Started a 70 gal. REEF this past Dec. I too want a good blend of Janitors

I picked up a Halloween Orange Urchin, Lawnmower Blenny, a Cleaner Shrimp, and some sand snails to add to my tank. I am worried though that I might not have enough algae for them

@@ralphjustineestil4124 As a rule of thumb, the larger the tank, the less maintenance effort is needed. I once had a quarantining tank which was 10 gallon large. I had to wash filter floss everyday to maintain the water level or the water top-up would not function. Meanwhile in addition to chemicals, I had to replenish salt everyday to keep salinity stable. Let alone trace elements, which were indeed very difficult to control for a 10 gallon. My observation is, budget tank comes with costly maintenance. There's no free lunch.

Sorry to hear that you lost 1 SPS, but there's no guarantee. Sometimes it's not your fault. They just can't adapt to the captive environment, especially those in light colors. My observation is that SPS with relatively big polyps tend to survive and thrive better. Thank you and wish you good luck!

Thank you Ari. I do use activated carbon to absorb chemicals that corals emit. But I won't attribute the water clarity to activated carbon. I think clean-up crew decomposing detritus into smaller particles that are brought into the overflow and captured by filter floss is the major reason. I haven't changed water in the past 6 months as I see no difference of coral response in water changing. Having said that, I do dose regularly to replenish sea salt and a variety of chemicals to the water column that are essential to coral growth.

Thank you Michael! GHA is nightmare. Tuxedo urchin will eat some, but if you have a lot, it takes tremendous time to eliminate them. Cheato reactor is a must and a great deal of patience is also needed. If you stop NOPOX dosing, dinos will be gone automatically. UV is not needed.

Try to put their feet in rock crevices without flow directly hitting them and surround the caves with branching live rocks that they can lean on when opening up. They will not move around in places they feel comfy. Give it a try and let us know how it goes. Wish you good luck!

Thank you! Mine is a Red Sea 250 70g tank. I use the default filtration that comes with the tank. There is a sump underneath, where I have filter floss, protein skimmer and biopellets. I'm going to talk about filtration specifically in my future episodes. The algae reactor I've been using is from a small Chinese manufacturer, which is only selling domestically. I would recommend bigger brands such as Kraken if you're interested to add one.

Thank you. Although BTAs are sensitive to nitrates (especially above 20), they are otherwise pretty robust creatures that are easy to take care of. If you don't want them to grow too fast, just stop target feeding them. To place them where you want, simply remove them at night when they contract into a bud, put them in an intended rock crevice, they will fix in there and blossom the next day. To help them extend from the rock crevice, you can place some branch rocks around the crevice and I bet they'll make good use of them.

I use two Red Sea LED 90s, with blue peaking at 70% and white at 50%.

@@slottejea I cleaned everything in the reactor at the very early stages of the tank. I kept doing so until green algae appear. I just took a portion out then, leaving the rest in there to maintain a healthy pod population.

Thank you for mentioning nassarius snails. I don't personally have experience with these snails. Despite moving on sand, these are carnivores. They will probably not help with algae issues such as cyanos on sand.

It’s a common specimen but looked entirely different when I bought it from LFS. I would say a healthy green nem should have looked the way it was in the video.

Thank you! Chaeto may not be able to outcompete the other micro algae. Just let the other algae grow. The types of algae in the reactor will change from time to time due to shifts in nutrient balance. They will eventually stabilize in about 6 months time when you'll see greenish algae proliferate. If you have other algae you prefer to culture, you can put them in the breeder box instead of in the reactor. I have cultured in three boxes bunches of sea lettuce which I harvested for soup or salad.

@@meakin2424 I control nutrients simply by using the algae reactor. No NOPOX dosing. I maintain PH by keeping KH stable any time at 9.3. Of course you can adjust KH anywhere between 8-12 as most reefers agree, but I find KH below 10 achieves the best polyp extension, and above 9 for fast growing. You won't have any issue with PH should you keep KH stable in range.

Keep your nitrate low and they will stay bubbled up. If you want them to grow fast, feed them with shrimps. Wish you good luck!

Yes of course. But an algae reactor has a nice feature that the light is contained within so that other chambers of the refugium would not be contaminated by algae.

NoPox if overdosed will cause dino bloom and occasionally also cause yellow tang to develop red streaks over the body.

@@rrrreefer9721 Thank you for sharing your experience with the yellow tang exposed to nopox. Maybe it was just my tang failing to get accustomed to the chemical. But I did have multiple confirmations that the red streaks disappeared as soon as I stopped dosing nopox.

It took roughly 2 hours per day for the first 6 months as I was learning and experimenting. But now I just spend10-15 minutes per day for maintenance.

As there are four fish at the frame specified, I'm uncertain which one you are talking about, but they are green chromis, six line wrasse, damsel and anthias. I bought the garden eel from a local fish store. Yellow ones are less commonly seen than the spotted ones.

Hi Aydiner, it's a pity I cannot build a new tank due to space limitation at home, but I'll talk about system build and maintenance in my future updates. To answer your questions, a cycle is typically 6 months when microorganisms start to reach a relative balance. You can introduce clean up crew to the tank in the first week and start to add fish in about 3 months as some live rocks carry ich / velvet that infect fish if you put in too early. And it's better to add in LPS corals and nems after the cycle is done as they are more sensitive to water quality. Finally in with SPS coral if chemicals are kept extremely stable at very narrow ranges. I have another episode on species selection. @@aydinerusul1362 Aydiner, that sounds exciting! 10 blue leg hermits, 5 turbo snails (other snails are subject to crab predation), 1 black cucumber, 1 peppermint shrimp (to kill aiptasia), 2 marble shrimps, will probably do the job for you.

Thank you! Yes, I run 24/7 and let the algae of different species compete and balance by themselves. But if you prefer to culture certain macro algae of your preference, such as grape algae, then you have to stay alert and prevent them from going sexual.
