First time viewer. Very helpful information, thoroughly delivered. A small tip for those that have yet to install straps (as you have) to avoid losing the side covers. When 1up, raise the passenger foot boards. If a cover does come loose it makes it harder for it to escape. Not an issue when 2up. I look forward to visiting Goldwing Docs.

Hi Scott - Enjoy your website and the KZfaq channel! You've probably helped out more people than half the mechanics in my state over the years. I just ordered a couple relays, one of which I hope to use as a replacement for the fuel pump on my old GL1200. I know it's not OEM, but those are running close to $100 now - if you can even get one. (I think Randakk's still has them.) For the price difference I think I can do a bit of creative engineering and relocate the thing so it's not such a pain to get to. Thanks!!

Hi Scott, I want to thank you for this video. I currently am dealing with the relay/ silonoid that deals with the starter. I started and moved the bike out from the garage , when I turned off the key the engine stopped but the starter did not, I could not get the starter to stop by turning on /off the key & kill switch so I kicked the bike in gear , that finally did it after lunching forward another 10 or so feet. I went to my goldwing docs searching & sent an email so I've purchased both silonoids & decided to have the starter over hauled/ rewired as I no longer trust it for continued use. Thx for the info both by emails & videos . I also am going to order all new replacement relays as I had my 1500 for 13 years now with no issues so far but after watching this video I think it's time to replace them. Also, one last thing, the " straps " that you have on your bike that keeps the side covers from being lost , where can I find those ? Or what do I use to make my own ? Thx for the goldwing doc videos, I go back to them often. Dennis S. Harrisonville, Mo.

The GoldWing has been my dream bike ever since the 80’s. I’ve had 3 other motorcycles over the years, just never had one that big and heavy. (My biggest was a 750 Yamaha) I’m hoping to ride it from Phoenix area to our place in northern Indiana this summer. I’m going through your videos on here and learning all you GoldWing specific tips. The two relays that run the starter are on the other side of the bike, and are known as starter relay A and starter relay B. They are different from one another, and while you could potentially carry spares, that's going to take up a bit of space, as they are much larger. You can see pictures and locations of them here: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6637#p29355

There are solid state relays with no moving parts . I have SSR’s that are from the 1970’s and they still work. SSRs are great for controlling high current loads ; back in the 1980’s in electronics school , I made a circuit that flashes a 120 volt light bulb at 15 hertz which consisted of a 555 timer set to a stable mode with a 50% duty cycle connected to the front end of the solid state relay ; they light bulb switched on and off with no issue . I have SSRs that can handle 10 amp loads , 120, 240 volt , 12, 24 volt … they are available all over the net .

You're one of the lucky ones then! I've had two relays my GL1500 fail in the last 5 years. And the fact that we've sold literally thousands of these relays (and we continue to sell hundreds every month) says that they can, and do fail fairly often.

7 of them are the same, and are the ones I have sourced. You'll see one relay in there that is blue (the rest are black) - it is different, in that it is a normally-closed relay instead of normally-open like all the rest. For whatever reason, that one blue relay rarely fails - so the demand for them is nowhere near enough for me to source them as well.

The GL1800 uses completely different (and much cheaper!) relays than the GL1500. It has two: a low beam relay and a high beam relay. If one headlight is working and the other is not, then the problem is not your relay.

Many people do buy a full set of 7 relays and change them all out: they are mechanical devices, subject to a lot of vibration, and they do wear out. Most people have one fail, then they will buy 3 or 4: one to replace the failed one, and a few to have or carry as backups.

Often your first indication that a relay has failed is when the circuit it controls stops working. Occasionally they will fail "stuck on", in which case you can give it a sharp rap with something hard to temporarily unstick it. All of the relays in the GL1500 except one are of the same type, and can be replaced with our relay!

@GoldwingDocs
@GoldwingDocs 3 жыл бұрын
A relay is a magnetically operated switch. So you can test the resistance between the output terminals when it is not powered (should be infinite) and when it is powered (should be close to zero). That said, many relays fail by sticking on, and they do so intermittently. Vibration will often break them loose, until they finally fail in a way that they will never recover.

