Let's put a new waterproof lithium battery in this old Golf Cart.
This is a 2003 Club Car Golf Cart that came with a 48V lead acid battery. We are swapping out the old lead acid batteries for a new 48V (51.2V) Lithium. The battery is a 100 Ah, 5.12kWh, LiFePO4, sold by Signature Solar under the brand EG4. The type we are using is waterproof.

I help my in-laws upgrade their backup sump pump battery to a Chins 12V 100Ah LiFEPO4 battery. They ran their pump on it for 4 days and it still had a lot of juice in the battery. Their old lead acid would only last an hour or two. A new lead acid would have lasted longer but LiFEPO4 was the way to go since it will perform for years to come.

In all likelihood that golf cart has an electronic motor controller which means that the maximum power draw from the battery occurs at a higher speed than zero. Specifically the speed where the controller is no longer stepping down the voltage (and stepping up the current) to the motor, and instead has the motor across the line. It would be interesting to put your peak recording ammeter on there and do a standing start to full speed run, and see what current reading you get. Then put the ammeter on the line to the motor, and you'll see a much higher reading when the controller is dropping the voltage and raising the current.

Interesting conversion and after watching this video I did look in to the signature solar battery, but for my cart it is a 36 volt and the BMS in the 36 volt battery has a much lower discharge amp rating than the 48 volt and I am not sure it will work for me. The 36 volt EG4 WP only has a 102 Amp discharge for 10 sec and the 48 volt is rated at 150 amps my concern is the BMS may trigger under a heavy load, my cart is a stock cart but finding the amp dray for a stock cart is pretty hard to find online.

LFP is a really smart choice. LFPs are way safer as far as thermal runaway (fire) goes. You're safer than a gas vehicle by far. Because the amps don't vary as much with LFP vs standard Lithium Ion, the system will not be able to read remaining range as accurately unless you charge the battery to 100% at least once a week to give it a starting point to accurately measure. I wouldn't leave it at 100%, but charging up to that before use is great. For the most part keeping it between 50% and 80% for most of it's life is optimal. It's also good to run it down almost empty now and then before charging to 100%. Love the video. Great upgrade

You should test with two people on a hill. Most carts have series wound motors and will pull more amps trying to do the work of a hill than just punching it and taking off. My stock 36v pulls about 150 amps on a hill with two people. This not just a surge but continuous at it is climbing a steep hill.

Has any one made the switch of batteries on a older electric zero turn mowers sold at the big box stores. The ion batteries last about four years. With the four 12v 100 AH batteries connected in series new I was getting one hour thirty minutes per charge. Last year I was lucky to get thirty minutes. The company changed its new models to Lithium batteries, so support over the next couple years is maintance going to be suspect. The meter is a little flaky but I am happy with the unit. I have about two and half areas to cut and need at lest two hour run time. I am looking for a solution so I am not buying new batteries every four years. thanks for a great video.

Poz, what solar charging kit can you recommend for a club car with 6, 8V battery set up? Thanx!
@DavidPozEnergy
@DavidPozEnergy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Col Jr. For solar charging a golf cart I recommend using one large solar panel (anything you can get locally, around 300-400 Watts) plus a solar BOOST controller. I like this controller: amzn.to/3y82wvf (Amazon Affiliate Link). These large solar panels will usually have a Vmp (volts at Maximum Power) of 35-45V. But, a 48V battery will be charged around 54-58V (depending on chemistry). So you need a charge controller that can boost the voltage up.

Sure. You can build your own pack. Here is an option: batteryhookup.com/products/new-4-pack-eve-3-2v-75ah-240wh-lifepo4 Buy 3 packs, there are 4 cells in each pack so that will give you a total of 12 cells. Arrange 12 in series to make 36V. Add a BMS like this: batteryhookup.com/collections/accessories/products/12v-lifepo4-smart-bms-w-low-temp-cutoff?variant=36287974736034 You will need to make the housing to hold everything together, but it will come out less expensive. Sure, if it's 48V it would work. However, the LSV, or NEV (neighborhood electric vehicles) tend to be a little heavier and come with a little larger motor, so the Amp draw is going to be more. I'll be you will need 2+ batteries to handle the Amp draw

Thank you! I will probably have to get another motor for mine as it's the old club car DS series motor. I think it might do 12 mph. My controller is a 225 amps. I'm going a golf cart to LSV conversion so I can drive it in downtown Tampa. To be legal it has to be capable of minimum 20 mph to a maximum of 25 mph. So I certainly won't be getting any crazy type motor and will keep my controller I have now. I hope to have some fun with this. I like that the company is in the USA and they are very competitive on price.

