Goniopora (flowerpot corals) impossible? | Care recipes

In this episode, I’ll talk about the amazing flowerpot corals and how to keep them in a captive environment. Everyone knows that Goniopora are impossible to keep. They always die after a year or so. That’s the word on the street - but it’s not the whole truth. Personally, I took this statement as a challenge, and set out to change the way we looked at the care of this “impossible” coral. Until recently, I dare not say I have cracked the code on many Goniopora species. I have kept both Alveopora and Goniopora, and most of them have seen substantial growth in the past 18 months. I can now tell that it is possible to keep Goniopora alive, as long as you provide the proper care and feeding for the species in question.

Roger, thanks for another beautiful video. As an amateur reefer, I made the mistake of purchasing a beautiful goniopora frag 2 days ago - and placed it in front of another new favites frag. I knew once I had place the order late night during a flash sale that I would be in trouble. But anyway, the goniopora started melting / giving off translucent stuff directly onto the beautiful new Favites frag, and totally destroyed it within a few hours. Lesson learned.

I agree whole heartily about your advice on goniopora! In my experience the shorter tentacles are more sensitive. I believe one of the differences in success is the type and how heavy you feed. A lot of reefers keep feeding to a minimum as they believe its key to low nutrients. In my opinion it is a confusion of terminology. I think nutrients are food and not nitrates/phosphates which can be byproducts of broken down nutrients. If you have a system that can keep nitrates/phosphates in a good range yet feed a high volume of a varied diet helps the reef tremendously. Such as your stunning reef! Thanks for sharing great video! 👍
@zzyz
@zzyz 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I can't agree more. The longer the tentacles the hardier the species. And it not only applies to gonis but also holds true for other stony corals. Most SPS don't feel happy when nitrates go beyond 10. So, yes, corals need food, not nutrients.

I recently began dosing live phyto to my tank. I got a huge bacterial bloom and I believe it was caused by the excess nutrients in the water. I then began concentrating the phyto. I have a 3 litre bottle in the fridge, I let it decant for a day, remove the top half water and replenish it with more phyto and so on, as I produce more phyto. This way I dose a smaller volume of water with less nutrients and more plancton. From time to time, I will also repeat the process adding just fresh saltwater to the 3 litre bottle. Do you spot feed phyto?
@zzyz
@zzyz 3 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I used to culture live phyto with added nutrients. The more nutrients added, the better growth and the better quality of reseeding. But that brought the problem when it came to feeding. I then turned to purified live phyto (without nutrients) which was 10 times as expensive. I think your approach to concentrating the phyto is a great way to save costs.
@LightSearch
@LightSearch 3 жыл бұрын
@@zzyz I only began doing this recently so I don't know how far can I keep concentrating phyto without killing it. But I think that by now it's 4 or 5 times more concentrated than what I used to have. I now pour 20% of liquid into the tank with the same amount of phyto. And as I said I can improve this method even more by decanting, removing the top half of the water and adding fresh salt water. The idea of decanting the phyto and keep concentrating it didn't arise from the nutrient problem but because I already had to much space in the fridge occupied by phyto :) . The nutrient reduction was a very welcome side effect.
@zzyz
@zzyz 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's very concentrated. I noted that the first batch of phyto was pretty healthy without much sediments on the bottom. But then they started to lose vitality after 4-5 batches. Have you noticed this? Maybe I contaminated the seed, making it less pure.
@LightSearch
@LightSearch 3 жыл бұрын
@@zzyz I almost lost the culture in the beginning, it would start to lose the deep green and gain a more dry green look. I managed to bring it back by adding more fertilizer. Right before deciding to concentrate the phyto I noticed that the phyto in the bottles in the fridge was settling down at the bottom faster than before, so I noticed the same reduction in vitality you did. But not in the ongoing culture and I have not been careful about preventing contamination. Right now the culture is the darkest green I have ever had it. It sits at around 15-18 degrees C and only gets light from a window. I split it every 9 or 10 days.

@@Simsung Sounds OK. PO4 is a bit high, but Gonis are not sensitive to nutrients. They live well in both low and high nutrient environments. If you are dosing a carbon source, try stopping it for a day or two. See if things improve. Mg is also a bit high compared with Ca, but I doubt that would be a problem. May I know what size is the phyto you feed the tank? Try a broad range of size, such as 1-30um, to cover even the most demanding species. That's what I can think of for the moment.
@zzyz
@zzyz 3 жыл бұрын
@@Simsung My pleasure. 1-20um sounds great already. Cheato will help reduce phosphates for sure. But keep an eye on them. They'll release nutrients back to the system upon death. If other corals are all good, it means water parameters are in check. I guess it's either afraid of sth nibbling at it or starving. Try to move it to another place and spot feed phytos. See if it would improve.

@@liftuppliv4707 I don’t do spot feeding. I broadcast feed twice a day 4ml each for the 70g. If you spot feed Gonis, you may reduce that amount by half.

@@zzyz I had a pink Goni that got covered in flat worms. We were advised to do a fresh water dip, which removed, permanently all of the flatworms. But shortly there after the Goni and its green and red mates treated similarly never came back the same. They all receded slowly on their skeletons. Their polyp extension has not been full, and the pink Goni lost it colour, its now white. Reef roids and gonipower along with amino acids dosing over the past few weeks have returned some poly extension ( very minimal )......I’ve had these goni about 1 year before my tragedy struck.........

@zzyz 3 жыл бұрын
@@liftuppliv4707 I have also seen pink goni of some species receding in color. Maybe it's species dependent. Healthy corals should be able to stand the fresh water dip. Perhaps it was already sick for a while. Keep the water params stable and target feed it. Hope it will get well soon.

请问我的Goni才买回来一个星期然后就不会开了。请问你有什么方法吗?
@zzyz
@zzyz 3 жыл бұрын
一般一周不开应该是水质问题,如果是几个月后不开可能就是喂食问题。当然也有可能有其他生物骚扰,可以放隔离盒看看是否有改善,然后确保水质各参数在正常范围。
