I stumbled on this video at random the other day. It addresses what I have been struggling with forever early extension and standing up in the swing. I had tried everything. Nothing really worked. I tried this drill in the same way it is presented here on the range. Holy @#$%!! This worked for me immediately! After only about 30 swings I went out and played using it. Holy #!$%&!! I hit it SO much better! It was almost shocking! I did the drill before each swing. It was crazy the difference. Later I video'd my swing in the down-the-line view. Suddenly I noted the club emerging at or below my forward shoulder in the through swing instead of next to my cheek every time and my I maintained my posture much better. Never saw THAT before!! It looked so much better and I could definitely feel the difference in my swing right away. For the first time I was actually swinging around my body and not trying to force the club to swing straight down the target line. During Masters week I noticed ALL those guys swing this way. Watch their practice swings. You'll see it. Everyone should take a hard look at this drill.

This is truly transformative. I just came back from the range where I hit about 90% of my irons and woods with solid contact and maybe 80% were dead straight as aimed. Even the ones offline were just pushed/pulled a bit with no sidespin...a huge improvement from my usual slicey swing. I'm 71 and I've only been golfing for about a year.

Eric, I really appreciate this lesson. In fact, I bought a "Hanger" because you recommended it and because you posted this view from above lesson. Feel good about your work. I have tried swinging more around my body rather than up for one season and it helped. Now, I'm going to practice two swings: the around the body shoulder to shoulder swing & the hocky slap shot swing. Just to validate those two suggestions of yours, I'll state that I can only go deep enough with my backswing if I keep my hands low and go around as much as I can before I go up. Moreover, I adjust the grip of my right hand at the top so that my right palm points up while my right elbow points down. I do hit the ball further & I tend to hit it straight. Thank you, Eric. I'm saving this video to my favorites.

Hi Eric, Great video I use to have a proper swing, I use to swing more around my body. Now its more too vertical, and now I have developed a slice, snap hooks, shanks and my contacts are inconsistent ( this has been going on now for 4 months). I have lost confidence in my swing. I use to have a draw. I watched a bad gold video which said it would help increase your power and consistency. This tip has destroyed my swing, now its had to change and revert back to my old swing. So yes I will try this drill and rediscover my old swing. So Eric, thank you for pointing this flaw in my swing. Great channel. Michael

That is exactly the feel I try and achieve every time. It’s an off shoot of another tip that you gave where you want the player to just swing to the finish, just get to your finish position, and the feel that helps me do that is to feel like I’m swinging around my body and get to that finish position. This is a drill and feel where you get a lot of things for free 💪

Hi Eric. As usual great video and, I’ve bought a Hanger training aid. I love you mate and love your stuff. HOWEVER, I’ve noticed a couple of American coaches use the proof pudding” phrase. It’s actually proof of the pudding is in the eating. So, the drill is the pudding and the eating is the great ball flight and slight draw. Obviously I’m a bit bored with nothing else to do. Must have gotten lost in translation coming across the Atlantic. You’re by miles the best coach on KZfaq. Can’t tell you how much you’ve improved my game. I actually tell my own coach some of the stuff you put out. He thinks I’m like Bryson, coming up with all these ideas. He’s no idea I’m stealing them from you. Keep em coming. 👍

Don Law was at Boca Raton when I lived there. Spent many days on his range. Great drill - will immediately implement, but, this sort of flies in the face of Mike Malaska's (and several others) theory of the "L" to "L" pattern which as you know, follows a more steep back-and-thru plane.

Eric - thanks for all the great videos each week; Always enjoyable and informative. I'm struggling a bit with these concepts and hope you can answer the following questions. By swinging around the body as demonstrated in this video, wouldn't that promote an inside takeaway? Additionally, wouldn't it make the backswing plane (or shaft itself) too flat on the way back? I ask because these concepts almost seem in contradiction of each other. Is it a matter of: All of them are correct and you have to blend together the feels or are they completely separate concepts that should not overlap? Is it single plane golf swing vs. dual plane golf swing? Appreciate any feedback/insight you can share here and keep up the awesome work! Thank you! 👍
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Hey James! Nope---the arms and hands go it....doesnt mean you need to have excessive forearm rotation to make shaft flat. Hands/arms around.....club on plane. The basic concept is this: Those 20 golfers that say all lifted their hands/arms too much. They all needed more in. You can get arms and hands IN without shaft too far in/under plane
@gibsonbsd

Most golfers do not swing inside enough. As your swing movement points out, doing so also frees up the lower hips which generates a good coil. It's also a much more athletic movement which will add more distance.

