Let me know what kind of batteries you prefer and why. I thought of one more pro for each type of battery that I didn't mention in the video. Lithium ion Pro: Lithium ion batteries weigh significantly less than lead acid, so the lighter weight helps with golf cart acceleration. The weight of lead acid is like carrying a couple extra people on your golf cart. Lead acid Pro: If you run the batteries all the way down, lead acid slows down gradually rather than abruptly. In a golf cart, this usually gives the drive enough juice to get home. Lithium ions are ruined (terminals lose polarity) if they are run down all the way, so they have a computer onboard that protects the battery from allowing this to happen. As a result, when the batteries get very low on charge, the computer shuts the batteries down and your golf cart dies abruptly. I hope this video and these insights help you make a good decision!

Another benefit to lithium ion is if you leave the golf cart for months at a time (vacation home)you don’t have to do much. Lead acid you have to make sure the batteries get watered and charged. At least this is what a few people have told me. Do you agree? We just purchased a winter home in Arizona and will only be here for 3-4 months.

I absolutely agree with that statement. I actually had a switch installed on my golf cart that automatically disconnects the cart (closes the circuit) from the battery after a few hours. This way we can go away and the cart isn't drawing any power from the lithiums. The batteries sit there fully charged, and I unplug the cart. The longest I was away was 3 weeks, and came home to 100% charge. I just press a button under the dash, and it re-engages the cart with the battery.

I loved the concept of lithium batteries. When I bought a used cart two years ago, I decided to have it remade for a new century. New paint, suspension, top, seats. The works. I decided to go with Lithium for the batteries. Knocked 300 pounds off the cart's weight. Plenty of range. Charged fast, usually 2-4 hours. They were great....until I went to get my cart out of storage earlier this month. I've taken care of these batteries exactly as recommended and so has the man who stores my cart. He's in the golf cart business. They aren't charging back up properly. So basically I spent 2.5 times what lead would have cost and I'm getting maybe 1/4 of the life. Be warned, Allied sells a trash product and they don't stand behind it. They're a total scam. As a side note, the golf cart guy is getting out of lithium altogether. I was his first customer to try them, and after apparent success, he started installing and selling them with the idea that he'd convert his whole rental fleet. He changed his mind this spring when one of the lithium carts caught fire and exploded while charging and burned down a good part of his business and several other carts! I'm not dead set against the technology. If he can scavenge a working set for me from among his collection of lithiums he wants to be rid of, I might go with them, but I'm sure as hell not going to pay $3,000 or more for a set that's going to last me maybe a year or two. On paper, lithium is awesome technology. In the real word so far, I've experienced zero benefit.

Yikes! Thanks for sharing your personal experience. I have heard of lithium battery fires before, but have never known anyone who experienced it. My cart is always drawing a little current even if the key is turned off, so there's a safety feature that activates after two hours. The power to the cart is completely cut off and when I'm ready to use the cart, I have to press a button to reactivate the battery. This has allowed us to go away for two weeks without the cart plugged in and the batteries still had a 95% charge when we got home. Good luck to you! Nothing wrong with sticking to lead acid.

@@HandzforHire Lithium is one of those technologies I really wanted to believe in because it holds so much promise. At the same time, it's been my instinct not to be the first wave adopter, or even second wave of any new technology, and this situation just confirms my instinct.

Great Video, I guess at my older age, my trojons should last me 3-5 years, at 1000.00, or 3000.00 for maybe 15 years for the Lithium Being old the math makes sense for me to stick with Trojon and replace them every 5 years.. if i make it: )

I see all these videos talking about how the Lithium give more power, very misleading. Especially as some of these are being sold with a low power BMS which limits the power available to the controller. However assuming you have at least a 300A BMS (more if you’re running a performance cart) following are my thoughts. Better acceleration, yes. It’s lighter. Better top speed, yes, a little. But this is due to the lithium batteries holding a slightly higher voltage nothing else. Range? If a set of lead acid batteries are rated at 48V 160A/hr and you only discharge to 50%, effectively you have an 80 A/hr set. So to get more Range your Lithium pack, which can typically discharge to 95%, will have to be greater than 80A/Hr

Great question and yes I did. The chargers are generally different but some have different modes and can be used for both. Lead acid batteries use a constant voltage charger and as the batteries get more full of charge, the electrons face more resistance, so the current slows down. Lithium chargers however are able to deliver more power to lithium batteries without risk of overcharging so they charge faster than lead acid batteries.

Any concerns of the flammable aspect of lithium batteries. In PV all the lithium carts burn down homes. What facts or knowledge do you have on this aspect? Thanks

I live in the hills. Is the lithium ion battery carts more powerful going uphill? Does it have more torque?

Great question! More charge can be delivered from the second you step on the pedal. This causes a greater acceleration, leading to more work, and greater power. I'm not sure that it adds more torque though without adding a gearbox (dc motor) or making some physical adjustments to the internal rotor resistance, external rotor resistance, or adding variable voltage or frequency. I do think it has more power though so would do a little better going up a hill. I hope that helps!

The Lithium BMS restricts the amount of current, unlike Lead Acid, and therefore power. So it depends on the BMS. Most performance controllers now have a lithium battery saver setting where you can limit the max current being drawn, kind of defeating the point of installing a 609A controller

Better off installing a performance controller. If you have an EZGO 48V PDS or RXV the stock controller can be unlocked to go into Freedom mode, which gives you, depending on tire size, up to 7mph more and more power (current delivery)

The technology is well and truly here to electrify golf carts it’s a no brainer but in saying that I like how most of the companies are still trying to make it an extra so they can charge more 🙄 there just milking it as long as they can .

Any advantages to not charging to 100 % ? Tesla seems to state normally charge to 80% is better on battery life.

I think for lithium ion batteries it doesn't matter too much. You can leave lithium batteries uncharged or charge and it shouldn't impact the life of the battery. Lead acids are a different story. They should be fully charged once a day, but it's better to drain and discharge them before fully charging them. Which type of batteries are you using?
