I agree with what you said at 6:15 and it is NOT what is typically taught. If you measured the angle created at address of the upper femur through the knee and into the lower leg. When you turn the hip deeply that angle tends to straighten. It's obvious when watching the classic swings. The hip moves back and forward, thereby, lessening the amount of bend. I think we started this whit the X Factor which encouraged little hip turn and lots of upper body turn. That teaching created a whole generation of mid handicap golfers who were over the top as soon as the started to transition weight forward or Left.

In the step drill, trying to keep your back to the target as you step really helps with sequencing.

I have been following Clay Ballard, Steven Johnston, Rick Shiels and Tom Saguto (kind of a goofball) as well as your channel. I find you to be the most in depth and articulate (I’m a rather cognitive type) in your methods and seem more aligned to my way of thinking /learning therefore I’ve decided that “you da man” Lol. I’m gonna follow you to wherever my golf game takes me. So, if I don’t improve I blame you (just kidding). Thank you for all of your great work and your love of the game. The amateur golf world owes you a debt of gratitude in my opinion. All the best my friend!

Hi Russ, Great video on a very important fundamental aspect of the golf swing often explored but seldom explained. . You start by emphasizing reestablishing lead shoulder over lead ankle during transition. To me this objective (lead shoulder over lead ankle) as a direct result is /can be very difficult for someone like me to achieve directly from the top. Rather this position is a byproduct of what goes on before. Pushing back lead hip in such a manner that the two hips form a line parallel to target line keeping majority of weight/pressure still on trail foot is what the transition is all about. What is missing for me in your excellent video is that at the very same time you do this, you must also side crunch to the right while keeping the right thigh outward facing. In a sense during the transition my right shoulder moves down and out in a way that seems to track the club head as it shallows out and down as you get into the slot to slam the ball moving the weight/pressure onto the lead leg as one hits the ball and of course keeping the head back. Golf instruction certainly has changed! When I was learning decades ago all I heard were ancient bromides like, “Keep your head down,” “Keep your left arm straight,” “Go back slow,” “Slide your hips forward,” and the worst of all, “Flip your hands over hard at the ball.” Biomechanics? Huh? Pressure? What’s that? Long hitters are born, not made. Really? As I reach age 50 I realize I’ve been playing wrong for many decades. The only reasons I score well are (1) good hand-eye coordination which allows me to “save” full shots at impact and (2) a good short game. None of the actual biophysical principles elucidated on this fine channel are present in my current motion. Therefore I am taking a complete wrecking ball to my old swing and rebuilding it from the ground up. It’s not really a choice, is it? Anything worth doing is worth doing properly. Thank you, Russell. You’ve opened my eyes to some issues I was stubbornly unwilling to confront. It’s time to put in the work again and get sore and tired again. However, as one of my favorite math - I think you say “maths” in the UK - professors once said, “Learning takes place in the struggle.”

So are we looking at internal rotation of the right hip into the right leg on the backswing?
@CanadaSnowman
@CanadaSnowman 4 жыл бұрын
Russel first of all thanks for your efforts on this channel. I am hitting the ball much better as a result of your coaching. The one area I'm confused about relates to your lesson today. I will spin out from time to time pulling the ball. I would think that if I increase my turn in the backswing it would increase the likelihood of more spinning out unless I resist turning my forward hip too quickly. Is this a timing issue with the forward turn??
@russellheritagegolf
@russellheritagegolf 4 жыл бұрын
No I would have thought that the better your rotation in the backswing would reduce this. Or you could work on more linear motion to stop this?!
@CanadaSnowman
@CanadaSnowman 4 жыл бұрын
@@russellheritagegolf Russell I think I figured out my problem. Rather than turning the pelvis into the back leg with some resistance I was attempting to swivel (twist) more and as a result on the forward swing was doing the same swivel and spinning out. Also with the pelvis turn into the back leg I now am feeling the ground pressure which I wasn't before. Again thanks - putting all elements of your teaching to work solves many problems.

Thanks Russel, these are great. know I have trouble in transition, since I feel blocked setting up with club behind the ball, but a don't feel blocked if I bring the club up to a baseball swing. Sometimes I can get that natural unblocked feeling striking the ball of I take a few baseball swings, then set up as a baseball swing but bring the downswing to the ball, any fixes you know of for this blocked feeling I have? An observation nothing to do with my question; in this drill, both you and George are stepping into a slightly open stance, but set up for George' actual swing is square. Some pros set up closed, some open, some square, as I said, an observation Thanks again both you Russel, and George I

I think stance is relative to low point but will save this for another video at another time. Maybe start with the club head further behind the ball to help eradicate the blocked feelings

Hi Russell. Is there such as thing as over rotating the right hip in the backswing? We only have a couple of tenths of a second to complete the swing so I’m thinking that the further you rotate your right hip, the less likely it is you’ll have time to get it back into position on the downswing and finish
@russellheritagegolf
@russellheritagegolf 4 жыл бұрын
Not really. You can over rotate in the backswing but it’s the right legs job to resist

Russell, Would these principles demonstrated be for all age golfers and just applied with less width and lift of arms i.e. within my senior body limitations (fairly flexable)200lb 5-11 compared to you and your aspiring pro? So far I am improving greatly with understanding your principles and dynamics of a sound application of the iron golf clubs (140yd 7ir) but Driver club yet to improve much on distance (190,- 210) yds on normal roll . Maybe I have too high of expections . Does a long driver inhibit amateurs Thanks for your high degree of golf knowledge as I continue with drills.

Russell is by far one of the better online golf coaches and I watch him often to help me rebuild my swing....however in this video has to much information that is presented in a very scattered way that does not simplify the transition sequence....there is only the correct sequence in the golf swing....all others are per each individual....not helpful for me....even though I appreciate his work in other videos...
