First off, Villa have never won the UCL. They have won a European cup. You might be asking what the difference is, so I'll try tell you. There was no group stage, the competition starts at a round of 32. I believe participants were top two teams from the top leagues and first place teams from lesser leagues. With that said. Secondly, this European Cup can never be compared to winning the UCL. Thirdly, this caller is a moron and if you stuck rangers in the prem at the start of next season, they'd be in a relegation battle.

@@MrDominic152 It might sound weird, but I would have far more respect for a competitive Scottish Premier League without Celtic and Rangers. That two-horse race diminishes the competition in my opinion. Yes, the remaining teams might be less well financially-backed that those same two dominating teams year-in, year-out. However, at least there would likely be a bit more of fair competition in the league and you could respect the winners thereof as having done so more on merit than 'just' finance. The same applies to many other leagues also of course, including the EPL. However, the bias is usually not quite as obvious as within the SPL.

You know what annoys me the most though? They always pick an absolute belter to get on the phone lines to defend Scottish football. Never do they pick someone who’s actually reasonable and has a proper football head on them. It’s always someone who’s an absolute beaut so they can just sit back in their chairs and have an easy debate, making Scottish football look like a joke in the process. There is a difference between "bigger" and "more successful". Global fanbase would determine which club is bigger. The reach of the premier league to a global audience may put Villa ahead. However, I have seen Rangers fans all the way up to Alaska.

Im a hammers fan and I've never got the whole thought concept of the Premier league clubs being bigger than rangers and celtic. Go anywhere in the world, from London, to America to the Arctic planes. When was the last time anyone saw an Aston villa or a man utd bar?. Now ask the same question about rangers or celtic and you will find one everywhere and anywhere in the world. Even probably a crater on the moon has a hoops bar. The English Premier league are scared shitless of the thought of the old firm coming to the Premier league. They know full well that the support base is probably the biggest in the world and both would dominate providing they have the right backers. I'm off to africa next year in holiday , if anyone can find a villa pub or fanclub near Durban then please giz a shout

Are you for real? Man Utd a far far bigger worldwide. Man Utd have more fans in IRELAND than Celtic. (this is a fact look it up) Liverpool probably do too, it's close. Rangers and Celtic are only bigger in Ex Pat and Anglo/Irish communities. South America, Asia, Africa Arsenal and Premier League teams have far more support.

A well-connected friend in Melbourne informs me that former Rangers man and current Yokohama F. Marinos boss Kevin Muscat is at the top of the list to replace Steven Gerrard should the latter decide to take the reigns at Villa Park. In what capacity are Rangers bigger than Villa? Surely saying that they play in the Europa league isn't the yardstick, look at other clubs in that competition. So then what? Global Fanbase? European trophies won? A quick look at social media stats shows they're nowhere near Villa. They're huge in glasgow and known around the UK, but that's pretty much it. Reminds me of when American's say American Football is the biggest sport in the world, inside their own bubble it is, anywhere else? No.

Best way to answer the question is I would say rangers are bigger club in terms of fan base but they most likely couldn't complete with villa in terms of quality I think that's a fair assessment

I m in Overseas and here nobody knows who Aston Villa is, They think its a car when I ask them at the pub. But they know who Rangers are, coz of the Celtic Ranger history, even though they have a smaller league. Worldwide recognition difference

Ranger are the bigger club with a bigger fan base, but Villa a big club in the best league. Simple as that. Any manager managing the old firm will move to a lower club in England because simply it offers more of a challenge that was the SLP offers.

If your talking specifically about club size, fan base and all the rest of it Rangers are by far bigger it’s not a comparison. Obviously in terms of quality of player they can attract isn’t as good as they don’t have access to the tv money of the English premiership. Let’s be honest if they were both in the premiership no rangers manager would leave for Villa. I’m a Celtic fan and both rangers and Celtic are absolutely huge clubs second only to Man Utd in Britain. If there’s ever a British super league and the old firm get in, both of them would be competing for it year in year out. They generate an interest and match day revenues that most premiership clubs just don’t. That’s a fact.

You can argue who’s the bigger club all day. Their both big clubs. The real question is which job is the bigger opportunity. I would say Aston Villa is the bigger opportunity for gerrard right now.

I'm a Rangers fan mate and totally agree. if you are speaking historically then the only clubs bigger in the EPL than Rangers or Celtic are Manchester United and Liverpool. Its not only about history though, is it? Clubs like Leeds, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forrest have all Historically done well in Europe also. if you're a traditionalist then these clubs need to be brought into the conversation with the two historic big teams from each league. At the end of the day money has made the EPL the league it is and its a great thing for both England and Scotland, look at how well our national team is doing due to the influx of cash in English football. We could argue about bigger clubs all day long, the simple fact is that Villla play in a bigger, better league and all i can say is thank you Steve and good luck.
