Hi Bruce Welcome to Crystal Lake area! I've followed Graham Potter for years. Your styles are very simular. It would be nice to meet. I'm Jim from Benzonia. Great work with Goliath! Love the "feeling of the wood", while working the tool comment.

Hello! Beautiful bonsai! I ‘ve always loved bonsai but have never attempted one! we gave my mother-in-law a yew many, many years ago which she planted in her garden. We have since inherited the cottage and the yew! I was thinking of removing it as I want to make that part of the garden into a veg garden. However it breaks my heart to get rid of it....so I was thinking of turning it into a bonsai......and then I found you and Goliath!! I live in Canada (Quebec) where our winters are very cold with a heck of a lot of snow....so I was wondering what can I do? Once I remove it....where do I put it and do I cut the roots to fit it into a low, small pot? You’re advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Jeannine, I recommend you seek out your local bonsai club for advice. I know bonsai is practiced in Quebec. In fact, I was there many years ago visiting David Easterbrook to meet Mr. Hu from China. www.bonsaiquebec.com/english/index.htm

Be honest, while carving this did you ever say "oops"? Amazing tree, you're a wealth of knowledge
@BruceBakerBonsai3 жыл бұрын
I never say oops because I don’t want anyone to know I made a mistake.

I hate to be critical of the outcome of years of dedication and vision. I personally think the pot isn't quite right for the scale and style of the tree. I'm sure finding a pot in the more appropriate dimensions is nearly impossible and having one custom made might even be cost prohibitive. It also appears to me through what I'm able to see that the canopy isn't quite where it needs to be either but I understand the reason that being to gain strength before messing with it again. Very ambitious and fun tree. Great video and explanation!

I don’t really disagree with most of your points. Goliath will be restyled, refined and unrecognizable sometime next year.

Very interesting. Beautiful bonsai. Loved the video although could do without the distracting cheesy background music over the talking ;)

Usually over 3 feet not considering a bonsai I think. But it’s nice small tree.
@BruceBakerBonsai3 жыл бұрын
Bonsai is a combination of two words meaning “potted tree.” Bonsai are sometimes classified by height. For example, a shohin is a very small bonsai. No one has ever shown me any evidence that there are height restrictions and I have seen many bonsai taller than three feet in Japan and Europe. Very large potted trees are also common in China and Taiwan. Enjoy trees of any size you can manage!

Maybe check out Ryan Neil @ Mirai. He talks a lot about bonsai from an American prospective. That since we use different material, and have a different cultural context, we shouldn't try to stay in the box that is Japanese traditional bonsai.
