Tremendous amount of information in this video. I’m at a point where I can absorb it. If I had seen this 20 years ago, I’d have been mentally paralyzed. Now I can take this to the range and hopefully begin to put all the pieces together.

Can't thank you enough for this Russell. I've heard about width over and over again and always tried to achieve what I thought it was. The laser visualization, however is truly the ah ha realization for me to get my hands away from the body and leading through the zone allowing me the room i needed to rotate. I can't believe the instant change in my sing and ball striking. Easily the most important swing feel I have ever experienced. I'm spreading the word to all my golf buddies and we will all be going low in 2022!

Best video I've ever seen on this. Thanks Russell! I came to this video looking for a cure to the shanks. I was shanking the ball with the right forearm to the sky position on the downswing that you demonstrate. I'm definitely a person that would have the laser pen light outside of the line. Basically what you show in 21:30 to 21:40 with your wrists, fixes that for me. I needed the ulnar deviation motion, not just the left wrist bowing. Best ball striking with accuracy, ever since, shanks gone!!! Can't thank you enough!

This is Gold, As I look at your hands at impact I can clearly see they are moving on impact slightly to the left, this is what I have been getting wrong for years, I have been throwing my hands out at the ball or hands straight to target, I have just used this for the last 2 hours It has worked a treat, also getting a totally clean sound off the face of the club, never really had that continually on every hit till now. Thanks Russell.

Great reminder! My swing has struggled over the past month and after watching this and executing on the range I was hitting cleaner crisper shots!! If I hit a bad shot I instantly knew where I had failed. The key thing for me was the width in the swing I had stopped doing. Need that as much as proper hand position.

There used to be a 5-iron for sale as a training aid that had a laser pointing out of each end of the shaft - brilliant. The ideal swing had one or other laser pointing along the target line throughout the swing. Some people say there are no straight lines in golf - but there are, as you demonstrate.

I read some of the comments below but none captured exactly what I wanted to say. I have read books, watched videos and read magazine articles and they all talk about the plane. I have also toyed with using the shaft of the club as a reference but both concepts never came together until now. I love to get technical as long as the technical aspects can be brought down to a practical level. Russell you have finally given me a way to keep the club on plane while maintaining width through impact. Now it is time to try and master what you have given me. I will keep you updated as I proceed through this journey.

I've spent years trying to get my swing as good as I can get it. I early extend, get my right arm behind me and flip at it. Ive tried things such as lowering my body closer to the ball, maintaining wrist angles, turning my body more, etc, but it never worked out and I gave up on changing several times. Although I'm practicing things that are technically correct, my body angles just weren't allowing these motions to happen and was basically forcing my body to do motions that weren't natural, like driving a car and immediately making a sharp turn without slowing down. You're the first person I've seen that has explained why these motions aren't working and how to naturally get into these positions without forcing it. Every video of yours I watch is eye opening, and I've seen my fair share of instructional videos. You make the thought of golf more fun again instead of frustrating and anxious, so thank you.

This is fantastic content, one of the best vids I've seen on fixing the scoopy hand action. My question to go along with this is, that most of the people I see that scoop also tend to have their hips square to the ball at impact, what are the reasons for this lack of rotation in the lower body? Cheers!

The emphasis on “hands” in the title made question if I wanted to view this, but the 23 minute length indicated to me that there must be more. I don’t know if Russell is a genius at teaching or whether he’s facilitated my bringing together a lot of disparate knowledge about the swing into a more cohesive understanding. I am a golfer who has always tended to be “all arms” and would forget sometimes to turn my torso resulting in lack of power and distance and erratic accuracy. I had a laser years ago marketed by David Leadbetter but despite following the instructions, I couldn’t grasp the concept. This video has really helped me. Russell talks about hands being here or there. Unfortunately for me that creates an image of active hands DOING something in the downswing. It has finally dawned on me that the arms and hands are quiet in the downswing until the club head approaches the ball. It’s the torso rotation that brings the arms along for the ride through most of the swing. It’s the rotation stupid (me not you)!

@colingardiner7352
@colingardiner7352 3 жыл бұрын
Check out AMG video on arms and hands too Robert. Not wanting to confuse you but they demonstrate the active use of the arms and hands throughout the swing. Letting the arms come along for the ride can mean getting stuck which this video also demonstrates. Hands, arms and body must all work together to really deliver the best delivery at impact. As Richard mentions, your wrist position at the top is not crucial but the body, arms and hands must all work together to bring the club back in front of you before last parallel to deliver the club squarely and powerfully at impact with your wrists (and hands) leading the club at impact. When it works, it feels great, doing it consistently is the really hard part! If only I had the time (and ability!!)

I think this was generally great. For me though as a VERY right handed person (I bet there are more of us), the last part with the left hand control will just never work. I essentially hit the ball with my right hand and the left is just trying to get along with some minor guiding role (I hit almost as long and straight when I only use the right hand). Therefore , for me, the movement needs to be explained in terms of what the right hand should do.

This is very helpful. I intentionally try to avoid rotating my wrists, which means the back of my lead wrist orientation remains square to the target. I realized as I start the down swing with a slight lead hip bump which causes me to drop the club on plane, it causes the lead wrist to have a slight open orientation to the target line. If I don’t slightly rotate the wrists through impact it will leave the face open to the target line. I think this explains my propensity to have pushes and or slight slice to my drives. Of course if I inadvertently rotate my wrist on the back swing the result is a wicked slice. Thanks for this video.

Loved this video Russ. I have always been a right hand oriented golfer where my right wrist was in control at impact. Used a laser pen and saw that it pointed too far away from the ball at the impact position. When I focused on moving my left wrist as you demonstrated in this video (at club shaft back to // in downswing) not only was I on plane but also had the laser pen pointing right over the ball at impact. Wow - this was a eye opener. Will take it to the range tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Russell, great video! This topic is what I keep searching for. Could you please enlighten how this rotation of the hands/forearm wrist to square clubface is different from a flip (not scoop). And secondly but perhaps more important is how does the hands move after impact to say shaft parallel to the ground? So that we get flow and speed through the ball. Much appreciated thanks! P.s. I see the impact snap training aid on your shelf was thinking you'd use it in this vid.

Love the video Russ and you really helped articulate what I asked you a few videos back (I'm sure you made this video specifically for me 😁). I was always under the impression we locked our wrists in place at the top of the back swing and held them all the way thru impact using our body\shoulder rotation so knowing I need to feel that bit of release\uncocking after the club is parallel to target is helpful. Looking forward to practicing on the range this week. Torrey Pines South Course on Saturday...gonna be going low!

Russ - just took this to the range and the results were so awesome. Started with half swings to get good contact and the ball was screaming off the face and going dead straight. The hardest part for me was realizing how far I had to feel my hands passing the ball while keeping the club head behind me and not letting my hands flick it around (if that makes sense). So excited to keep working on this feeling of club parallel to target line and moving hands ahead of the ball. Thanks again!

Thanks for this very explanatory video. It is the first time in many years of struggle that someone explained the plane to me in an understandable and concrete way. I have a question though. You talk about that it's not so important that the shaft at the top of the backswing or in the beginning of the downswing points outside the target line. Earlier you mention that the objective is to get the shaft to point at the target line throughout the swing. It seems to me that it would be much easier strive for the latter, or?
