The Assembly Cut of Alien 3 included a once-lost subplot involving the prisoner Golic's obsession with the alien. Was Golic crazy, or were there reasons behind his behavior?

Golic worshiped and compared himself to it. "It feeds on minds!" Quite figuratively the Xeno punches holes in skulls with its retractable jaws, but it 'feeds on minds' in the sense of instilling absolute fear and terror into prey. This is how it finds you. Players of Isolation will have experienced it hiding in lockers holding down R2!

Nice. I just bought this version about a month ago. Really changed my outlook on the movie for the better. I think Golic, due to his mental illness, was hearing voices he associated with the Xenomorph. His desire to be free from his restraints paralleled the Xenomorph's desire to escape the inescapable room. That identification with plus the fascination with the Xenomorph drew him back to it. Whatever was in his head told him it would be a good idea to release it. The Dragon is another name for the Devil in Christian mythology. Maybe he was being led by demons, his own demons, or actual voices of malignant discarnate spirits that only he was sensitive to because of his ungrounded mental state. This is the first and only Alien movie where the struggle was physical as well as spiritual. The prisoners created a brotherhood that was tested by The Dragon, or The Devil. Golic was an outcast among them, and so he joined the side of evil when he sided with The Dragon, and "got what he deserved" as was mentioned.

Golic’s obsession with the alien is a comment on Weyland-Yutani’s obsession with it (reckless life-threatening insanity). Completely went over the test audience’s head - cutting so much of Paul McGann from Alien 3 is perhaps the greatest crime in the Alien canon.

As in the original books by Steve Perry, some people are susceptible to the telepathic frequencies the aliens communicate over... resulting in vivid nightmares. I think Golic had these dreams, but instead of being terrified by them, his twisted mind felt kinship with the creature, thus informing his actions in releasing it.

This is basically what I thought. In the Earth War comics, a televangelist starts having dreams of the Xenomorph and starts a religion around it which eventually leads to them breaking out on earth. I'd assume something similar happened to Golic, he was affected by the Alien's presence and turned into an admirer of the creature.

This movie, with it's legendary trials and tribulations, demonstrates what a powerhouse Director Fincher really is. In any other hands it would've been nothing. That said, I often wonder what film we would've actually got, had Fincher been given omplete authorship? I believe it would be his finest work and nothing short of a masterpiece.

He's referring more to the fact that the movie was ruined due to corporate greed. Fox wanted another blockbuster success like Aliens, and they were constantly interfering with the film's production up to the point where new drafts of the script were being written for scenes ON the day of filming said scenes. So yes, the greediness inherent to capitalism did kill the movie and nearly killed the franchise.

If they had’t done Newt and Hicks in how they did, it would likely have endured better and perhaps be included as one of the good ones. But that aspect really pissed a lot of people off, right at the start. It was a hard sell after that, and especially in it’s release version never came close to overcoming it. The later version does redeem it a lot, but honestly not enough. So when there is talk of where to branch to ‘fix’ things, that starting point of killing off two loved characters offscreen, for no reason other than to make the story focus only on Ripley, is where most land on that. Myself included. I can watch and enjoy any of the movies, and 3 is not bad in and of itself. But it is bad as a continuation of Aliens, just because of that one choice.

I think that when Golic said, "It feeds on minds", he was being quite literal. He watched the Alien use it's inner jaw on Boggs, punching through his head as the Xenomorph has always done. Golic only believed the alien was bonding with him because the alien so freely and easily kills it's prey, yet didn't attack him, giving him a jilted sense of security about the Xeno, wherein the Xeno was likely saving him for later, knowing Golic was no immediate threat, instead going after the prey that was stronger than Golic. Anything Golic "heard" from the Xeno, was all n his head. That's just my opinion. Love your videos, Theory. I only hope Disney allows the opportunity for u to continue making these videos, with new films from the franchise I love more than any other. I will kick Mickey n his mouse nuggets if he buries the Alien franchise n that vault. Anyway, great video. Hope u have a great weekend to match it.👍💯

So in the comic and novel, Golic pleads with the xenomorph to let him go so he can be its friend and help it kill others, and it yeets the hell out of there without killing him. Golic essentially freaked the fuck out of a killing machine and left it too disturbed to hurt him. One could essentially argue Golic was killed in the assembly cut out of self defense.

Golic´s obsession with the Xenomorph is non other than his encounter with his own human murderous nature. I´ve always seen the Alien creature in general as a metaphor of what would all us human beings be like, if we weren´t domesticated by an imposed morality, by a penal system and by society in general. Golic basically sees the Alien as his doppelganger, and the "Alien" portrays the worst part of human beings, or better said, he portrays our real form.

