On August 1997, Rare released Goldeneye 007 - the first person shooter that is considered one of the best games ever made. In 2012 it was discovered that 10 hidden games were built into Goldeneye. In this episode we take a closer look at this.

Went to school with Stamper's son, Joe - got to play Goldeneye 007 at their HQ in Twycross before it was released!!! I just remember the black and red debug menu you could pull down with the shoulder buttons and getting stuck in the sniper tower's geometry in the first level :) best gaming memory ever, still got the little badge they gave me. @@ModernVintageGamer Love your videos! One more free weird fact about Goldeneye: the Russian soldiers in the green uniforms, the dark brown-haired one is Joe's uncle, and the gawky-looking blond-haired soldiers pulling a scrunched up face in the green Russian uniforms are Joe and his little bro :) dad-stamper scanned their faces into the game, I can never play the game without thinking of them!

I'd love to be such a skilled programmer that I could write an emulator for an 8 bit computer as a "side project" during the development of a 3D FPS on a new hardware platform.
@adamsfusion
@adamsfusion 3 жыл бұрын
If it helps, you don't have to be all that skilled. A lot of what you end up learning to make this possible is that nothing is really magic and it all comes down to following specs closely. Writing a ZX Spectrum emulator is easy, legitimately and not as a flex or anything like that. Writing a good one that accurate and efficient is tricky. IMO, it's a fun project I think every developer should try someday. Write a simple emulator, even if it's just for the Gigatron; it's a really eye opening experience.

I was very happy in 1983 when I got my 48K Spectrum, especially when I eschewed my brother's 12inch B&W portable in our bedroom and went downstairs to sample the delights of Atic Atac on our colour Hitachi through RF. Yes, you could actually see what colours the keys were instead of interpreting 50 shades of grey (well 3). Then later a mate up the road lent me his 'big box' Sabre Wulf for the weekend. He was not pleased when I finished it that Sunday and mentioned the message at the end (featuring Underwurld). Now I have all the big box games in a cabinet (though they have faded?!?!??!). I was also in seventh heaven in 98 when Banjo Kazooie came out and the colours spilling off our Sony Nicam CRT were a living room-filling joy to behold. Halcyon days. Shame these days are over. Oh well, just going to have a quick go on Conker Reloaded. The smell of opening Knight Lore, Alien 8 etc. I remember it so well.

@James Laing You had to have a good cassette unit. I think (I am getting on) mine was a Sanyo, an upright model with sliders for volume and tone. That tone control meant it loaded the troublesome turbo-loader tapes my mates struggled with (okay, I'm talking about TDK D90s stuffed with goodies - I bought many games though - still do). Getting four minutes in (loading) and the screen dropping back to the Sinclair copyright notice or a psychedelic mosaic of colours, it was crushing.

I-.... I call it "Up-C". Similarly, Left-C, Right-C, and Down-C... Although I suppose if you were saying it out loud for quick directions, like in a cheat code, you'd want to say "C-Up" to so the person receiving directions doesn't press Up on the Joystick or D-Pad immediately upon hearing "Up"... Now I have a lot to think about... Of course, now we have the Switch, with its many controller configurations, and button designations are meaningless. Sure, the buttons say "A, B, X, Y", but games that support single Joy-Con input now have to just illustrate by showing all 4 buttons, with one lit up.

Rare was put on Kinect duty for ages, now they are making Sea of Thieves one of the more popular games on xbox.
@Octave_Rolland
@Octave_Rolland 3 жыл бұрын
Creative differences were the biggest problem, many Rare employees felt Nintendo was too controlling. The provocative tone in Conker and the game-breaking bug in DK64 were the last nails in the coffin. By the time Rare began working for Microsoft most of their best talents had left, and the rest were too confident in their ability to keep making genius games. When Viva Pinata released it was clear they had done very little for the Xbox brand, and Microsoft wanted to get proper return on their investment because 1/3 of a billion dollars is a lot of money. Rare got banned to the Kinect mines and that's basically what they deserved. The release of Sea of Thieves, which was in development for a bunch of years and still featured incredibly shallow gameplay at launch, showed that even the Kinect mines weren't enough for them to get their heads out of their asses. I hope things are getting better these days.

