Caught this guy with Herbie, Dejonette and Metheny in Philly back in 88. Master Class......I became a bassist that night

What a great tribute to Mingus beautifully done. Love Dave Holland's style. My favorite is his work with Herbie, Metheny and DeJohnette "shadow dance" in 1990

@schimmelpenninq Lester Young. Definitely the man! His WW2 experiences left him wounded and damaged spiritually, and he basically drank himself to death at 50.

Nothing states the farewell to the great Lester Young better the bottom sound of the bass. Thanks to Mingus for tune and only Holland is capable of such an authentic interpretation. Dave is a bad dude.

I think Lester Young might be a bit pist if he was known as Pork Pie Head - sounds like the hamburglar's cousin...

OK, that does it. I'll sell my bass and buy a kazoo or something.

Ok, bass players...tell me why the bridge on uprights is never stained to match the rest of the wood of the bass...and left so pale and lifeless...And I ain't buying that a little stain is going to mess with the sound transmission.

From a bassplayer and bass luthier / some speculative answers. 1/ A well finished fine maple bridge looks lovely and doesn't need any colour. 2/ The light unstained bridge is a match for the unstained neck shaft maple. 3/ The bridge may need dimensional alteration occasionally after which it would be difficult to match the stain. 4/ Tradition