I think that the xenomorph sensed that the character was always a greater threat or atleast a liability to his comrads much more than he was to the xenomorph. To a warrior, if it is not a threat, its a tool. Another piece to the puzzle that spells victory. To the xenomorph, survival is about choosing the victory that consumes the least amount of energy and time; in turn, that also increases the likely hood of survival. So it is perfectly possible that the xenomorph would rather let loose the ticking time bomb on on its enemies in order to raise some hell than expend resourses on killing him

Once I saw the assembly cut, I gained a whole new appreciation for alien3. A big part of that was the reinsertion of golic's subplot. As a big fan of the comics, I have always found the whole idea that there would be people worshipping the damnable things fascinating. Two of the characters in the movies sort of touch on that, and from different angles. Thr way i always viewed him, Golic is the most obvious as far as a pseudo- religious fascination goes, seeming to view it as some sort of deity, the ultimate manifestation of whatever demons drove him to kill to begin with. Your video furthers that. As far as the idea of the xenos controlling him, perhaps so, maybe it was able to use its posited psychic abilities on his poor, damaged brain, where it couldn't on others, because their brains were much closer to normal. Geddiman, in resurrection, also seems to have a sort of spiritual fascination with them, though his is tempered in its whacked-out insanity by his intelligence and scientific knowledge of ye olde strange form. In the expanded stuff, I think my favorite psycho-cultist character was Dr. Cotlow in tribes. He was just... Eery, through and through.

Golic and the Alien were in a me tal thg of war, like in the comics , the jockey and newt have a small mental clash. Golic's insanity v.s the aliens instinct was a well fought match. Golic drove the alien to hunt irratically, to leave him and Ripley alone, or perhaps for last, but could not suppress its nature: to hunt. When golic was finally in front of the alien, one on one. No other distractions, the fina mental clash took place. They had commanded each other in tugs at their mental ropes, but now their natures must fight. The aliens want to hunt, and golics to survive. In the end, felix seemed more eager to serve than survive, and the dragon slew him. He made a deal with the devil so to speak, and the devil collected sooner than he thought. Or that's my theory.

Thanks for making this. I know I asked about it a year ago and I think you nailed it on the head. One part I found interesting is when you mentioned the part about the the great red dragon. This got me thinking about the killer from Red Dragon, Francis Dolarhyde who was obsessed with the great red dragon and the woman clothed in the sun. He also has dissociative identity disorder. One of the original scripts to the film also had a plot where Dillon and Morse would find Golic cocoon in a hive and Dillon would set fire to the hive with the use of a flare.

I really hate that they cut that reel. The whole movie makes more sense for the climax. They know the Bait and Chase will work. Gives confidence to their plan when discussing whether to fight it or not.

One thing worth noting is that after he kills the other prisoner guarding the alien in the waste tank, he becomes emotional, saying sorry over and over. So he understands that what he is doing is wrong and he feels remorse; it's just unclear if he's being compelled (or thinks he's being compelled) to do this by the alien against his will, or if he is following his own plan and merely regrets that killing a fellow prisoner is necessary to fulfil that plan.

Not only is Golic’s actor played by Doctor Who himself, but Superintendent Andrews also appeared in _Doctor Who_ - as a bumbling and loveable bank robber in the 1986 serial _Attack of the Cybermen_ And, of course, Kane’s actor John Hurt played the Doctor from 2013 to 2017 (though only in audio dramas after 2013).

I loved 3 so much and it makes me so sad that fox didn’t stop pushing David, eventually leaving us with his disowning of the film. He really had a hard time and if the execs just let him direct with no time or budget limits, it would have been an even more amazing film. All things considered it’s a miracle of a film and I support the visions intended, be those that made it onscreen or otherwise. Great video, as always.

The part about him asking alien what to do next really reminds me of the cultists in earth war. I wonder if the comic book creators drew inspiration for that angle from the original script for alien three.

It's better than Aliens in my opinion. If you like macho wise cracking grunts then that's fine. I feel that Aliens destroys the mysticism of the xenomorph creature. Alien³ restores what Aliens destroyed. The movie begins with such a dark tone. Bishop is demolished, Hicks gets impaled upon touchdown and newt drowns in cryosleep. It keeps on the tone from the start as a tragic and gory psychological thriller. I think it's a masterpiece. Why is it that you think it fails?

The Polish word for 'shave' is 'golic'. Golic has several close shaves with the alien. His frequently bloodied face looks like he's literally given his face too close a shave. And, of course, like everyone else, his head is shaven. It's strange that they didn't film him being attacked by the alien and that the alien, quickly scurrying away, showed no sign of having attacked him.

Fascinating! (especially the biblical ties toward the end) Another fun fact regarding the Dracula comparison (6:00-7:00) - the meaning of that surname is basically 'son of the order of the dragon'...which further strengthens the connection considering Golic's 'dragon' term for the alien.

I think Golic's comment of "It feeds on minds" was due in part to witnessing the Xenomorph's killing of the other inmates when first encountering it and not just the insanity talking. That aside, was very interesting how you included some history of psychology in this one. Wouldn't happen to be studying it would you?

Being in prison for mass murder....Weyland-Yutani found out his real identity, the Time Lord known as THE DOCTOR...they took his sonic screwdriver, his TARDIS key, threw him into prison, because he has blown up Skaro (before the Time War)... and then he was killed off by the Xenomorph.