When the contacts on high-current relays begin to wear out, your first indication is usually when they stick on. Sometimes rapping the relay with something hard (screwdriver handle, for instance) will free it, but it's only a matter of time before it happens again...and eventually it will stick permanently. If a relay has stuck on, even once, I know it's time to replace that relay, because it's on the way out. This most often happens to the high-current starter relays (starter relays A and B on the GL1500).

No, the blue relay is a different type of relay. All the black relays are "normally open" relays. The blue one is a "normally closed", so they aren't interchangeable. The blue one RARELY fails, as it's not switching the loads that the others are.

Have GL1200. Is there a way to use a relay to activate fuel pump using just ignition switch, instead of the start button? Hoping that would help starting after long periods the bike is idle.

Are all of the relays the same? If I buy one or two of your relays will that cover all of those relays under that cover? Are there others that are important to have on board that are not within that cover?.

They are all the same except for one, which you can identify because it's blue. The blue one is a normally closed relay, unlike the others, and rarely fails. All of the other relays are interchangeable.

I have a 2006 Goldwing Trike GL1800. I had backing problem, where it would only back up about 6 in at a time. Then it stopped backing up. then when i go to start it, it just clicks once. Dose that sound like a relay to you? If where would it be on a trike? My battery is where your fuse box is.

Just ordered a few. Just in case. I did have a starter relay just burn out on me on my 2000 Honda Goldwing. GL1500 Aspencade. It was showing signs off issues when I push on the starter button and nothing would happen then after a few attempts it started. Next to the battery is a round looking relay with a fuse box attached to it. two large nuts on top connect positive red wires. The fuse box has a burn mark on it. I have lost all power to lights, instrument panel, radio, cb and everything under the sun. I put a screw driver across the two terminals and the bike kicks over but wont start. I found the relay on amazon I ordered. Not sure if you have a video on this issue but I hear its common with older bikes. I called several shops in south west michigan in attempts to have them look at my bike and no one will touch a bike older than 15 years old. Love this bike but starting to regret buying a bike no one is willing to work on and no replacement parts are available after market for it.

I have a 2003 GL 1800 that ran fine all summer, fall and early winter. Just before Christmas I tried to take it out since the weather was nice, which was only a couple of weeks after the last ride, and NOTHING. I am new to this and I know the battery was replaced when I bought it in June. When I turn the key on, it lights up, radio comes on, but still nothing. I will point out that when I hit the starter, the headlight dims. I haven't checked the relays and/or fuses, but that is my next step in my opinion. Have you seen this situation before? If so, what was the solution?

I am curious, if you add a couple of led lights, phone chargers, trailer hook up, do you need to use a relay or can you hook up directly to the battery. i saw a video where a guy added fuse box on his bike and the hook up he bought came already connected to a relay. tx again. Love all your vids.

In a lot of cases, yes. There are differences (valves, carburetors, U-joint), apart from the obvious differences, but there are a LOT of parts and systems in common.

Hi Scott, a while back i ordered some of the relays that were offered on your site but when they were delivered i found that they are 40 amp and my 1500 has 30 amp relays, are the 40 amp relays going to be safe to run in my 1500 SE ? Sincerely William
@GoldwingDocs
@GoldwingDocs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi William! Yes, that is the rated capacity of the relay. The factory GL1500 relays are 20 and 30 amp, but they fail (obviously) after a number of years. We decided to source a relay capable of handling 40 amps. It will never see that much current in the GL1500, but it means that the contacts and conductors inside the relay are much beefier (capable of handling up to 40 amps) - and wear out much more slowly as a result. Think of it as putting a garden hose amount of water through a four-inch pipe. It can easily handle the current (of the water) going through it. Apparently this was a good decision, as in all the years we have been selling these relays, we've never heard of one failing. I'd encourage you to read part one of our Electricity series here: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19501

All of the relays save for one are exactly the same on the GL1500, so they are interchangeable. The GL1800 uses completely different relays, not compatible with these. The relays we sell are rated at twice the amps (40 amps vs 20 amps) than the OEM relays.

On the 1500 all the relays are the same except for the blue one, which is a NC (normally closed) instead of an NO (normally open) relay. You can use our replacement relays for all except that blue one.
