During this round, JMac joins me for 9 holes on our first day at Els Club, neither of us had played the course before. What's the difference between a 90 breaker and an 80 breaker and how can you go from a Break 90 to a Break 80 golfer?

What's the difference between a mid/high handicapper and a low handicapper?
I think the differences are mainly around the green. JMac can hit a good ball.
He could probably improve that driver to become more reliable and thereby hit lower irons into the greens. His putting has improved by he still has the occasional three-putt which hurts him badly.
Getting up and down from areas that are easier for you makes the golf game a lot easier. I mean, short siding yourself behind a bunker onto a tight pin is not going to yield good results.
You always want to play for your shot shape so that a straight shot leaves you a decent up and down chance. Three-stabs and easier chips would be helpful.
Of course, hitting approaches closer would be the most ideal which would entail having more accurate mid irons and also getting within short iron range. But how do we do that without some pro help or a LOT of practice? I say start at the green, learn that short game like a baus and you'll get s close to 80, it will make your head spin.
To shave off the final strokes, some lessons to hit a longer club will make all the diffrence. JMac is a great playa and I see him breaking 80 in the future. LIKE A BAUS.

I was a seldom golfer before retiring at 53 when I decided to take it seriously. At the time I was shooting in the 90s. Best lesson I learned from my course pro was to watch myself and other high handicappers and notice how often they are short of the pin. With other course management tools I was regularly in the mid 80s and within three years was in the high 70s.......

@@GolfSidekick If JMac shortens his swing (stops wrapping the shaft behind his neck like John Daly) he'd be way more accurate because he'd square the club face up more frequently. My 2-cents. I enjoy watching these videos, learning course management is a great way to simply enjoy the game more.

Getting fitted for my driver and then putting my ego aside and just hitting smart shots instead of trying to make hero shots, shaved my strokes from 104 to 89. I still struggle with approach shots and distance but you can save a lot of strokes just by not trying to do too much.

Liked the video. Entertaining and informative. Especially like the shot-tracker. I am an old, decrepit, broken down golfer of 72 years. I can remember the days when I "broke the numbers": 100, 90, 80, par, sub-par. And I've learned a little bit during this trip through the numbers. I've learned that the wonderful thing about breaking those higher numbers is that you can improve quickly and dramatically. And you can do this with no lessons; it doesn't require a good grip or any technical thoughts or lessons. Simply spend most of your warm-up and practice time on or around the practice putting green.

Matthew Kelly Hey Matt, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. I love that they are “golf instruction” in the sense of mechanics, but the mental approach to the game. This is so important because it’s nearly impossible to execute a good golf shot (much less several in a row) when you’re feeling frustrated, angry, or unconfident. It’s been great watching your journey as well as those of others on the channel that are not pros or scratch golfers, but just regular people that want to enjoy the game and find ways to improve. This year I finally broke 90 and more importantly, I’m enjoying the game more, even when I’m not having a good round. Your videos were a huge part of that! I’m still learning to put my ego aside, but you’ve helped me realize that being able to get out and play is a blessing, and there’s no point in investing the time if it’s not going to be enjoyable. Thanks for the videos and I hope you keep making lots of them!

Well done! It's good to see how much better JMac has gotten. He's going to beat you one day, ha ha. I play with two different groups and the one with better players definitely shows you where the path of improvement lies. Short game and consistency. Here's a few reasons I really like this channel: 1. High production values. Holding the camera steady isn't that hard, is it? Apparently it is for many other channels. 2. It doesn't take itself too seriously. Golf is supposed to be fun. Death match golf just isn't fun for me. 3. Real humans, playing real golf, warts and all. 4. Less swing technical analysis, more mental. Keep up the good work.

Watching your vids the last couple weeks inspired me to apply your strategies. I will say, they do work. I went from shooting mid to high 90's to shaving off nearly 10 strokes per round. My last two rounds were 89 and 86 respectively! With a little more consistency with my driver plus getting closer to the pin on my green shots, I feel 70s are within reach.

I have come to realize how different people (golfers) are. If I don't break 90, it is always, without question, an issue in ball striking. As soon as I am within 120 of the green, all issues go away. I have never finished a round thinking "if I only had putted better today" or "if I only had come out of that bunker in 1", no , it's always just "damn why didn't I find the ball in that rough" and essentially lost balls. I can leave my driver at home, it doesn't matter, I can snap hook a 6 iron off the tee into the OB with similiar frequency. I have really smooth feel for the ball and club as long as I swing below 45mph, after that all bets are off, I will hook it 280 into the next village on bad days. But my best buddie plays like a robot until he is 120 of the green and then, depending on the day, anything can happen. People and their struggles are really different I think. Looking at my stats from the last 10 rounds, it's pretty clear that my whole handicap is just an artifact of lost balls. If I recalculate my scores with "free mulligans of the tee", my hcp would be closer to 0 than to 14. I need no help in my short game. I have just no idea how to stop losing 6-8 balls per round. And this goes to show the difference, give another 14 hcp free mulligans and they will probably not turn into scratch golfers, they would benefit more from some relief around the green.

I think a large part of improving your scores is being able to play to your strengths on the course and defending against weaknesses. If you have great touch, play closer to the green. If you don't, manage the course and keep full-shots in your hand. Continue to practice on your weaknesses until you have enough confidence to bring them onto the course. Another thing I've noticed that has helped me bring my handicap from an 16 to a 5 over the past 3 seasons is not chasing a score. I can start a round with back-to-back double bogeys and not be rattled because I know that I can make those strokes back over the course of the round. I feel like too many golfers get in their heads after a mistake or bad bounce and begin to play outside of themselves.

Statistically you're better off hitting a longer club as close to the green as possible vice laying up to a full swing club distance. See James Sieckmann video. Pros love half wedges. In addition to eliminating 3-putts, also avoid 2-chips (chunks and skulls). These add many strokes a round. So learn to chip it close. Last advice: on approach shots, hit one longer club than your distance and swing easy. You'll hit more greens, make more pars and birds. Cheers!

Short game and course management. A player that can break 90 but not 80 generally keeps the ball in play most of time but when they miss the green in regulation they struggle to get up and down. A player that consistently breaks 80 but not quite scratch will miss their share of greens but often they are able to chip on and one putt to save more pars. They are also good at managing their misses to avoid big numbers on the scorecard.

Course management is the biggest way to lower scores. I can hit 300yd drives, 180yd 7 irons, and im decent at putting, but a lot of times i try to get cute with some shots so im always in the 80s. No doubt in my mind if I worked on course management (with the help of properly fitted clubs at some point) I could be a consistent 70s player.

This is a very nice video. Well done, well commented, good sound, nice music (and good mix). And: as always, the secret lies in the short game. It is practically all I practice, actually. The course you played on looked really nice, by the way, and quite challenging bunker landscapes..

Good to see you both using centre shaft putters Matt. JMac's putting stroke needs some work but his game has come on miles. Great video as usual!

JMac was playing on greens here a clear 2 feet faster than any green he is used to in Malaysia, where most courses run below 9 on the stimp. usually 8 to 8.5 That's one hell of an adjustment for most mid to high handicappers

JMAC's ham fisted putting grip is his putting problem. No flow in that stroke. 100% agree on course management being the best way to improve strokes on your game. great video. Looks like you guys have great fun! JMAC could easily shoot 80. He plays pretty smart overall.

Wow, one of the best "instruction-video" I have seen for a long time. Yes, I fully agree with your tips: Commitment and reduce putting to two strokes. It helped me going from high 90-ies to high 80-ies. Keep it up.