Dr Poz…. You briefly touched on a very critical point and I am hoping that we can go back a examine the issue. MAXIMUM Battery Transient Current ! The battery in this video is claimed to have a maximum Discharge Current of 100 amps…but you also mentioned that “ on initial acceleration or start up “ ( rapid change from zero mph to ten mph ( example)) “ The Inflow Current could be much higher”. Would two 100 amp battery packs in parallel better tolerate a 200 amp discharge ? Or… a better example for many people considering upgrading to LiFePo…. I have a 48 volt golf cart with a higher performance ( Plum Quik) DC electric motor and a controller that is rated at 400 amps. Would “ Paralleling” battery packs EACH WITH THEIR OWN BMS…. Be a way to share the amp load stress across multiple battery banks? Might two battery packs , each rated at 200 amp discharge, configured in parallel, better handle my above described motor and controller?..and reduce stress on the two BMS systems ? I have been getting “ push back” from some golf cart battery suppliers when I describe my cart configuration. They state that “ their batteries or BMSs may not handle the electrical loads. …hence my thoughts that paralleling with multiple battery packs/ banks would “ share” / spread out the amp load stress. Thank you so very much for sharing your opinions. Let us all accept that David’s opinions while founded in SOME experience, May not be based on extensive testing per the posed questions… and that we should only CONSIDER David’s responses as “ educated guesses”… NOT professional statements. Is this also going to be an issue with converting to A/C motors ?
@DavidPozEnergy
@DavidPozEnergy Жыл бұрын
yes, you can parallel 2 batteries for a theoretical 200A continuous discharge (assuming 100A per battery). however, there are always very slight differences between one battery and the next. So, one might have slightly higher IR (internal resistance) than another. The difference is so slight you won't notice it unless you have a 4-wire IR tester. In application, this means that you won't see the full 200A potential. You might see 100A from battery A, and 90A from battery B. Still a lot more than 1 battery alone, but not exactly double the Amps with two batteries. I have tested this exact thing at home pulling maximum Amps from paralleled batteries in my server rack. Another option is to build your own battery pack with a BMS (battery management system) and cells capable of handling the currents you want.
@beldre1
@beldre1 Жыл бұрын
I run 4 of these in a polaris ranger ev. It can pull over 600 amps. I pull trailers full of wood and a 1600 pound log splitter around with two people and stuff in the back. Two of these would give you about 300 amps of brief discharge (not gonna handle 400 amps ever though). I would try to program your controller for 300 amps max and go for two batteries. You can always try it first with just two batteries. If your not loaded down too much you may not get to the 400 amps your motor is rated for. If you max the draw they shut down and reset automatically in 30 seconds.

@@beldre1Thanks for your comment. I have a Ranger and am considering these batteries. Would you be willing to visit about your setup?

Why did your clamp meter say AC when you were doing the tests? The battery is DC current. 6:37 even shows the meter switch in the wrong setting.

The manual says to set it there for "inrush" for both AC or DC.

@@DavidPozEnergy Now that is weird. Wonder why they even bother with having a DC setting then?

This battery was the first Version of the EG4, Waterproof. It has a 100A BMS inside. We did find that on certain runs (like up long hills, fully loaded) we exceeded the BMS and the battery shut off. Signature Solar heard us, and these are now being sold with 200A BMS's inside. I suspect the new version won't have the same issue, but I haven't been able to test the new version. signaturesolar.com/eg4-wp-lithium-battery-48v-100ah?ref=4_rHcgZ9x-TiF-

@@DavidPozEnergy sorry I ordered the battery before I saw your link you sent me. Yes as soon as I saw it was a 200-amp and I think it was 345 peak or something like that I pulled the trigger right away and bought it. Really appreciate your video thank you
