This is the story of my 1968 Z/28 Chevrolet Camaro. I bought it in 1969 and sold it in the 70’s.
I lost track of it for many years but, was finally able to track down its whereabouts.
After several unsuccessful attempts to buy it back from the owner, he finally agreed to sell it back to me, and the rest is history!

When I turned 21 in 1970 I got $4,500.00 from a insurance settlement from a accident that happened at 5 years old. Of course I had to buy a car, so off to the ford dealer I go. In the show room was a Boss 429 Mustang, and low and behold it was going for $4,500 dollars. The dealer said it would go 200mph. I though, not with me in it. Anyway I didn't buy it and the way I drove back then there's was a good chance I wouldn't be here today. I ended up buying a 66 mustang GT 4 speed with a 289hipo for $1,000 dollars. All the best.

Thanks for sharing the history of your z28. I too own a 68' rs z28 early production. Early production late 67' to approx February 68' had "302" fender emblems. When I had my numbers matching engine rebuilt I made sure I did not have the deck resurfaced. It still had the factory "broached" texture. So many re-stamped blockes that are being claimed as original. Keep the great content coming!

I was so hoping that you would tell the story about your car. Thank you! It’s so nice in this day and age that you can get cylinder heads that flow so good that you can make 450 HP with a cam that idles almost like a grocery getter. The car is gorgeous AG and during the driving demonstration you can tell that this car really scoots! You don’t see many cars these days that you can shift into second gear and burn the tires off!

Such a great car and cool story, Alan- thanks for sharing. I have always dreamed about buying back my Daytona Yellow ’69 RS Z/28 that I owned in high school, and I have ALWAYS regretted selling it. I have kept my eyes on it over the years, but it’s always just been out of my reach price-wise. It just sold this year at Barrett-Jackson and now I don’t know where it’s at, unfortunately. You’re a lucky man to still own your Z/28, so hang on to it! Thanks again for all your posts- I always appreciate and enjoy them.👍🏻

Hi Alan, enjoyed the video and the history of your Z28, it truly is a beautiful car, also being a Canadian car which is documented makes it even more valuable along with the history of it. You can find many 69 Z28’s but trying to find a 68 is quite difficult, not having the original engine would not bother me because of the documentation of the vehicle, thanks again for the video and enjoy the car.

Hey, Alan. Nice car. Nice story. Here's a similar story for you. I had a friend back in 1969 who owned a nearly new '68 Z/28. We used to drag race along with other friends, street stuff, as well as the legal variety. I raced NHRA Stock/Super Stock with my '69 351 Mustang Mach 1. My Camaro Friend raced in the more radical Modified Production Class. Anyway, my car was quite competitive winning My Class a couple of times at the now long-defunct Connecticut Dragway. (NHRA ZED Division 1. "We're number 1.") My friend did o.k. but ended up losing his engine within a year. He had also cut the Camaros wheel lip openings to fit the largest allowable drag slicks. This was a year-old Camaro with original driveline and paint. He blew it up and cut the body. Sacrilege! He sold the car within the next couple of years. After having life intervene for a few decades he located and bought a similar though unmolested Z/28. I never had the inclination to modify my car other than to tweak the driveline to competitively fit into the lower drag racing classes. That Candyapple Red 1969 Mustang Mach 1 was presented to me, brand new, on August 28, 1969, by My Father as a 16th birthday present. It was a surprise. About a year earlier I wanted a Corvette and then changed my mind when I saw the first Mach 1s appear. I still own that Mach 1, 55 years later. Aside from the driveline mods, it remains a 12,000-mile original. Matching numbers, original paint, trim, glass, interior, etc. I never drove it in the rain or snow. I purchased a beater car to commute to College in 1972 and have driven the Mach 1 only occasionally since then. That car inspired me to establish a Classic Car Restoration Business that I've run for forty years. We specialized in total restorations of American Muscle and Pony Cars. Now over 70, I'm "downshifting" to retirement. Just winding up work for a couple of friends and my own stuff. Being "an engine guy" as are you, I've worked on and rebuilt Chevrolet V-8s, Mopars, including Hemis, many Fords, Small V-8s, Clevelands, 427 SOHCs, 428s, Boss 429s, and others. I have owned desirable Muscle Fords and even an NHRA competitive Pro-Stock Pinto in the mid-70s that ran high 8 second quarter mile times. Most of those cars are gone but not my first car. That '69 Mach 1. It was my first car and it will be my last car. There are times when I sit in the driver's seat when the engine is off, and turn on the Philco A.M. Radio expecting to hear reports of the 1969 Moon Landing, Richard Nixon, Watergate, the Vietnam War, and other events of the era. Then I turn the key and off I drive in My Time Machine. They say don't ever love something that can't love you back. I disagree. Alan, I'm certain you know exactly what I mean, and I'm certain You have those in your audience with similar stories.