Instead the other player must stop moving to use the precise aim crosshairs to aim downward and deliberately at him. Having worked and shipped commercial software, what happened was: Beta cartridges were made, QA aproved everything, then the plan was going to remove the emulator and all other related code, and this was decided to be extremely dangerous as the recompiled code might end up on a different memory chip, adding any kind of bug subtle enough you won't pick it if you don't do a full QA run, and that is basically duplicating efforts. A Manager took the decision of "OK let's go GOLD, hide everything and please touch the minimum possible amount of code to not break anything for gods sake".

On the Amstrad copyright issue, Alan Sugar ordered that the ROM images required for Amstrad CPC and Spectrum emulation be freely available to the public away back in the 90s. This means that had Rare did a little bit of research, they could've used the Spectrum kernel without issue - at worst they could have given Alan Sugar a wee phone call just to get an extra official OK on having it in a commercial product.

Amstrad still exist, but are now a wholly-owned division of Sky broadcasting now - specifically manufacturing. However that wasn't the case when Goldeneye came out. Alan Sugar still owned the company - and he had already given the blessing for the CPC roms to be freely distributed back around 1994/95 - early enough for Rare to have gotten an official OK had they simply asked.

After Squaresoft, Rare was the second big loss for Nintendo.

Did Nintendo have any exclusive contracts with Square? I heard Square wanted to develop on the PlayStation because they used the CD-R platform. I think (I'm not 100%) FF7 was in early development on the Nintendo CD thing. Just having more storage led to the jump in graphics from sprites to polys for their massive RPG. Seemed like somewhere along the lines Square had exclusive contracts with Sony after or slightly before FF7. I might research this later, or see if I can find videos about it. Man Square and Rare, both companies that where VERY innovative in the early years of gaming. Now with our technical advances in gaming it would take a miracle to impress me like I was in the late 90's

That's what they got for being pigheaded and thinking that they had real leverage over said companies.

@@dmaskell92 FF7 is not the only reason for Square to switch. Secret of Mana was a highly anticipated game developed for the CD Rom addon for SNES. And when the addon was cancelled, Square was pissed and had to downgrade SOM at fundemental levels (imagine what they probably created). And Final Fantasy was in a similar situation, where the N64 didn't got any disc drive, but Square probably expected one. At that time every console developer jumped to CD. And they would need to downgrade the whole FF7 too or just use a different platform. Nintendo is self-inflicted.

@@albino_gringo1912 Quite the dramatic statement, don't you think? They still had a lot of talent at the time. They even had a lot of Nintendo 64-era talent during the 360 years. It's normal in development houses to have talent leave. What people don't talk about is all the new talent that joins these companies. It's not as if only Nintendo-64 developers know how to make games. I mean, despite the burnout and massive departures after each release, Naughty Dog still make great games. It's not as if talent can't be replaced with sometimes even more talented developers.
@Trunchisholm
@Trunchisholm 3 жыл бұрын
@@albino_gringo1912 Studio heads are important, but replaceable. Also, the Stampers were not that involved in game development in their last years at the company. Many at Rare were in fact unhappy about the secrecy they had imposed between different teams at Rare and all the internal competition they encouraged, instead of fostering collaboration. As for your second statement, that is completely subjective at best. There are plenty of people who find their post-64 titles exciting. Heck, even though it's not my cup of tea, there are lots of active users who seem to love Sea of Thieves. To me, Viva Piñata is still their best achievement. That game is pure bliss and a technical marvel.

If I had even known about this before now, I would think it to be false... being well known that N64 carts hold very limited storage space. I Just looked it up: Golden Eye only used 12MB. Mario64 used 8MB, Ocarina and Turok 2 used 32MB, Mario Kart and Smash 16MB. Resident Evil 2, Conker's BFD, Majora's Mask used 64MB. It's amazing how "small" these games are!

I'm sure you know this but your videos are some of the very best online. I love how you explain complicated things like the PS3s SPUs with incredibly easy to understand language. It's because you understand things that you're able to explain them well, especially when compared to most other channels. This video is just another example of that.

To answer the question around the 4:35 mark over where the ZX Spectrum games were going to be in GoldenEye 007: they were planned to be available in the form of an in-game arcade machine, either tucked away in a hidden location on a story mode map or within an arcade room on a bonus/multiplayer map, according to director and producer Martin Hollis. The reason why it didn't happen was rather simple: they simply ran out of time and left it on the cutting room floor along with a couple of unused MP maps.
