The reason they dubbed "MI7" was because they were afraid that the real MI6 would be offended by being included in a film like this

I agree that they did a great job with the first ever bond film, in that they went straight into the title sequence instead of an opening scene. This just feels right, kind of like an introduction to the whole series.

Fun fact, the reason for the glass screen is that Sean Connery is… was deathly afraid of spiders. It didn’t really work so additional shots were done with the help of good ole handy dandy stunt man, Bob Simmons, who also portrays Bond in the opening gun barrel shot (it wouldn’t be until Thunderball that Connery would be in the gun barrel). I’d have probably gotten rid of the spider altogether, but hey, the sixties.
@spaceace438711 ай бұрын
Yeah that pane of glass was beyond obvious.

One of my favorite Bond films. Love how low key it feels and it’s driven largely by the espionage/spy theme, rather than something grandiose. Connery is excellent and I love that we get to see what Bond is really like in this film.

The character dancing wildly in the nightclub scene may have been a zombie that wandered in from a nearby cemetery. They could have used him in Live and Let Die.

I still love your jokes about the hyperactive man at the club and the The Blind Mice match lighting gags.
@FGKaye6 жыл бұрын
YOU'RE MISSING THE JOKE ! " Trench, Sylvia Trench ", says it FIRST, Bond merely " parrots her ". THIS IS IMPORTANT, because, when " Ryder, Honey Ryder ", says it later, it makes Sean giggle. Now he just says; " I'm James Bond ". I NEVER spotted this, when I was a kid, but on further viewings, I HAVE ! It's a GREAT 4th wall joke, that it seems, NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER NOTICED ! HOW ABOUT A PART III & COMMENT ON THE ORIGINS OF THAT PHRASE. NO ONE ELSE HAS !

Recently watched this film again and I found it quite interesting how so many of the iconic ingredients were already in place here without yet coming quite so well together as they would in later films. They were clearly testing and developing with this first movie and as a result, it feels kind of unfinished and unpolished. That doesnt make it a bad film but I understand Calvin when he makes his icecream-comparsion. The one thing that keeps "Dr.No" together is Sean Connery, already hitting the nail right on the head with his portrayment.

It’s honestly funny, when I started to marathon countdown with my friend to watch all the Bond movies leading up to No Time To Die...this promise was pre-COVID disaster. Anyway! It surprised me how VERY different this movie was to my expectations...I expected lucrative gadgets but the most Bond gets is just a Walter and a Geiger counter...like seriously! And how visceral this movie starts with a spy operation getting jumped over and killed. Like 0.o man I underestimated how fast shit got real on the FIRST bond movie. Honey Ryder is gorgeous and I admit I joked how they would make them comfortable in their prison quarters...no sooner had I joked that they get a swank room and my friend laughed on the other end of the audio call as I screamed “I WAS KIDDING!!!” Oh a joyous first impression ^^ Bond fan in the making a few weeks back~

I always quite enjoy Dr No, because of the tension that is created quite often throughout (e.g. Dent's death scene, first reveal of Dr No) and considering it's the first film some of the low budget issues such as the back projection gimmicks are forgiveable. What stops it from being a top level Bond film is that they don't know what to do with Dr No, as he doesn't get as much screen time as he deserves, considering he is the title character. That said, a classic film and set many Bond trends that continue to this day.

Tahngarth here. After watching a lot Decker Shado's movie reviews, I did notice none of the Bond movies on his channel. Since I'm a big Bond fan (seen ALL of them and had all of them on VHS, except the most recent Craig's films, I wanted to check out any reviews on KZfaq. Unfortunately I lost my entire VHS tapes and I am working on collecting them on DVD, I'm still a great fan of the Bond franchise. I just searched KZfaq for Bond movie reviews and discovered your channel. Very impressive. Aftet avoiding reviewing about 186 comments on this video, I just wanted to add a factoid about the spider scene. The reason for the plane of glass between Sean Connery and the spider is the fact that Sean has arachnophobia. The scenes with the spider crawling on his arm was actually his stunt double. I don't think the spider was actually killed by Sean (has to do with Animal Rights agreement) but I don't think he was "acting" in that scene. This info was in the special features of the DVD as well on the IMDB website. I know you did this review several years ago but you did such an amazing job with it than I'll be joining your subscription list. I do have a single hiccup: your "Shells" bit was too much. I wish you'd edited that bit out. Any way, keep up with the fantastic work.