Something that I like better than swinging around the body is playing golf underneath you. The mistake people make when they think around the body is they take the club inside and low which gets it stuck behind in transition. If you play underneath then you can have a direct path down to the ball and control the club face via the body’s rotation.

I enjoy your videos very much, you provide the 'nuggets' in very digestible way. Question, what modification do you make if your backswing fault is to bring the club too far to the inside already? is there a sequence or feel, clock position to employ in your drill?
@stephenbraswell119
@stephenbraswell119 2 жыл бұрын
He said that it’s not necessarily a problem to take it away to the inside early if you can deliver the club from the inside on the way down. I used to take the club to inside a long time ago and found out that it was caused by a few things 1/ I had no wrist hinge whatsoever until late in the backswing. 2/ I didn’t have enough width in my swing period so I was folding my right elbow a little too early instead of creating width. That was my personal issues.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Certainly....but I would need to see your swing to see WHY it's happening. Assuming you mean the CLUBHEAD itself is under plane Could be too much body rotation too early, too much lead shoulder internal rotation, trail arm too bent, too much forearm rotation, not enough hinge, etc Details matter----dont want to guess kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6hdZrKmrLrHo4E.html

How does this match with getting the shaft steeper on the backswing? Is it a matter of keeping the hand path more “in?”
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! The shaft angle will have more to do with the shoulder (internal/external) and arm rotation( pronation/supination) This is more about the HANDS/ARMS getting deep/around enough....not so much about the shaft angle

Correction: Eric, those with limited rotation the 'up-right' swing is the best way to make square contact. I started using up-right swing and lowered my hcp by 6 strokes. Once you hit the ball it doesn't matter where your club goes. There are YT videos of pro-teachers utilizing upright-swings. Arnold Palmer does NOT have an around swing plane, he slaps the ball. His back swing is up-right!

I guess what I’m trying to say is I’ve been taught to keep the club face square to the ball going back ( ie closed ) which encourages an upright, club in front of you swing. But your drill suggests opening the face with forearm rotation for a more rounded swing. I’m I correct or off base. Obviously I’m struggling with my swing and dispute being a 7 handicap my wife beats me like a drum and I’m tried of it!!!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! Yeah I would say that is off base a bit. I am not suggesting lots of forearm rotation nor certainly not opening the face a lot. I am suggesting the HANDs have to work AROUND you (in) in backswing a bunch and the arms need to as well. The arms and hands need to go IN and UP. Most player (as per my story in video) go UP plenty but not enough in (that I see) So they need more IN to get the neutral. That has nothing to do with forearm rotation or opening the face

I went through this too and it’s simple why people do it. Swinging around your body feels like your swinging way left and since most golfers slice the ball they don’t want to do that. And if you’re trying to draw the ball as a correction to slicing it you’re told get the path going right so you never end up finishing the swing. It’s a lot of bad teaching done with golf but fortunately EC out here fixing it one video at a time

I understand the concept but my problem is swinging too much around and my swing gets very flat. The result is I can't catch up on down swing and I end up flipping the club at the ball with my hands behind the ball at contact--really bad contact. I need to find the happy medium.

Hey Bill! Agreed---sounds like you need some more of the LIFT piece. Use video to find your FEELS to hit the checkpoints

For me and I assume for many, focusing more on where your hands are more than the club would be good in practice. Thanks

Eric, I can’t help but think too much focus on swinging the arms around the body could lead to the club head also getting behind the hands, something you’ve preached against in the past. How do you work on this move while keeping the club head in front of you? Is that just a matter of wrist conditions and/or not setting the wrists too early?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom! Keep in mind you want the club head to be behind your hands in the downswing to deliver to the ball.......thats the main end goal. If your clubhead gets inside hands on way BACK.....BUT....stay inside on way down you are OK Also---the point here is to get the ARMS and HANDS around Both important Best

If I’m playing a draw, I will feel like I’m swinging more around, and flatter. For a fade…. Just the opposite. Taller, steeper swing. Works for me.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
All good if that works for you Jamie! Lots of golfers have their "normal" too far on the taller, steeper and get too much fade! So they need to feel more around just to get to neutral

So a couple years ago as you mention, you were taught to swing around instead of up and down which made a significant difference in your swing and possible many others who view your videos and are loyal viewers. As you stated, you have witnessed numerous people wasting away at the range and are susceptible to fail without a repeatable swing. In the mean time you have made numerous videos demonstrating how to swing down the line. Typically, if you see someone at the range hitting without a purpose it is usually from bad instruction and believe me we all are trying to improve our swing. Everyone has their our own faults and limitations and should not expect a tour pro outcome as it relates to our swing. My only desire is to play with some repeatability. If you teach this, you have students for life.
