use “internal” concepts as well. So if you learned karate from a proper place, it’s possibly that all tai chi could do for you is mostly help you refine some things you already had exposure to.

Tai chi will teach you how to use whole body movement and you'll become more sensitive to incoming force through the use of push hands. Also become more balanced or rooted some might say. Some of the most renowned athletes, martial artists, and entertainers have claimed Bruce Lee as their inspiration. I realize that young people do bring new ideas and new talent, but not in this case. You're attacking the legacy of someone who symbolizes not perfection but, excellence. And, for the purpose of promoting what? Sure, the guy was flawed. But, he never told anyone to go forth, and be an ass-clown. He told people to excell, to think, to express themselves. To meditate. To be like water. So, unless you're bringing something better, or something comparable then you're just wasting energy on hate in an attempt to promote yourself. Similar to these young, present day rappers who achieve wealth and fame by spewing vulgarities, and jibberish. By verbally attacking females.