"Dr. No" has a lot issues in this movie. There are plenty of jump cuts in each scene, the score is too screeching when you hear that irritating music, and the characters were okay, but with the exception with Sean Connery and Ursula Andress managed their roles memorable. Connery is one the best classic James Bond character ever, but by god he made his character such a style and a good professional spy for all of these 6 previous films. Honey Ryder is one the first beautiful Bond girls who becomes a blonde babe back then when women become so exotic in the 60's and she still the best.
@ricardocantoral76727 жыл бұрын
I never had a problem with the characters myself. I agree about the music. Monty Norman's score was extremely corny.

Deadly Vanitas Norman's score easily one of the worst Bond scores ever. It's like something out of a B grade sci-fi movie from the 50's.

Dr No is an good movie and an okay 007-Film but by no means one of the franchises best. All the famous elements are there, they just don't come together as well as they would in later entries. But I realize it is the first movie, so I'll cut them some slack. There is one thing that is 100% perfect from the beginning, though: Sean Connerys' portrayal as Bond. He nailed the characters' style, mannerisms and character right from the start. His performance makes this movie.

One of my favourites, and one of the first films I saw on video. I've seen it conjectured that Trench invented the Bond introduction style because he's mocking the way that she introduced herself. Not sure if that's true. I often think of this of being more postwar than cold war. British establishment and all that. I like that it shows Bond's defining personality trait of "risk taker". Shells. Funniest Calvin skit ever.
@brendanmatelan212910 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you know this Calvin, but the gun Bond killed Dent with was a FN Browning M1910, not the Walther as thought. The reason for the switch was they couldn't find a suppressor nor a Walther to fit a suppressor so the substituted with a browning that to a suppressor. Also, the PPK said in the film is actually a longer barreled Walther PP. We were tricked.

I think Eunice Gayson as Sylvia Trench sounds sexy, whereas Nikki Van Der Zyl's reading sounds robotic. I know she's supposed to be sultry and struck by Bond, but she sounds like someone doing an elocution lesson. I wonder if Eunice was dubbed because maybe she sounded a bit 'common' compared to the posh voice they went with. And that's how they envisaged Sylvia. But I think she sounds more of a hellcat with her own voice, and even without knowing you can tell she's dubbed, as she like I say it seems robotic. Anyone got any theories on why they changed her voice?
@spyboy19643 жыл бұрын
I think that your theory that she didn't sound posh enough for the filmmakers is right on the mark.
@davidjames5793 жыл бұрын
@@spyboy1964 Thanks! Listening to it again a year on, I still think this is the case. I also can see that the manner of the voice change is very much to change Sylvia's character. I think they might also have had problems with how sexually dominant Sylvia is. Maybe they thought it made Bond seem weaker, especially with her breaking into his flat, it might make her seem a crazed nympho, and Bond just a passive figure. Van Der Zyal plays it differently; more girly, and in awe of Bond, and less controlling. Gayson's Sylvia is "I've got you, and I'm going to do what I want with you" while VDZ's is "I can't hide how I feel, you can have me". But I still think VDZ's come across as a cold fish, compared to Gayson, who almost seems to be channeling Shirley Bassey's voice and manner!

Today I've heard about Agatha Christie's play "The Mousetrap" and her play & short story "Three Blind Mice," but then I've learned the three hitmen aren't based on Mrs. Christie's work, but on the British nursery rhyme "Three Blind Mice." The song and the lyrics are also based on the nursery rhyme. You learn something new every day. I've also listened to another British nursery rhyme for the first time in my life: "London Bridge Is Falling Down" and I think a James Bond parody could make use of that song. London Bridge is falling down and James Bond has to fix it. Target audience: 4 to 6 year olds.

You're right, the fire during the chase scene with the Sunbeam and the old jalopy is a bit weird. But I think the director intended the audience to think that the gas tank at the back of the car exploded. But those old jalopies were built so durable that a gas tank explosion during a crash would be hard to cause. especially going down a hill, the nose of the car would take the brunt of the impacts. Maybe poetic license??
@soco20205 жыл бұрын
Bond technically shot Dent with an FN model of 1910 as a stand in for the Walther. The props team couldn't find a suppressor to fit the prop PPK in time for the scene to be filmed.

when I first saw this movie when the bartender said mixed not stirred when he gave James Bond a Vodka Martini at his hotel room, I thought to myself "I'm no mixologist or nothing like that, but at the same time, I'm quite certain that mixed and stirred are the exact same thing"
