I think the reason people like the Goldfinger song so much is how much it personifies gold... I mean think about it; it's bold, in your face, exciting, beautiful and dangerous in a sort of cold, blunt sense. the high pitch winds backing it up are almost... seductive, for lack of a better word. Yes it is incredibly loud, but think about if you could open a door to a vault filled with billions and billions of dollars of shimmering gold bullion... If you could take the emotion you would feel that first moment you looked inside and translate it to a sound, it would be the first 30 seconds or so of that song.

Regarding the golf game at 8:50, they're scoring the game on a hole by hole basis (match play, like the Ryder Cup). Bond had just sunk his putt, so Goldfinger had to putt to half the hole, but because he missed (distracted by the gold bar) he lost the hole, so there was no need to finish the hole and sink his putt.

5:16 my favorite part of this is how the hand goes into frame in chop position, mimicking the gun slides into frame trope. I am waiting to hear Cal comment on Connery's absolute gorgeous maleness, but maybe he's just not Cal's type. Connery was a good 50% of the sensation of the series: he spoke well, he moved like a panther, he looked believable making love or war, and he did have just enough eyebrow for for a bit of sardonic humour. Connery was the bomb.

Interesting take on the Goldfinger theme. I'm among the large majority that likes it. Specifically for me, some of it has to do with the swagger, all too apt for a gold-obsessed criminal mastermind. But what sells it is the instrumentation, which is much easier to pick up in karaoke versions. And in the best ones, at least if one fills in the voice, it can sound like three melodies at once... even what one might consider the harmony. The muted trumpet's sassy brassy accompaniment to Bassey adds a deliciously jazzy touch, while the strings can lend a strangely melancholy touch for compelling contrast. John Barry knew his stuff, and he was genius at smashing any number of genres together into smashing-good adventuring music. It's like he took Mack the Knife and, especially with the instrumentation, lent it an unabashedly Romantic aspect.

Back then each Bond film had a major and unique theme, I'm not talking about music, plus one or two sub-motifs. Thus each entry stood out distinctly from the others. Goldfinger was the gilded Bond movie with spectacular action that took place just a few blocks over from where you live. Also, compared to nowadays, the films were made with an appealing sort of minimalism.

Harsh on the song. This song sets the template (or at least the expectation) for all future Bond title songs. Which is to say, if the song “Goldfinger” had not been a success, there would have been no set-piece title songs on any of the subsequent films. No “Thunderball”, no “Live and Let Die”, no “Nobody Does It Better”, no “All Time High”, no “The World Is Not Enough”. Your review rightly points out where other tropes in this film become tropes for all Bond films, so why the absence of credit for the song, regardless of its dynamic oomph.

OK, one more thing before I stop bothering this video....Bond is pissed off about Jill's death because he's pissed off with himself for letting it happen. Calvin, I understand and forgive you for not liking the theme song. It is music style of an earlier time. The theme song and sequence I imagine is probably one of the last parts completed, so it can capture the tone of the completed movie, (no back-up for this, just my own logic). This movie was the biggest Bond movie yet made at the time, so they were looking for the “biggest” theme song! “Goldfinger” was definitely the biggest, loudest, brassiest of all, making it Bombastic to your ears. For us older fans Goldfinger is a classic.