Thanks for the question Pontiac 411. I had to answer this comment first. i started working at a Texaco Garage in 1964 for 75 cents/hour. When i graduated in 1970, I was making $2.20. Industrial wages by 1970 were about $3.00/hour to start. My first car was a 1955 Ford for $225. which I bought in Sept 1964. The three musts for my first car were V8, two door and standard transmission. I didn't turn 16 until October. AG

Excellent video. It's interesting that my '65 GTO also has an M20 wide ratio transmission. Regarding the numbers matching debate, I completely understand why collectors put so much emphasis on a car's authenticity, but these days I'm more interested in the nostalgia component of that equation and don't really care if the car has its original whatever. When I bought my GTO I didn't do a deep dive into if it were a numbers matching car or not. At the time I didn't really care that much, I just thought the car was cool. Later however I did order the PHS documentation on the car to satisfy my curiosity and lo and behold, the engine, trans, everything really was original to that car. A bonus I suppose but if those numbers didn't match, I would still like the car just as much. Thanks for sharing your story with us, Allan. It's a great story and a very cool car. See you in July!

Great information and memories. One quick question, way back when you purchased this car....when you bought it back in 69...did you ever think that this car would end up being and staying this special and desired? Or was it just a fun means of transport, likely to just rust away into oblivion like 99% of the cars of that time? And at what point did you realize that it was truly a jewel and legendary?
@goldsgarage8236
@goldsgarage8236 Ай бұрын
Really good point GM. Since I lost track of it for so long, I just thought of them as old cars. I thing somewhere in the 80's i realized it was special. I was still a teenager when i bought it the first time, so in a way it recaptures my youth. i think a lot of car guys have that experience. AG

Tastefully done. Many of these cars from all of the manufacturers were butchered up in the guise that "we could build them better than the factory", and many of those cars have rotted away and are rusted out basket cases. Fortunately by staying in touch with the fellow you sold this car to you were able to get it back and being older and wiser have restored this vehicle to your tastes that have come full circle with age and wiser as well. As a former street rod dude who just had to have the usual hot rod stuff, with age I have the same outlook on what is best for these older vehicles.🥸👍👍👍👍👍👍

My first car was a '75 Rally Sport i purchased from my cousin and her husband who got it from his brother. Wasn't fast but had a 4 speed manual and it would light the tires quick 😂 I was young and dumb and would smoke em at red lights just for for fun 😂I still dream about that car 😢 it was a Milwaukee Wisconsin origin car so lots of cancer all over that I had repaired but the cowl was toast too so my guess it's been crushed long ago 😢 I moved to Texas so I had to sell it but that was easy coz I was out testing it after a shift linkage adjustment and got pulled over by a cop 👮‍♂️ and he liked the car and ended up buying it 😂 probably only had 180hp maybe less but was white with a flat black hood and roof and Z28 factory mags so it stood out. Every shop I took it to get exhaust work or new tires asked if it was for sale 😂

What a beautiful car. If I would have ordered one in 1968 that's exactly what it would look like. I do like 69's too, but given the choice, I would take a 68 over a 69 any day of the week. Not trying to be rude, but I have to ask something. Why is it that Canadians call everything with the letter Z in it Zed ? I've noticed quite a few people from Canada that do that.
@mkimble21
@mkimble21 Ай бұрын
The letter Z, is only pronounced “Zee” in the United States. It comes from the Greek/Latin letter “Zeta” and became “Zed” in early English, in French it is also “zède”. It’s pronounced “Zed” in every English speaking country with the exception of, the United States.

RS is an exterior body package ( hide away headlights, chrome trim, etc ). Z28 is an engine and drivetrain package ( 302 hi performance engine , 4 speed, etc) . Someone ordered the car with both.

Insee people puttin cars around barely above idle. If they only knew the carbon build up they are causing. You have to heat the engines up to burn that carbon. I remember when the fuel hoses were long enough that you could rear either side of the car. Lol.

I’m going to tell you a Sad story,20 years ago A old man had 2z28 cars rotting away in his driveway, His son was in the vietnam war He was killed, he owned the cars, when I say these cars were in bad shape, rotting to the ground, 302. Motors were still in them, I used to drive by them going to work every day, they were sitting there 40 years , I talked to his neighbor and he told me, stay away he will shoot you, I stopped by when I seen him in his front yard , he screamed at me get the f out of here, I said I just wanted to talk to you about them, He said I don’t get lost. That’s it they rotted away, he put the motors in his basement, he filled them with concrete,intakes and all.
