Practicing by getting stationary at the impact position is a great help. As you say, reverse engineering helps you get the body in position to respond and correctly execute. BIG HELP is keeping the right arm slightly bent on the downswing. That really necessitates rotating the hips instead of swinging with shoulders and arms. This teaching, alone will get the hands slightly ahead of the ball at impact resulting in the release of the arms and wrists at impact......and not before. Amazing how much more solid contact is when you do this.

This is really excellent instruction and information. I believe if people, including myself, were made to do this drill at the outset when learning this game, then there would be far more better golfers out there. This exercise is invaluable. Are there better instructors out there that have the ability to demonstrate and who are verbally able to get this instruction across to us - I doubt it very much. Eric, many thanks for all you give to us.

@@CogornoGolf Eric, I did take the liberty of texting the Golf Channel. I said that I was sure they were already aware of you, but as a big fan of yours and the Golf Channel, I saw a great match for current or future programming. I told them, and I believe, that serious golfers would flock to any show of yours on that network. I'll let you know if I get a response -- but at least, hopefully, they're listening. Bob

Good explanation! Some years ago, a trainer I had often told me to keep my head at about the same level through the swing. And I did went lower with my head and chest in the downswing. So I got to use drills that forced me to feel that my upper body moved away from the ground. At that time, and even sometimes now, I also struggled with some early extension. But is that why I was told to feel like I described above? Got a little confused there! 🤷‍♂️
@CogornoGolf

Upper body away from the ground during the downswing is a bad, bad, bad idea for most all people. Of course I would have to see your swing to say for sure what you should or shouldn't be doing. As you saw in the video...do the players get lower or higher? Thats what I base my answer on.

My favorite part of your instruction is that you don't oversell the distance/power thing LIKE THE REST OF THE INDUSTRY. I am very tall and long, yet since the first time I played (1972), there have been many older and shorter men and women who crushed me because they were superior ball strikers and hit the ball STRAIGHTER. Thanks Eric.

Nearly TOO brilliant .... 2 things i noticed in all this ...#1- the top of their back bents a lot at impact or just before AND at impact AND doing so their head and top of their body has moved slightly more over the ball then at setup. #2- In doing so the club gets more in extension of the leading arm position... = the degree of arms & shaft at setup has straighten up. Hope is all good mentioning this ... feel it's important so people wont keep that degree and totally miss/shank the ball ;) Love ALL ur content ... you and Ryan = KINGS .... Cheers... Iceland :)

A question: at the address, if the hands/handle are closer to the body and more aligned with the vertical line under the chin, would it help to get to the impact position desired afterwards? I found whenever I stick my hands too much out at address, the less chance I got a good impact.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is a 1-1 correlation between those two things. I see where the arms hang at address have more of a direct effect on the hand path during the backswing, but no guarantees there as to what leads to impact position. Too many variables. But if you do that and it helps then I would investigate it via video and find out why and keep doing it :)

Eric I realize that if I close the club face at address then to square the club face at impact my right elbow needs to be bent and against my right side. The brain a supercomputer will need to make the adjustment to in order square the club face.

Looking at the pros setup to impact photos, I'm noticing that their head does dip a little but the top of the spine stays about in the same position. So is the right arm bend because they are closer to the ball or simply because their right shoulder has rotated down and there is less room?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 жыл бұрын

It seems to me then that you could get into the proper impact position most simply by concentrating on where your right elbow should be at impact. Certainly would reduce the number of swing thoughts...

As a golf aficionado and as a medical doctor, I have a couple of remarks here to say: 1) the more the impact position differs from the setup position, the more that swing requires hours and hours of training and practice in order to become consistent (reproducibility of the movements and low chance of mistakes): which is not something that most amateurs can afford... 2) the more the impact position differs from the setup position, and the swing has the shape shown in the videos (especially remarkable, among the others, are the 'body contorsions' of Dustin Johnson and Fleetwood), the more there's a risk of causing lesions in the long run (in the spine, hips, shoulders, knees): which is something else all golfers (but amateurs in particular) should abstain from. In conclusion I'm here to ask pros: are you sure that a professional swing can and should be taught to amateurs, especially to amateurs who are 45y or older? Or a more 'simplified' swing should be a better option...?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Roberto! I'm always looking to learn! Can you please show me some evidence of good players who DO NOT have a different impact than setup who are any good? I have been looking at swings for about 15 years and I have never seen that.
@robertorovida2108

Eric Cogorno Golf Dear Eric, thank you for your prompt answer (which shows commendable commitment) and the chance that you give me for further discussion of the topic (which shows your open mind). We all know, as a matter of fact, that the 'natural' golf swing implies that the impact position has to be different from the setup position, at least if you want to shoot the ball with acceptable distance. So, in a natural golf swing, the uncoiling movement of the body, during the downswing, also needs to include some lags between the body sections in order to increase the rotational speed and allow a good distance. This high-speed unwinding, with lags, leads the golfer to execute the downswing on a different plane than the backswing and assume (when seen frontally) sort of an 'inverted K' shape at impact, as it is well shown in the picture on page 103 of Ben Hogan's Five Lessons. So it is true that the natural golf shot is like the above, but the points to be considered are: - although it is an old technique (because the golf natural swing has always had some lag and some inverted K posture at impact), in recent years that technique has been taken to the extreme (more lag, more hip and spine 'contorsions', also leading to more injuries) by the professional golfers, in search for longer and longer shots; - this technique can enhance the length of a shot, but it has nothing to do with its good direction; on the contrary it often creates directional problems to an amateur, because the marked difference in the plane and arc of the downswing, with respect to the backswing, is more difficult to learn and master (more variables are in play) and mistakes become more likely. Nowadays all the professional golfers are chasing the extremes of this technique, because all players want to keep up with the highest reachable level. In the past there were even high-level players who used less extreme techniques but still were winners of US opens or PGA tour. I have in mind Julius Boros for example: you can watch an analysis of his swing on KZfaq kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y96gmdJyl6rVXZc.html. There is still a difference between the impact and the setup position (or it would not be Golf...), but without the extremes that are seen in today's professionals. In Boros's swing you can also appreciate a footwork and heelwork that accompany the body torsion, allowing for more rotational speed but less strain on muscles and joints. Isn't that an amateur golfer would not desire to have the same ability of a Julius Boros? And use a swing in which the arc and plane of backswing and downswing are a bit closer, with fewer variables in play, for higher-percentage shots? Sincerely I dare say that an amateur golfer, especially if not young, should be contented with a more simplified swing.
